Policy shift: Health cover rates vary across states
Bajaj Allianz General Insurance has launched customised state-wise health insurance plans, adjusting premiums and benefits to reflect local medical costs, infrastructure, and regulations.
Bajaj Allianz General Insurance's initiative is designed to address inefficiencies in traditional one-size-fits-all pricing. "The idea behind this cover is to increase coverage of the missing-middle by making health insurance more affordable for them," said Bhaskar Nerurkar, head of health administration at Bajaj Allianz General Insurance. "At present, there is an element of cross-subsidy where people in areas with low-cost healthcare end up subsidising for those with higher costs.
"
Narayana Health was among the first to offer region-specific policies linked to its hospitals. Bajaj Allianz General Insurance takes this further by refining prices at the state level. While policies are sold based on current residence, policyholders can still receive treatment anywhere in the country.
"Regional variations in healthcare claims frequency and severity across India are significantly influenced by diverse factors, including the specific causes for hospitalization," said Satish Gidugu, CEO of Medi Assist, the largest third-party administrator.

1 2 Bhubaneswar: Chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Sunday promised stringent action against those responsible for forcing the 20-year-old college student to set herself ablaze after her sexual harassment complaint against a faculty member remained unaddressed by the institution's authorities. Majhi, following his return from Delhi, visited AIIMS Bhubaneswar, where he met the girl battling for her life. The CM said the girl, a second-year student pursuing an integrated BEd programme at a govt college in Balasore district, is in an extremely critical state. "The govt has taken the matter with all seriousness to ensure that all those responsible are not spared. A committee of the higher education department has already started its ground investigation. While immediate action was already taken on Saturday, further strictest action will follow after completion of the ongoing probe," Majhi said. After consoling the distraught parents, Majhi said the medical team is collaborating virtually with their Delhi colleagues to save the girl's life. He indicated the possibility of airlifting her to AIIMS, Delhi if her condition stabilises enough for her to be moved. BMC focus on destroying mosquito breeding sources, dengue awareness
1 2 Bhubaneswar: With the city reporting 114 dengue cases so far this year, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) is focusing on spreading awareness about the disease, its symptoms, transmission and preventive measures in every household. The initiative assumes significance as a survey by the health wing of BMC revealed that larvae of Aedes mosquito, carriers of the dengue virus, were found more in containers outside rather than in households. In 20 household samples, mosquito larvae were found. On the other hand, larvae were found in water samples from 30 containers. "Clean water stagnating in such places ultimately turns into larvae breeding grounds, leading to the growth of Aedes mosquitoes," said a BMC officer. BMC allayed fears by stating the test positivity rate was around 1.3% per 100 samples, which is not alarming. "If the average daily testing number is 246, it can be inferred that two cases are reported daily, which is not at all alarming. Most of the cases were reported in June and July as the monsoon arrived a bit early this time," said BMC additional commissioner Suvendu Sahu. Most truckers suffer hearing loss: Study
Lucknow: The constant hum of engines, blaring horns, and relentless traffic noise is quietly damaging the hearing of long-distance truck drivers. A new study found that over half of the drivers tested showed signs of hearing loss—even in their better-hearing ear. Published in the Jan–Feb 2025 issue of Noise & Health, the study was conducted by Anupam Mehrotra (AKTU), Sheo P. Shukla (Rajkiya Engineering College Banda), and Prof Manish K. Manar (KGMU). The team tested the hearing of 200 male long-distance truck drivers from Lucknow using pure tone audiometry. Results showed 50.5% had hearing loss in their better ear. The right ear was more affected in 73.5% of cases (147 drivers), 14% (28) had loss in both ears, and 12.5% (25) in the left ear. "This may be because the right ear is closer to the window while driving," said Prof Manar of KGMU's community medicine department. At 4000 Hz—typically the first frequency affected by Noise-Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL)—abnormal thresholds were found in 84% of right ears. "Lifestyle habits like poor sleep and alcohol use increase vulnerability," said researcher Arvind K Shukla. While past Indian studies focused on car or auto-rickshaw drivers, truckers—who endure prolonged noise—remain under-researched. "This is among the first major studies on hearing loss in Indian truck drivers," said Mehrotra. "We hope it encourages action from transport companies and health authorities." The team recommended regular hearing check-ups, use of earplugs or noise-cancelling devices, awareness drives, and better working conditions to reduce fatigue. "Our truck drivers are the backbone of the economy," Mehrotra added. "Protecting their hearing is vital for their well-being and the nation's functioning."
