Experts have issued a stark caution to drivers, highlighting a common parking mistake that could leave them with hefty fines and jeopardize the safety of their car. Select Car Leasing has stressed that vehicles should never be left unattended without the handbrake being applied, even if they're parked in gear.
Managing director Graham Conway implored motorists to engage the parking brake whenever leaving their vehicle. His advice was uncompromising: "The law is clear - you must use your vehicle's parking brake each and every time you leave it unattended."

He added a stern warning stating, "Simply leaving it in gear - even if you're on a completely flat road - to prevent movement simply isn't enough, and you're liable for a major fine and points on your licence."
Under the rules set out by the Highway Code, it is mandated that drivers must shut off the engine and put the handbrake on before exiting an unattended vehicle, reports the Express.
Although some may regard it as common sense, adhering to this guideline can avoid the potential for a vehicle to roll away, potentially colliding with other cars or endangering people nearby.
Offences stemming from a disengaged handbrake leading to an accident can incur fines as steep as £2,500 and add penalty points to a driver's record, which can subsequently drive up insurance costs.
Conway recognised that though opting for the gearbox rather than the handbrake could reduce wear on certain parts, it's still not worth the gamble of facing the fine.
He explained: "Some drivers might argue that leaving their car in gear prevents unnecessary wear and tear on the handbrake, meaning lower maintenance costs further down the line.
"But that view ignores crucial safety implications and is also a false economy when you consider how steep the fines are."

While this may be good news for those seeking a car that could have fewer mechanical problems over its lifespan, there's one problem, the Ignis is now no longer on sale. Despite Suzuki halting production of the Ignis in the UK this year, Nyo insists it remains a savvy purchase on the second-hand market. He explained: "Despite Suzuki discontinuing their Ignis model production in the UK this year, the compact crossover SUV has become a popular choice for those buyers looking for a subcompact model. "The crossover design means that this small car is city and commuter-friendly, whilst also providing SUV capabilities such as four-wheel drive. "Our test results are in, and this is a car you can trust! The research shows that more than nine in ten models passed their MOT on average in the UK in 2024/2025." Although new Ignis models are off the table, the runners-up, Lexus UX and Porsche Macan SUVs, are still in production. The Suzuki boasted an impressive MOT pass rate of 94.64 percent, with the Lexus and Porsche trailing closely at 94.20 percent and 93.41 percent respectively. Nyo commented further on the top performers. He said: "The top three is made up of SUV's and the Lexus UX and the Porsche Macan follow in second and third on our podium. "There were 5,583 MOT tests carried out on Lexus UX vehicles, and 5,259 tests passed, whilst 3,453 tests were passed for the Porsche Macan out of 3,697 tests completed." This MOT data emerges amid growing concerns that future pass rates could decline, not due to vehicle quality but owing to the worsening condition of the roads they travel on. Earlier this year, reports surfaced that the expense incurred due to pothole-related car damage had soared to a staggering £1.7bn. Such detriment could potentially lead to an MOT failure later down the line. Commenting on this issue, Kwik Fit's Dan Joyce issued a stark warning. He said: "It's concerning to see that the downward trend of the last two years has gone into reverse in the latest figures. "Anything which adds unnecessary costs to motorists is especially unwelcome in the current economic climate but even the financial burden is outweighed by the risk to safety. "The main components which bear the bulk of the damage - tyres and wheels, suspension and steering - are interlinked."

"Now this is a really strong car. It's got a really good VW platform that sits underneath it. They are reliable, they are rough and tough. You can bash them round. They've got hard plastics on the inside. "If they get stained on the seats, they clean up really well. Think about those littleuns' in the back drinking their fruit juice. These cars are really hardy and that's why I'd recommend a Skoda Yeti. "And Skoda aren't like they used to be. They really are great cars today."
