Russian scientists develop model to extend battery lifespan

Researchers at Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU), together with colleagues from Novosibirsk, have developed a digital model that allows real-time assessment and adjustment of battery operating conditions in electric buses.
According to TV BRICs , this innovation can significantly increase battery life by accurately accounting for thermal and electrical processes. This is reported by the official website of the Russian Ministry of Education.
The model was created as a result of comprehensive research, including field tests of transport, collection of operational data and mathematical modelling of battery degradation processes. Key parameters were taken into account: charge level, temperature fluctuations, number of passengers and speed of movement.
"Our model combines physical and chemical modelling, statistics and neural network approaches. It adapts to specific routes, taking into account climate and charging modes, which allows us to optimise battery performance in real time," explained project leader Nikita Martushev, associate professor at the TPU School of Information Technology and Robotics.
Field tests were conducted on urban and suburban routes, during which dozens of parameters were recorded, from charge level and temperature to engine torque. Based on the data obtained, the scientists built a mathematical model of the traction system that allows them to assess the impact of temperature and electrical modes on battery wear.
The results showed that a 15°C increase in temperature reduces battery life by 30 per cent, and operation at 43°C reduces it by almost half. Accelerated charging or discharging twice as fast as normal reduces the battery life by 30 per cent, and four times faster reduces it by 47 per cent.
The study also identified the optimal operating conditions: a charge level of 25% to 65% and a temperature range of 20–30°C. Additional charging stations along the route allow battery heating to be controlled and significantly slow down their wear and tear.

Southern Ocean Waters Are Getting Warmer and Saltier, Study Warns

Rana Atef Researchers have discovered another unexpected shift in the Southern Ocean. Surface water salinity is rising, and sea ice is in steep decline. The latest discovery came as Antarctica is deeply suffering from the consequences of climate change and global warming. Since 2015, Antarctica has lost sea ice equal to the size of Greenland. This proves that the Southern Ocean is also getting saltier, and this unexpected change is worsening the crisis. For decades, the ocean's surface was less salty, helping sea ice grow. Now, scientists say that situation has sharply reversed. Using European satellite data, research led by the University of Southampton has discovered a sudden rise in surface salinity south of 50° latitude. This is parallel with a dramatic loss of sea ice around Antarctica and the re-emergence of the Maud Rise polynya in the Weddell Sea. The findings have been published on 30 June in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Dr. Alessandro Silvano from the University of Southampton who led the research said, "Saltier surface water allows deep ocean heat to rise more easily, melting sea ice from below. It's a dangerous feedback loop: Less ice leads to more heat, which leads to even less ice. "The return of the Maud Rise polynya signals just how unusual the current conditions are. If this salty, low-ice state continues, it could permanently reshape the Southern Ocean—and with it, the planet. Egypt's NRRA Chief: We Monitor Radiation Levels Around the Clock, Possess Advanced Infrastructure to Ensure Top Safety Standards

Ahmed Emam Egypt's Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority (NRRA) is maintaining round-the-clock monitoring of radiation levels nationwide as well as in neighboring regions, according to Dr. Sami Shaaban, Chairman of the NRRA. His remarks come amid heightened regional tensions and reflect Egypt's commitment to nuclear safety and environmental protection. Dr. Shaaban explained that the NRRA is responsible for regulating all nuclear and radiological activities across Egypt to ensure public safety. The Authority continuously tracks background radiation levels through a network of monitoring stations distributed throughout the country. It also issues regulatory guidelines for licensed activities, reviews technical documentation, inspects sites, and conducts both scheduled and surprise inspections to enforce compliance with safety standards. Amid recent regional developments, the NRRA has intensified its monitoring activities, extending surveillance beyond Egypt's borders to track radiation levels in countries such as Syria, Gulf states, and European Union nations. The Authority submits regular reports on these efforts to the Egyptian Cabinet. Egypt's nuclear regulatory system relies on a robust infrastructure and organizational structure, comprising three main regulatory sectors: the Nuclear Facilities Safety Sector, the Radiological Facilities and Sources Safety Sector, and the Nuclear Security Safeguards Sector. Supporting departments include quality management, legal affairs, a Center of Excellence, cooperation and public relations, technical support and laboratories, and a Situation Assessment Center. The NRRA operates advanced laboratories equipped with cutting-edge technology for analysis and measurements, enabling precise regulatory decisions. It also provides technical and scientific support to other regulatory bodies at the national level. Dr. Shaaban highlighted that the Authority benefits from full support from the Egyptian state, reflected in technical collaborations with international partners, including Russia and European Union countries. He added that the NRRA has implemented an integrated electronic performance management system based on good governance principles, ensuring institutional efficiency and transparency. He also underscored the crucial role of the NRRA's Center of Excellence in developing and enhancing the skills of technical personnel.
