Surge in traffic violation cases in Pune, app logs 4,071 complaints in 40 days
According to the latest data, of total complaints received till July 22, 3,101 challans were successfully issued wherein 930 complaints were rejected and 40 cases are currently under process. June alone saw 1,319 cases with 951 challans generated and 368 complaints rejected. In July, the daily data reveals a consistent number of reports, peaking on July 22 with 218 complaints (143 challans, 35 rejections, 40 in process) and July 12 with 181 complaints and 148 challans issued. The digital drive has shown exceptional efficiency with over 76% of complaints resulting in challans while only 22% were rejected.
The Public Traffic Police (PTP) App allows Pune residents to report traffic violations directly through their smartphones. The reports are reviewed by traffic authorities and if found valid challans are generated digitally. The overall rejection rate across the reporting period stands at approximately 23%, with most rejections attributed to insufficient evidence or blurred visuals submitted by users.
The app launched to empower citizens to report traffic violations in real-time, continues to be an essential tool in enhancing road safety and enforcing traffic discipline. According to additional police commissioner Manoj Patil, the increase in reporting indicates rising civic engagement and awareness about traffic rules.
'We are actively encouraging more citizens to continue using the app responsibly. The more eyes on the road, the better our enforcement can be. The traffic department is also reviewing patterns to improve its enforcement strategy and may consider expanding the app's capabilities based on citizen feedback,' he said.
To improve traffic regulation and boost public involvement, deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar unveiled the 'PTP TrafficCop' mobile application at Vidhan Bhavan on June 14. Designed by the Pune city police, the app empowers citizens to actively participate in traffic management by enabling them to report traffic violations and road-related issues instantly through their smartphones.
The app enables responsible citizens with no pending traffic challans to capture and submit photos or videos of traffic violations directly through smartphones. Each submission is reviewed by the traffic department within 48 hours and if verified, an e-challan is issued to the offender. The identity of the complainant remains confidential.
In addition to reporting traffic violations, the app also allows users to flag road-related issues such as potholes, accidents, waterlogging, oil spills, fallen trees, and abandoned vehicles. These reports are routed to the municipal departments helping authorities respond more swiftly and effectively to public safety and infrastructure concerns.

Vadodara: A pocket knife, gas lighter, mosquito net and water bottle all cost the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) fire and emergency services department Rs 3,639.71 apiece. Not only were the prices obscenely high, but identical prices for incomparable items also went through the system unnoticed as nobody was checking. This alleged procurement scam has led to the suspension of three officials, including chief fire officer Manoj Patil, deputy chief fire officer Naitik Bhatt and the then head of the fire department, Dr Devesh Patel, who is also the medical officer (health). The purchase was made by the fire brigade for expansion of services to newer areas and to deal with the floods. Bids were invited using the govt e-marketplace (GeM) portal. A third-party inspection (TPI) agency and the VMC auditing department were also involved, as was the standing committee. Yet, items worth Rs 3.17 crore were purchased with some items at hugely inflated prices. The fire department had raised the requirement for the tools, after which tenders were invited between Feb 27 and March 10. The tender scrutiny committee met to discuss the tenders on March 20, and a formal proposal was prepared for the standing committee. The standing committee cleared the proposal but reduced the number of inflatable boats and engines to eight each instead of the 16 demanded, along with other required equipment and accessories. As some other equipment was to be procured per boat, quantities should have been halved, but these were kept according to the original requirement of 16 boats, and a clarification in this regard was also put on record. It was these pieces of equipment and accessories that were priced obscenely high. Apart from 16 pocket knives, as well as an equal number of gas lighters and other items, the list included 16 emergency whistles that were priced at Rs 3,238.73 each, 16 rucksacks at Rs 10,919 apiece and some other items whose prices raise eyebrows. The total procurement amounted to Rs 3,17,67,149. VMC standing committee chairman Sheetal Mistry said the committee usually does not go into minute details of pricing of items as these are looked at by the administrative wing. "This was a procurement for disaster management and was done through the portal. Tender procedures were also followed. One must understand that we are not experts on such equipment," he said. Sources said the TPI agency only checks the specifications of the equipment and if the quality is up to the mark. The audit department only went through the bills and ensured that procedures were followed, the documentation was in order and the goods procured were in line with the quantity in the bill. The department was not supposed to investigate pricing. This led to the high prices not being red flagged. VMC commissioner Arun Mahesh Babu said the civic body was looking to streamline its procurement process after this incident and issue new advisories. On the extent of inflation in the prices, he said that this would become clear after a departmental inquiry. He, however, said that prices of some items were highly inflated.

1 2 Vijayawada: AP Police Seva mobile application, once a key digital platform for lodging complaints, verifying social media news, and accessing a host of citizen services, is currently non-functional and has been removed from both the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. The disruption began during the 2024 general elections and marks the second such outage—earlier seen during the arrest of TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu in September 2023. Tamil Nadu people are not naive to get provoked by Madurai Adheenam's ‘unnecessary' comments: Madras High Court
Are the people of Tamil Nadu so naive to get provoked by 'unnecessary' remarks made by Madurai Adheenam who had termed a minor road accident as an alleged assassination attempt against him, suspected involvement of Pakistan and claimed that the alleged assassins were wearing skull caps and sporting beards? asked Justice D. Bharatha Chakravarthy of the Madras High Court on Tuesday (August 5, 2025). The judge posed the question when Additional Public Prosecutor (APP) R. Muniyapparaj vehemently opposed a petition filed by by the ascetic Harihara Gnanasambanda Desigar to quash a First Information Report (FIR) registered against him by the cyber crime wing of the Greater Chennai City Police on the basis of a complaint lodged by R. Rajendiran, an advocate. The FIR was registered on June 24 under Sections 192 (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause rioting), 196(1)(a) (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion), 353(1)(b) (statements conducing to public mischief) and 353(2) (making false statements to create communal enmity) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). After watching the CCTV footage of the road accident played by the APP on a tablet, the judge was convinced that it was the Adheenam's car which had been driven rashly when he travelled from Madurai to Chennai on May 2. He said, a major accident had been averted because of the sagacity of the other car driver who had pulled the brakes at the right moment. 'Merely because the occupants of the other car were Muslims, the petitioner appears to have escalated the issue. Are they not your brethren? Are they also not as much Indian as you are?' the judge asked the Adheenam's counsel Ramaswamy Meyyappan who replied that the ascetic was forced to speak only by the mediapersons at a private event in Chennai. The counsel also stated the petitioner had nowhere named any religion and the FIR itself had been registered nearly two months after the remarks were allegedly made. On the other hand, the APP claimed multiple protests were held across Tamil Nadu against the Adheenam's remarks and that cognisable offences had been clearly made out warranting registration of a FIR. The APP also stated many private complaints too had been filed against the Adheenam for his remarks. However, the judge felt the resources of the police department could be utilised better for probing serious criminal cases than cases of the present nature. He, later, granted time till August 14 for the police to file its counter affidavit to the FIR quash petition.
