Balasore Self-Immolation Case: Odisha CM Majhi announces financial assistance of Rs 20 lakh to family
Chief Minister Majhi expressed deep sorrow over the passing away of the 20-year-old Fakir Mohan Autonomous College student and assured that all guilty will be 'strictly' punished.
'Hearing the news of the demise of the victimised student of Fakir Mohan Autonomous College, the Honorable Chief Minister Shri Mohan Charan Majhi has expressed deep sorrow and prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul. The Honorable Chief Minister has directed that a proper investigation of the incident be conducted and that all the guilty be punished strictly in accordance with the law,' Odisha CMO wrote in a post on X.
Additionally, he has announced the provision of financial assistance of 20 lakh rupees from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund for the closest relatives of the deceased student's family,' Odisha CMO added.
Earlier in the day, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi called the death of the 20-year-old Balasore student an 'organised murder by the BJP's system,' accusing the BJP of failing to protect the victim.
Gandhi alleged that the student, who set herself on fire after facing sexual harassment, was subjected to repeated threats, torments and humiliation instead of receiving justice.
In a post on X, LoP Gandhi wrote, 'The death of a daughter fighting for justice in Odisha is nothing less than a murder by the BJP's system. That brave student raised her voice against sexual harassment, but instead of delivering justice, she was threatened, tormented, and repeatedly humiliated. Those who were supposed to protect her kept breaking her.'
On Monday, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Bhubaneswar confirmed the death of the 20-year-old student from Fakir Mohan Autonomous College in Odisha's Balasore, who had attempted self-immolation.
The Department of Burn Centre, AIIMS Bhubaneswar, said in a statement that the patient was brought to the casualty on July 12 and was referred from Balasore District Headquarters Hospital to AIIMS Bhubaneswar.
The 20-year-old student set herself on fire after allegedly facing prolonged sexual harassment by her college's Head of Department. Despite lodging a formal complaint and seeking help from the principal, her pleas were ignored, leading to the tragic incident. The incident occurred at Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College. (ANI)

BAMS student among 2 held for MD peddling
Akola: The Khadan police arrested a second-year BAMS student allegedly operating as a drug peddler and another person under the ongoing anti-narcotics drive 'Operation Prahar'. The police seized mephedrone (MD) valued at Rs 2.2 lakh, motorcycles, and mobile phones, in all worth Rs3.90 lakh, in the operation. The police had received a tip-off on Tuesday that two men were likely to sell MD near Matrubhoomi Press in Adarsh Colony. Police laid a trap and intercepted two individuals who arrived on a motorcycle in a suspicious manner. They provided evasive responses during questioning, resulting in a search that led to the recovery of 46.3gms MD, said police. One of the arrested accused was identified as Mohammad Yasin Mohammad Asif (23), a native of Panchgavhan, Telhara taluka, who currently resides at Firdaus Colony, Gawalipura in Akola. He is a second-year BAMS student at an ayurveda college in Akola and is believed to be the main operator of the drug supply racket, said police. SLUG: IN OVER A YEAR Gandhinagar: Over a year since the 18th Lok Sabha was constituted, Members of Parliament (MPs) from Gujarat have utilised only 4.2% of their allocated local area development funds, raising serious questions about the pace of grassroots development work in the state. According to a report by Mahiti Adhikar Gujarat Pahel (MAGP)—an organisation working to promote transparency and accountability—no development work was completed in 14 out of 26 Lok Sabha constituencies of Gujarat since the new Lok Sabha came into existence in June 2024. For Gujarat's 26 MPs, this amounts to a collective allocation of Rs 254.8 crore. However, by July 5, only Rs 10.72 crore had been spent. The Bharuch constituency recorded the highest utilisation at Rs 1.73 crore, followed by Patan with Rs 1.56 crore, and Sabarkantha with Rs 1.08 crore. In sharp contrast, zero spending was reported in key constituencies such as Ahmedabad East, Ahmedabad West, Banaskantha, Chhota Udepur, Gandhinagar, and Navsari. ‘May use position to influence kid': No HC bail to priest in child sex abuse case
Mumbai: Considering his position in the community, Bombay high court rejected the bail plea of a priest who sexually abused a minor in Oct 2020 inside a temple. "This position of authority and influence in the local community creates a significant risk that the accused may use his social standing to influence the victim child and his family members. The victim being a minor child is particularly vulnerable to such influence, and any attempt to tamper with his testimony could seriously prejudice the prosecution case and defeat the ends of justice," said Justice Amit Borkar on Monday. According to the prosecution, on Oct 26, 2020, between 5-5:30pm, the accused (then 45) took advantage of the minor (then 15), gave him Rs 40 and made him engage in a sexual act. The priest was arrested the next day by Bhiwandi city police and an FIR registered under IPC Section 377 (unnatural offences) and Posco Act, including for penetrative sexual assault. Justice Borkar agreed the CCTV footage "graphically records the entire incident as narrated by the victim child". He said the grant of bail is a judicial discretion which must be exercised judiciously. "In cases under the Pocso Act , the courts are required to be particularly cautious as these offences involve the safety and protection of children, who are the most vulnerable members of society," he said.
