Perth teen's crazy outfit results in Katy Perry stage time
An Armadale teen's bizarre decision to dress as an orange 'sandwich board' inspired by Katy Perry's 2022 Menu Log commercial has resulted in an unforgettable moment on stage with the pop star.
After turning 16 on Friday, Archie Richards used Perry's Sunday night RAC Arena show as the setting for his birthday party.
Summoned to the stage by the performer alongside several other fans in eye-catching outfits, the teen was encouraged to rap a few famous lines from the advert — and even took some snaps with the star he's admired for more than 10 years. 'You always manifest it, but you don't actually think it's going to happen to you,' he told PerthNow.
'It just didn't feel real.'
Asked how the Roar singer reacted to his obscure outfit choice, Mr Richards believes he caught her slightly off guard.
'I think she was a bit taken aback. It's not every day you see a teenage boy dressed up in a Menu Log sandwich board,' he joked.
Each moment of his performance was caught on camera by his 'ecstatic' friend, with the audience lapping up the youngster's energy.
However, his unforgettable experience almost didn't happen.
The teen said that his one-of-a-kind outfit was a last-minute DIY job, initially planning to attend as a 'firework' before a change of heart.
'I thought, 'What if I just paint (the cardboard) orange and stick some glitter in the shape of Menu Log on it?',' he recalled.
'I made it the day of the concert in about two hours, so I'm pretty proud of it.'
Perry played a mix of her classic hits, such as Dark Horse and Roar, as well as recent hits from her 2024 album titled 143.
The 40-year-old's famous husband, actor Orlando Bloom, and her daughter Daisy have accompanied the star in Perth.
With Mr Richards part of the next-generation of Perry fans, the teen showed his age when asked how he felt about the Pirates of the Caribbean star's presence in town.
'To be completely honest, I don't know who Orlando Bloom is,' he said.
The excited fan said he would be attending the singer's second show in Perth on Monday night, and vowed to 'outfit repeat' after success the first time.
'Same costume, but I'm sitting a lot closer so she'll definitely see me,' he said.

Tickets about to drop for blockbuster WWE event in Perth
Fans hoping to see wrestling star and Hollywood actor John Cena in the flesh can secure their spot at RAC Arena when pre-sale tickets go on sale on Monday. Cena will headline the return of WWE to Perth from October 10-13, with three shows scheduled — Friday Night Smackdown, Saturday's Crown Jewel and Monday night RAW. Pre-sale combo tickets for the shows go on sale 1pm June 30, while fans who pre-register will gain early access to tickets. General public combo tickets will be at 1pm Wednesday, July 2. 'This will be the last time fans can see the legendary John Cena live at a WWE event in Australia, with the weekend in Perth part of his global retirement tour,' Tourism Minister Reece Whitby said. 'For over two decades, John Cena has declared 'you can't see me', well Perth, now you can. 'This blockbuster weekend promises an action-packed line up that can't be seen anywhere else in Australia, New Zealand, or South East Asia this year, and tickets are sure to sell out fast.' The State Government won't say how much bringing the wrestling extravaganza to WA is costing taxpayers. But, according to the Government, last year's WWE Elimination Chamber at Optus Stadium attracted 18,000 fans from outside of WA and generated $36.2 million for the local economy. 'Major events are a key part of the Cook Government's tourism strategy, they fill our hotels, boost hospitality and tourism businesses, and encourage visitors to not only come to WA, but to stay longer, and explore further,' Mr Whitby said. This week, WWE superstars Bianca Belair and Montez Ford explored WA's tourism destinations, including Kings Park and Exmouth, exploring the wonders of WA's Coral Coast, promoting the state. WWE hasn't yet released details of how much it will cost wrestling fans to attend the Perth events, but at last year's Perth WWE event ringside tickets started at $400. 'Katy confided in friends at the start of the year that their relationship was as good as done,' the source said. 'They decided to hold off on announcing anything in case things improved between them, because they are desperate to stay together for the sake of their daughter. 'But they have spent barely any time together this year, with Katy on tour and Orlando working on his upcoming film Bucking Fastard in Dublin. 'She knew that taking off her engagement ring would send a clear message. 'It's been a hard year so far. They wanted to wait until the tour is over before they made their split official, although Katy has grown tired of the situation.' The couple have dated on and off for nine years after first sparking up a romance in 2016. They got engaged in 2019, and welcomed their daughter the following year.
