What's wrong with what Kamal Haasan said: DMK MLA backs actor amid Kannada row

India Today05-06-2025
Tamil Nadu's PWD Minister and senior DMK leader KN Nehru has come out in support of actor-politician Kamal Haasan after he faced backlash over his remarks linking Kannada's roots to Tamil. 'What is wrong with what he said? All languages, including Telgu and Malayalam, came from Tamil. There is nothing wrong with what he said. The Judge had deliberately said something,' said Minister Nehru, extending support to the actor.advertisementThe controversy erupted following Kamal Haasan's statement that 'Kannada branched from Tamil,' sparking widespread outrage in Karnataka.Despite demands for an apology, Kamal Haasan refused to apologise, saying that his remarks were misunderstood. 'Love will never apologise,' Haasan maintained, refusing to withdraw his comment even after the matter reached the Karnataka High Court.
As the controversy intensified, Kamal Haasan's legal team told the High Court that 'Art can wait, release can wait,' as the actor decided not to release his upcoming film Thug Life in Karnataka.Former BJP State President Tamilisai Sounderrajan criticised Kamal Haasan, accusing him of promoting divisive language politics for personal gain. 'Kamal Haasan took Vishwaroopam and, when a controversy emerged over religion, said that if the controversy is true, he will leave the country in 2013. But today he is acting against the unity of India for his own interest. You want Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam when you want to make money out of Cinema. But you are taking language politics as a fake-faced politician. People like us who love Tamil urge you not to destroy the unity of the nation,' Sounderrajan said.Tune InMust Watch

How Karnataka's iconic Mysore Sandal Soap overshot targets, clocked highest ever sales

(NOTE: This article was originally published in the India Today issue dated July 14, 2025)In mid-May, one of Karnataka's best-known cultural brands, Mysore Sandal Soap, found itself in a bit of lather. Pro-Kannada activists were upset that Karnataka Soaps & Detergents Ltd (KS&DL), the state-owned company that manufactures the iconic 109-year-old soap, had chosen actor Tamannaah Bhatia as its brand ambassador instead of a Kannadiga celebrity. But even as it hastened to defuse the row, KS&DL had much to thank the controversy for. The firm clocked its best-ever sales for the month of May at Rs 186 crore, a 24 per cent bump from the target of Rs 150 The soap maker has been on a winning streak in the past few years, with annual sales almost doubling since 2020-21 to Rs 1,780 crore in 2024-25; net profit grew almost four-fold from Rs 113 crore to Rs 415 crore in the same period. Ramping up production and online marketing played a big role in this, says its MD, Prashanth India accounts for over 80 per cent of the sales for KS&DL, with Andhra Pradesh the biggest market. Hence, the push into other regions, especially the north. It's also why 'pan-India star' Tamannaah was signed up. KS&DL has set itself a target of Rs 5,000 crore in annual turnover by 2028. It is investing Rs 250 crore in a new plant at Vijayapura in north Karnataka and also eyeing diversification into new products. 'We are taking it nationaland even international in the future,' says M.B. Patil, Karnataka's minister of large and medium industries. 'Then perhaps we'll need a Hollywood celebrity to endorse us,' he to India Today Magazine- EndsMust Watch

Siddaramaiah's dream to match Urs' tenure as CM edges closer to reality

Bengaluru: Siddaramaiah 's declaration earlier this week that he will complete a full five-year term as chief minister may have quelled immediate speculation of a change at the top, but his partymen say it reflects a deeper ambition: To match, or even surpass, D Devaraj Urs as Karnataka's longest-serving CM. If Siddaramaiah stays in office till Jan 6 next year, he will have equalled Urs' record of seven years and 238 days as CM. Urs, a pioneer of backward-class empowerment, served two terms in the 1970s and remains a political icon. Siddaramaiah, who draws support from a similar social base, is known to have privately expressed a desire to break that record. "This is Siddaramaiah's legacy project. Completing a full term is about cementing his place in Karnataka's political history," said MN Patil, political analyst. Though the two had together steered Congress to victory in the 2023 assembly polls, their relationship has remained uneasy. Amid signs of growing friction, Congress' high command dispatched AICC general secretary Randeep Surjewala to Bengaluru this week to calm things down. Following his intervention, the two publicly stated there would be no change in CM until 2028 — a claim that observers suggest should be taken with copious amounts of salt. Siddaramaiah has resisted calls for a mid-term change, a key demand of Shivakumar's supporters. However, sources say the high command is disinclined to make changes before Jan. "Siddaramaiah believes this is his last term. Matching Urs is personal for him," said a senior Congress functionary. Urs, who became CM in 1972, was the first backward-class politician to hold the post in a state historically led by Lingayats and Vokkaligas. He introduced the concept of Ahinda — a Kannada acronym for minorities, backward classes, and Dalits — which reshaped Karnataka's political landscape. Siddaramaiah, from the Kuruba community, revived Ahinda politics in the 2000s after leaving JD(S). He joined Congress in 2006, seeking a broader platform to consolidate marginalised communities — much like Urs decades earlier. "Both Urs and Siddaramaiah came from politically astute but socially backward backgrounds. Urs gave Ahinda a name, Siddaramaiah gave it continuity," said political commentator Vishwas Shetty. Both chief ministers also had confrontations with national figures. Urs opposed Indira Gandhi's emergency and was expelled from Congress in 1979. Siddaramaiah clashed with HD Deve Gowda over succession in JD(S) and was expelled in 2005. Urs led Congress to a massive 165-seat win in 1972 with 52% vote share. Under Siddaramaiah in 2023, Congress won 135 seats with 42% — its best in 34 years.

Bengaluru court restrains Kamal Haasan from making statements defaming Kannada

A Bengaluru city civil and sessions court on Friday (July 4, 2025) issued an ex-parte temporary injunction restraining actor Kamal Haasan from making any statements having the effect of causing hurt or defaming the Kannada language, literature, land and culture. Madhu N.R., judge of the 30th Additional City Civil and Sessions Court, passed the order on a suit filed by the Kannada Sahithya Parishat (KSP), Bengaluru. The suit has been filed in connection with Mr. Haasan's controversial statement, made on April 24 during the launch of his movie 'Thug Life' in Chennai, in which the actor had claimed that 'Kannada is born out of Tamil'. 'The reason that actor's statement caused immense pain and anguish to people is because it is manifestly and objectively untrue and it has been made with a sense of chauvinism, superiority and arrogance....' it has been contended in the suit. Though the issue of opposition to screen movie 'Thug Life' in Karnataka has been adjudicated before the apex court, the KSP has said that the 'defamatory and fallacious statement made by the defendant remains and continuous to hurt the sentiments of the people (including that of KSP) and has caused immense disrepute, disgrace and humiliation.' Pointing out that the actor's controversial statement is 'patently and admittedly' false, the KSP has said that 'in fact, both the languages are sister languages...' While pointing out that Mr. Haasan has refused to tender an apology for his 'false statement', the KSP has sought a direction to him to tender an unconditional apology to the people of Karnataka and Kannadigas and withdraw his controversial statement on Kannada language.
