Over 750 Apple and Pear trees felled in Kotkhai as eviction drive gains momentum
States » North Shimla, July 12 (UNI) In a major operation carried out under tight security, the Special Operation Procedure (SOP) team today cut down over 750 apple and pear trees in the Kotkhai region of Shimla district as part of the ongoing court-monitored drive to clear illegal encroachments from forest land. The operation began with the felling of 93 apple trees illegally planted by Dinesh Tajta, followed by the removal of 664 apple and pear trees belonging to Pratap Chauhan, officials confirmed. The Revenue Department has reported that Pratap Chauhan has allegedly encroached upon nearly 20 bighas of forest land in the area. The remaining trees on this encroached stretch are scheduled to be removed on Sunday. The action is part of the enforcement of a July 2, 2025 Himachal Pradesh High Court order in which a division bench comprising Justices Vivek Singh Thakur and Bipin C. Negi directed the State Forest Department to remove all apple orchards from previously encroached forest land across the state. The court had taken strong note of repeated attempts by evicted encroachers to reoccupy forest land and had ordered strict recovery of costs from violators, including stump removal and forest replantation, to be charged as arrears of land revenue. Law and order in the Kotkhai area was maintained peacefully throughout the day, with the District Administration and police teams deployed to ensure smooth conduct of the operation. No resistance or disruption was reported during the felling process. Earlier, the District Magistrate had imposed a ban on carrying firearms in Village Chaithla under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, amid apprehensions of unrest due to previous instances where locals attempted to obstruct eviction drives. The ban remains in effect till July 18, and all licensed firearms in the area were ordered to be deposited with the local police. With the Forest Department and enforcement agencies acting in close coordination, the High Court's directive appears to be gaining full force on the ground, especially in sensitive regions like Kotkhai that have witnessed persistent encroachment over the years. Russian woman with two daughters found in 'spiritual hideout' in Karnataka cave
Kumta, July 12 (UNI) In an unusual tale that blends mystery, spirituality and survival, Karnataka Police today stumbled upon a Russian woman and her two young daughters living in a secluded cave nestled deep in the Ramatirtha hills of Kumta taluk in Uttara Kannada district. The woman, 40-year-old Mohi (Nina Kutina), was found seated in serene meditation beside a Rudra idol inside the cave, which had been converted into a modest dwelling. Her daughters, six-year-old Preya and four-year-old Ama, were with her. The cave was surrounded by steep slopes and thick forest, far removed from human habitation. The existence of the family came to light when a police patrol team, inspecting the area after a recent landslide, spotted clothes hanging out to dry near a rock face. Curious, the officers ventured closer—and uncovered a scene that felt straight out of a spiritual novella. 'We were stunned. The place was completely hidden, and if not for the drying clothes, we would've missed it,' an official said. Mohi, police revealed, had arrived in India years ago on a business visa that expired in 2017. While the exact duration of her stay in the country is yet to be ascertained, officials believe she had travelled from Goa, driven by a deep fascination with Hindu philosophy and the spiritual magnetism of Gokarna. 'She was living in complete isolation, spending her days in prayer and meditation. How she and her daughters survived remains a mystery,' a senior officer added. Police said the family had no contact with the local community and had quietly slipped into the wilderness, seeking spiritual refuge. Mohi and her daughters have since been relocated to a nearby ashram run by a Sadhvi, where they are under care. Meanwhile, authorities have launched deportation proceedings due to her long-expired visa, even as they probe how she managed to stay under the radar for so long. The discovery has sparked quiet curiosity across the region, a story of a foreign seeker who vanished into India's spiritual heartland, only to be found in a cave, far from the world's noise. MDMA worth over Rs 10 crore seized near Nepal border in Uttarakhand; woman arrested
Dehradun (Uttarakhand) [India], July 12 (ANI): In a major breakthrough under the 'Drugs Free Devbhoomi Mission,' the Uttarakhand Police on Saturday seized synthetic drugs worth over Rs 10.23 crore in the international market. Champawat Superintendent of Police (SP) Ajay Ganpati revealed that 5.688 kg of MDMA (methamphetamine) was recovered during a checking drive at Gadhigoth Bridge in Pampapur (Tanakpur). A 22-year-old woman, identified as Isha, wife of Rahul Kumar and a resident of Pampapur in Champawat district, was arrested after she was seen acting suspiciously and attempting to flee towards a canal with a black backpack. The search, conducted in the presence of Tanakpur Deputy Superintendent of Police (SP) Vandana Verma, led to the recovery of the high-value synthetic drug. Director General of Police (DGP) Deepam Seth announced a reward of Rs 50,000 for the police team involved in the successful operation. The seizure was made during a joint operation by Champawat District Police, Pithoragarh Police, and the Special Task Force (STF) near the Nepal border. Earlier today, on the instructions of the Uttarakhand Chief Minister, Pushkar Singh Dhami, 'Operation Kalanemi' was started against the impersonators who cheat people in the name of religion by playing with their feelings and beliefs in Devbhoomi. According to the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ajay Singh, the arrested individuals were allegedly preying on people's religious sentiments and were involved in duping unsuspecting victims. While speaking to ANI, the SSP said, 'Under this campaign, the police took action in various police station areas on Saturday and arrested 23 fake babas roaming around in the guise of saints and sadhus. Among the arrested fake babas, 10 persons are residents of other states.' The Chief Minister has instructed to identify all such persons and take strict action against them. As part of the initiative, Dehradun Police on Saturday arrested 23 individuals posing as sadhus in different areas of the district. Singh told ANI, 'In line with the instructions, all the station in-charges have been instructed to identify such persons in their respective police station areas, who disguise themselves as saints and mislead people, especially women and youth, and lure them to solve their personal or domestic problems and commit fraud with them, and take strict action against them.' Meanwhile, Hindu religious groups welcome Uttarakhand Govt's 'Op Kalanemi' targeting fake seers. (ANI)
