Barot was battling 'Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis' (IPF-fibrosis of lungs) for the last 11 years and had been receiving treatment at the Guru Nanak Hospital, as per his family. Chandra Barot is survived by his wife and a son.
In a heartfelt note, Bachchan said he was deeply saddened by the passing of his close friend Barot.
"Another and another sad moment .. Dear dear friend and my director of DON - Chandra Barot passed away this morning.
"It is difficult to put in words the loss. We worked together, yes, but he was more a family friend than any else ..I can only pray," the 82-year-old actor wrote on his blog.

Before making his directorial debut with Don, Barot served as an assistant director to actor-director Manoj Kumar in Purab Aur Pachhim, Roti Kapada Aur Makaan, Yaadgaar, and Shor.
After Don, Chandra Barot directed a Bengali film - Aashrita (1989).
Released in May 1978, Don, featuring Amitabh Bachchan in a double role – that of a mafioso and a simpleton – went on to become a blockbuster with its racy music, iconic dialogues and pulsating action.
One of the most celebrated films of Chandra Barot's career, Don had its fair share of ups and downs.
On the 40th anniversary of the movie in 2018, Chandra Barot in an interview with PTI shared an interesting insight that he, along with his friends Amitabh Bachchan, Zeenat Aman and Pran – all three who featured in 'Don' – decided to make the film to pull one of their producer friends, Nariman Irani, out of debt.
'Bawa's (Irani) wife was a hairdresser and knew writer Salim Khan. We asked her to put in a word for us. When we met Salim, he didn't have a script ready but told us, 'There is one subject which no one understands'.
"We said, 'we don't care, we just want 'Salim-Javed' written on the posters'. It was a ready script and we took it immediately. It didn't even have a title. Everyone in the industry called it 'Don waali script' (A script about a don),' Chandra Barot had recalled.
Sadly, Irani passed away six months before the release of Don, he added. The filmmaker also revealed that many big stars in the industry, including Dharmendra, Jeetendra and Dev Anand, had refused the movie, which was one of the highest-grossing Indian films of 1978.
Don was turned into a franchise by filmmaker Farhan Akhtar, son of Javed Akhtar, who had written the original script of the movie along with Salim Khan.
Film industry colleagues took to social media to mourn Chandra Barot's death, remembering him as a wonderful filmmaker who made one of the most entertaining Hindi movies – Don.

Actor Ramya files complaint after threats from Darshan fans
Bengaluru, Jul 28 (PTI) Actor and former Mandya MP Ramya on Monday filed a police complaint against online abusers, stating that she had received 'rape and murder threats" after calling out fans of Kannada actor Darshan for their comments on social media. 'As a celebrity, I am used to trolling, but I haven't experienced it to this extent," Ramya told reporters after filing her complaint at the Police Commissioner's office here. She said she had shared a report on the Supreme Court's proceedings in the Renukaswamy murder case on July 24, 'demanding justice" for the victim's family. Actor Darshan is a prime suspect in the case. 'The Supreme Court questioned the bail given to actor Darshan by the (Karnataka) High Court. I just put out the newspaper coverage of it, saying that 'Supreme Court is a ray of hope for the common people of India, and I hope there will be justice for Renukaswamy'. Darshan stans started trolling me immediately," she said. Ramya said the abuse included murder and rape threats, as well as 'very sexual and vulgar messages". 'The trolling was so bad that I started to think if the situation is like this for me (a star), what would it be like for normal girls. This is why I came here to file the complaint," she said. She added that if women do not speak up, instances of harassment will only increase. 'I thought to myself that it's about time that someone takes some action, because it just reflects on how low society has fallen," she claimed. Ramya said her complaint has been accepted and forwarded to the cybercrime department. 'I was promised due justice," she added. She said she had filed complaints against 43 accounts. 'There were a lot more, but then I just pulled out the ones that were really, really obscene," she said. She also expressed gratitude for the support she received from the State Women's Commission and the film body, Film Industry for Rights and Equality (FIRE). 'I am eternally grateful for their help, because I never reached out to them asking for help. They've come forward by themselves and supported me. I think in times like this, you can be courageous enough to fight alone, but if you get support, it just gives you more motivation to fight," she added. Ramya claimed that Darshan had not reached out to her. 'Two years ago, too, I flagged messages from his fans. Darshan had not reacted even then. They were not targeting me specifically, but they were targeting (actor) Yash, his wife, his family, (actor) Sudeep, his wife, and his family. It was so obscene; their children were being targeted," she alleged. Although she had posted about it, she did not file an official complaint at the time. 'I wish I did it then too. Maybe, this Renukaswamy incident wouldn't have happened," she added. Ramya said celebrities must lead by example. 'Tell your fans not to send vulgar or obscene messages," she insisted. Felt like the new boy in school but they were warm and welcoming: Tahir Raj Bhasin on 'Special Ops 2'
New Delhi, Actor Tahir Raj Bhasin says he felt like the new boy in school but everyone welcomed him warmly on the sets of Neeraj Pandey's "Special Ops 2", which features the actor in the role of an antagonist. Felt like the new boy in school but they were warm and welcoming: Tahir Raj Bhasin on 'Special Ops 2' Bhasin broke out with the Rani Mukerji-starrer "Mardaani" in 2014 where he played a negative role. His other notable ventures include "Chhichhore" and "Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein" and "83". The actor described his role of 'Collector' in "Special Ops 2" as someone who is "part gangster, part tech tycoon". "It's been about 10 years since I played an antagonist. What I really enjoy about the 'Collector' in 'Special Ops 2' is that he is a rebel with a cause," Bhasin told PTI in an interview. In the second season of the show, Kay Kay Menon's Himmat Singh is tackling cyber terrorism as a AI scientist is abducted from a tech summit in the show, which released on JioHotstar on July 18. The show also features Karan Tacker, Vinay Pathak and Muzammil Ibrahim. Bhasin said it is challenging to join a popular show in its second season. "I felt like the new boy in school where everyone else knew each other but the rest of the ensemble were very warm and welcoming. Karan, in particular, was very friendly. I spent time with Kay Kay Menon off set and it was like meeting a senior from college because you know someone who has been in Bombay so much longer that you, just knows what life is about a little more. "Every conversation I would have with Kay Kay was very enlightening... What I see in Kay Kay's work is that he is always truthful and authentic to what the part is, he's not judging the character and that's something that I hope to take forward in my work as well," he added. Which is why going head to head with Menon in the show felt like a big compliment for the actor. "I gravitate towards lead parts that are disruptive... As the show unravels, you discover why he operates in certain ways and there is an element of mystique to his character but in his mind he is a sort of reformer. One of the lines that has really stuck with the audience is 'I am also in the business of cyber security, just on a different side'." Bhasin said unlike conventional antagonists, his character relies completely on brains. "If the show had been released 10-15 years ago, it would have seemed like science fiction but in the recent past we have seen so many cyber attacks and financial attacks happen that it's all too real," he said. The actor is currently shooting for a Netflix show alongside Parineeti Chopra, which is directed by Renzil D'Silva.
