Tomás Romero picks up second victory in three starts and New York City FC beats Toronto FC 3-1

NEW YORK (AP) — Hannes Wolf had a goal and an assist, Tomás Romero picked up his second victory in three starts and New York City FC beat Toronto FC 3-1 on Thursday night. New York City (9-7-4) moved into sixth place in the Eastern Conference with 31 points. Wolf opened the scoring in the 20th minute with his team-leading ninth goal of the season. His side-volley shot went off the far post and redirected off the other post into the net for a 1-0 lead. It was just the seventh first-half goal this season for NYCFC, which entered lowest in the league in that category. Mitja Ilenic made it 2-0 in the 49th with his second goal of the season. Agustín Ojeda dribbled into the area for a cross that deflected off Ilenic inside the far post. Toronto (4-11-5) cut its deficit to 2-1 in the 70th on an own goal. Theo Corbeanu got past his defender along the right sideline and got to the endline for a cross that went off defender Justin Haak and Romero's arm into the net. But four minutes later, Kevin O'Toole scored his first goal since March 9, 2024 off a great pass by Wolf. Toronto, which entered with just 25 goals allowed this season, was looking for its first road victory against New York City since September 2020. ___ AP soccer:

🚨 NYCFC break into top-six with win over Toronto

NYCFC have given themselves a boost in the Eastern Conference playoff spots with a comfortable win over the new-look Toronto FC to kick off the MLS weekend. Scorers: Wolf 20', Ilenič 49', O'Toole 74' ; Romero (OG) 70' Advertisement Inconsistency has plagued NYCFC this season, but they got just the start they were looking for in search of their second win in three MLS games. Talismanic forward Hannes Wolf opened the scoring for the home side with a peach of a volley in off the post. While Toronto did create a few chances of their own to pull level, any chance of a turnaround was killed early in the second-half thanks to a scrappy Mitja Ilenič to double NYCFC's lead, and ultimately ensure all three points went to the hosts, despite the two teams trading a pair of goals in the final 20 minutes. The win sees Pascal Jansen's side break back into the top-six in the Eastern Conference after sitting on the bubble for the playoff spots. 📸 Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images

Indiana Fever vs Las Vegas Aces box score: Aliyah Boston, A'ja Wilson final stats

INDIANAPOLIS — There wasn't a championship hangover for the Indiana Fever two days after winning the Commissioner's Cup final. No, the Fever scored the game's first six points and never looked back in a 81-54 win over the Las Vegas Aces on Thursday night at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Yes, A'ja Wilson was great, but the Fever's defense clamped down for a dominating victory, their third straight. Kelsey Mitchell was strong initiating the offense and getting her own. Aliyah Boston was her usual self, and Natasha Howard added a double-double as the Fever moved ahead of the Aces for seventh in the WNBA standings. Caitlin Clark has not played in the Fever's last four games after suffering a left groin strain. It was the latest in an up-and-down season in which she missed time during the preseason, too. Prior to the Commissioner's Cup victory over the Minnesota Lynx, Stephanie White said Indiana wants to make sure Clark is at her best before returning. 'Making progress and feeling good are two different things,' White said. 'We want to make sure that she feels good. We want to make sure that she's confident. We want to make sure that we're not putting her in a position to have any setbacks. That's the that's the priority right now.' The Fever host the Los Angeles Sparks on Saturday, the Golden State Valkyries on Wednesday, the Atlanta Dream on July 11 and Dallas Wings on July 13. The Fever then go on the road July 15 at the Connecticut Sun and July 16 at the New York Liberty before hosting the WNBA All-Star Game. Buy our book commemorating Caitlin Clark's spectacular rookie season! The Fever again play at Gainbridge Fieldhouse as they host the Los Angeles Sparks at 7 p.m. July 5.
