CM requests Centre to allot funds for sports infra development in Telangana

The Hindu16 hours ago
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has requested the Central government to take steps to hold the Khelo India Games — 2026 edition in Telangana.
He wanted the Centre to explore options for holding national and international sports events other than Khelo India — 2026 in the State. The Chief Minister made the request when he called on Union Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Mansukh Mandaviya in New Delhi on Monday.
He urged the Union Minister to sanction adequate funds to Telangana for developing sports infrastructure, training of sportspersons and other works. The Centre should consider sanction of ₹100 crore for various sports infrastructure development works like synthetic athletic track, multi-purpose indoor stadium, archery range in Hakimpet on the city outskirts, squash court in LB stadium among others.
He explained to Mr. Mandaviya that his government was taking all necessary steps to improve and strengthen sports infrastructure and urged him to ensure that Telangana would host at least two events in the Olympics to be held in the country in 2036. Mr. Revanth Reddy wanted the Union government to restore concessional travel in trains to sportsmen participating in the national level sports events.

Bharat Bandh on July 9: Over 250 million workers to join nationwide strike

More than 250 million workers from diverse sectors—including banking, insurance, postal services, and coal mining—are expected to participate in a nationwide general strike on Wednesday. Organised by a forum of ten central trade unions, the strike or 'Bharat Bandh', seeks to protest what the unions describe as 'anti-worker, anti-farmer, and anti-national pro-corporate policies' of the Centre. Amarjeet Kaur of the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) told news agency PTI that farmers and rural workers will also join the protest across the country. The large-scale strike is likely to disrupt essential public services and major industries, including banking, coal mining, state-run transport, manufacturing units, and postal services. Why have trade unions called a general strike? The protest centres on a 17-point charter of demands that the unions had submitted to Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya last year. According to the unions, the government has disregarded these demands and has failed to convene the annual labour conference for the past 10 years, an omission they interpret as indifference towards the nation's labour force. The forum stated that the government 'continues to take decisions in contravention to the interest of labour force", citing efforts to enforce four new labour codes as an attempt to undermine collective bargaining rights, weaken union activity, and benefit employers under the guise of improving the 'ease of doing business'. The unions further alleged that prevailing economic policies are exacerbating unemployment, fuelling inflation in essential goods, depressing wages, and leading to cuts in public spending on education, healthcare, and basic civic amenities. Opposition to privatisation The trade union forum expressed its opposition to the privatisation of public sector enterprises and services, and the increasing use of contractual and casual labour. According to the unions, the four labour codes passed by Parliament are designed to suppress the trade union movement, extend working hours, and erode workers' rights to collective bargaining. Demands raised by forum The forum stated that they were asking the government to address unemployment, fill sanctioned vacancies through recruitment, create additional employment opportunities, increase both the number of workdays and the remuneration for Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act MGNREGA workers, and introduce similar legislation for urban areas. However, it added that the government was instead focused on imposing the Employment Linked Incentive (ELI) scheme to provide incentives to employers. Bank trade unions to participate on July 9 The Bengal Provincial Bank Employees Association, affiliated with the All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA), confirmed that banking sector unions — including AIBEA, All India Bank Employees Association (AIBOA), and Bank Employees Federation of India (BEFI) — will also take part in Wednesday's strike. According to the bank employees' union, the strike will serve as a protest against the central government's 'pro-corporate economic reforms'.

Punjab Cabinet withdraws consent for CISF deployment at dams given by Channi govt

The Punjab Cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Monday withdrew the consent for the deployment of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) at the dams in the state given by the Congress government in 2021 and decided to bring a resolution in the Assembly session beginning July 10 against the deployment of the central force at the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) dams. Addressing the media after the meeting, Finance Minister Harpal Cheema said, 'During its 111-day regime, former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi-led Congress government in Punjab had on October 21, 2021, given its consent to the Centre for the CISF deployments at dams in the state. The Cabinet today approved the withdrawal of that consent with immediate effect. During the upcoming Assembly session, we will bring a special resolution that CISF will not be allowed.' In May, the Centre had sanctioned a contingent of 296 armed CISF personnel to provide a counter-terrorist security cover to the Nangal dam in Punjab amid the standoff between Punjab and Haryana over the sharing of water from the dam. By mid-May, the Centre ordered the deployment of the CISF at the Bhakra Dam, citing concerns over the security of critical infrastructure. The Centre had clarified that the move was not politically motivated but a response to security lapses, especially after BBMB engineers and senior officers complained of being unable to perform their duties under coercion from the state. Later, at a NITI Aayog meeting in Delhi, Mann opposed the Centre's move to deploy CISF. However, CISF personnel have yet to be deployed. Cheema said the Punjab Police is a capable force and it will continue to provide security at the dams. 'Shahpur Kandi dam is 5 km from the International Border (IB). The Punjab Police is manning it. Bhakra Dam is far away from the border. The Punjab Police is strong and competent. They have protected the country. We will not allow CISF to take over the security of the dams.' Cheema said the Punjab government would neither pay for their (CISF) deployment nor allow them to take over the dams.
