43 000 Mpumalanga residents lose jobs in first quarter of 2025
The results for the first quarter of 2025 show that the total number of unemployed youth (15 to 34 years) increased by 151 000 to 4.8 million, while employed youth recorded a decrease of 153 000 to 5.7 million. As a result, the youth unemployment rate increased from 44.6% in the fourth quarter of 2024 to 46.1% in the first quarter of 2025.

Currently, youth unemployment in Mpumalanga is at 46.4%, one of the highest in the country. Unemployed jobseekers stand on the sides of the roads in Mbombela every day, seeking temporary job opportunities.
During an interview with a jobseeker in the CBD, Carol Ndlovu (not her real name) said due to the high number of unemployed people in the area it has become difficult to find permeant employment. Ndlovu said many people prefer to clean their own homes and the increase in unemployed people has made it more difficult to find work opportunities.
'The hardest days are when I have to borrow money for the bus fee, yet I go home without any money. Some days we go home without anyone offering us work and this means I do not get to raise money for transport to go back home. I tried to apply for work, however, I struggled to find opportunities. I have a family, so I decided to wake up every morning, get onto a bus and leave my township so that I might put food on the table.'
Siyabonga Maziya, another unemployed resident, said they face various challenges in their quest to make ends meet. 'We sometimes stand on the side of the road and we are unable to take money home because we could not find any opportunities. We have tried to apply for jobs but we are not getting anything.'

In a statement, Grovè-Morgan said the DA is concerned that over 40 000 residents of the province have lost their jobs in the first quarter of this year.
The QLFS report also revealed that the majority of the job losses were in the agriculture, mining and construction sectors.
'These job losses paint a very bleak picture of Mpumalanga's job market, where the unemployment rate increased to 35.4 % from 34.7% at the same time last year. Furthermore, the number of discouraged work seekers (expanded unemployment rate) in Mpumalanga increased to over 2.5 million (49.3%) out of a population of 5.1 million.
'The province's lost generation, the youth, contributes significantly to the expanded unemployment rate. This is a crisis that needs to be tackled by both the provincial government and the private sector.'
The newspaper contacted the Office of the Premier for a comment and was referred to the Department of Economic Development and Tourism. By the time of going to press the department had not responded to the enquiry.

KDM cancels R350k Durban July Ballito Experience sponsorship
The KwaDukuza municipality (KDM) has officially withdrawn its R350 000 Durban July Ballito Experience sponsorship following political pressure and public scrutiny. The decision was made during a special council meeting held on Wednesday, July 2, just days before the first event on Friday, July 4. Speaking at the event launch at the Sangweni Tourist Information Centre in Ballito on June 3, Enterprise iLembe CEO, Siyabonga Mazibuko said the event was expected to create up to 500 local jobs, although it was not confirmed whether these would be full-time or contract positions. Enterprise iLembe and KDM were met with criticism from the Democratic Alliance (DA) in KwaDukuza, who along with The MK Party, did not support the sponsorship. DA caucus leader Privi Makhan accused the KwaDukuza Council's leadership of misusing public funds to benefit politically connected individuals under the pretext of economic development. Makhan called it a victory for residents and ratepayers. She also accused the ANC-led council of attempting to 'steamroll' the payment through despite clear opposition. 'Their plan to bankroll an event outside our jurisdiction was a clear betrayal of responsible governance for an event being held outside KDM,' said Makhan. 'Our residents deserve leaders who put their needs first, not those leaders who are merely political side-shows, attempting to pay off their debt through council coffers.' The Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse will be the epicentre of this prestigious horse racing event taking place on Saturday, drawing close to 45 000 local and international visitors. Court declares Rooiwal tender invalid
The metro has welcomed a landmark judgment by the North Gauteng High Court, which has declared the controversial 2019 tender awarded to the consortium appointed for the upgrade of the Rooiwal Waste Water Treatment Plant as invalid. The ruling not only nullifies the R250-million contract but also orders the companies – Blackhead Consulting, NJR Projects and CMS Water Engineering – to repay profits made from the tender to the metro. The judgment follows years of public outcry, investigative scrutiny, and legal action over the botched contract that left Rooiwal in a state of disrepair. After the court ruling, Mayor Dr Nasiphi Moya reaffirmed the metro's commitment to clean governance and accountability. 'This judgment affirms what we have long maintained: contracts awarded through unethical and irregular processes undermine service delivery, compromise governance, and erode public trust,' she said. 'We assure the residents of Tshwane that this administration will act decisively to give full force and effect to the order.' The court has instructed the consortium to submit documentation of project-related expenses within 60 days. Should they fail to do so, the metro will appoint an independent contractor to determine the actual profits made, which the companies will then be required to repay. The irregularities surrounding the Rooiwal tender have been under investigation since 2022, when a forensic report concluded that the consortium lacked the required expertise to carry out a project of this magnitude. The awarding of the tender has since been linked to politically connected businessman Edwin Sodi and five senior metro officials, referred to as the 'Rooiwal Five'. They were removed from their posts but remain embroiled in Labour Court proceedings as attempts are made to reinstate them. Moya highlighted the progress already made at Rooiwal under new leadership. 'Work to complete the upgrades at the Rooiwal Waste Water Treatment Plant has progressed successfully. Phase 1A was completed ahead of schedule, and Phase 1B is currently underway,' she confirmed. 'We are committed to ethical leadership, clean governance, and delivering services to our residents.' The DA, which led the coalition government in Tshwane at the time and launched litigation against the consortium, also welcomed the ruling. 'This is a significant victory for clean governance and accountability in the metro,' said Cilliers Brink, DA leader in the Tshwane council. 'Now is the time for the metro to tell the public how far the process has gone to prevent that consortium from ever doing business with the state again.' Brink emphasised that the attempt to blacklist the Sodi-linked companies was initiated in 2024 under the DA-led coalition. The process was initially delayed after National Treasury found flaws in the metro's first application. However, the recent court ruling strengthens the metro's position. 'The public deserves to know what measures are being taken to ensure that what happened at Rooiwal never happens again,' Brink added. 'We cannot allow companies with poor track records and political connections to walk away unscathed.' The Rooiwal debacle has long been emblematic of the challenges facing the metro. The wastewater treatment plant, which is responsible for supplying clean water to Hammanskraal and surrounding areas, has not been operating optimally for years. Poor workmanship, missed deadlines, and stalling on the site forced the metro to terminate the contract in August 2022. In a high-profile oversight visit to the Rooiwal and Klipdrift water treatment sites earlier this year, Moya was accompanied by Minister of Water and Sanitation, Pemmy Majodina. The minister did not mince her words about the legacy of the failed project. 'We cannot allow people to do Mickey Mouse work and think they will get away with it,' said Majodina. 'This plant is supposed to provide clean water to our people.' The consortium's abandonment of the site, followed by the findings of corruption and maladministration, led to the involvement of the Special Investigating Unit (SIU). While political instability, including shifts in coalition support, hampered previous attempts to enforce accountability, the court's ruling has now given the metro a decisive legal tool to act.
