Delhi govt orders ACB probe into Barapullah Phase-3 project irregularities
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta headed an expenditure finance committee (EFC) meeting along with Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Parvesh Verma, where the decision was taken for an Anti-Corruption Branch probe in the matter.
'The irregularities in the project and the payment of Rs 175 crore to the contractor should be investigated by the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB)," a government statement said.
Gupta further alleged 'corruption" by the previous Aam Aadmi Party government in the matter of delayed completion of the flyover.
According to the government, the elevated road was scheduled for completion in October 2017 but was repeatedly delayed, and eventually the matter went into arbitration.
'The ruling favoured the contractor with an award of Rs 120 crore. When the payment was withheld, the company approached the high court, which in May 2023 ordered the PWD to pay Rs 175 crore, including interest and GST. The sum was subsequently paid during the tenure of then-PWD minister Atishi," the Delhi government said in a statement.
CM Gupta further criticized the AAP government for 'neither filing a review petition nor acting against the responsible officers".
'The contractor had initially offered to settle the dispute for Rs 35 crore, but the proposal was ignored, resulting in the escalation of the matter to the high court. The previous government had prevented the company from executing the work," it added.
There was no immediate reaction available from the AAP to the queries.
'The possibility of PWD officials being complicit in the irregularities and that their actions will be scrutinised under the inquiry," it added.
According to officials, the project, which started in 2015, is currently 87 per cent completed. The original estimated cost of the project was Rs 1,260.63 crore, out of which Rs 1,238.68 crore has been spent so far.
For the financial year 2025–26, Rs 150 crore has been allocated, of which Rs 86.43 crore had been spent by June 2025. PTI SSM NB

South African man arrested with heroin at Mumbai airport gets 15 yrs in jail
A special court sentenced to 15 years in jail a South African national, who was arrested with 3.98 kg of heroin at the Mumbai airport. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 1.5 lakh on the 30-year-old man, who had claimed that he was sent to India with a promise to be given an opportunity for football trials. The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) had claimed that it had received information that a person travelling by flight of Ethiopian Airlines at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, on April 12, 2022, would be carrying contraband in his check-in baggage. The NCB had claimed that while conducting an inspection of a red trolley bag that the accused was carrying, it was found that the flaps of both sides of the bag were modified and covered with cotton cloth. When they were cut open, two plastic packets were found, hidden on both sides. The NCB claimed that the packets had a cream-coloured powder substance and the drug testing kit revealed it to be heroin. The accused's lawyer had said that there was no proof that the bag belonged to him as there was no proof that he had picked it up from the conveyor belt and that it was possible that it was 'planted' on him by the real culprit. The lawyer also submitted that the accused had travelled from Johannesburg to Addis Ababa and from Addis Ababa to Mumbai and his bag would have gone through a strict check but nothing was found. '…the bag was having a baggage tag which is mandatory to be affixed on the baggage and on the boarding pass. The baggage tag affixed on the bag was having details with the name of the accused the flight by which he travelled. In those… there are details of accused No.1. Under such circumstances, the allegations of planting the baggage or foisting the bag upon the accused are not certainly acceptable,' the court said. It also did not accept the accused's contention that proper procedure for search, seizure and analysis of the drug was not followed.

MCD aims to inaugurate multilevel shuttle car parking facility at greater kailash this month
New Delhi: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi plans to inaugurate its multilevel shuttle car parking facility at M Block Market in Greater Kailash I by the month-end. "These trees, located along the periphery of the parking area, need to be removed to create a 6-metre space for the movement of emergency vehicles, in accordance with building norms," said an MCD official. "After clearing the trees, the fire services no-objection will be sought." The facility, constructed at a cost of Rs 63.7 crore, consists of a shuttle or robo parker style parking which involves using automated systems and robots to park and retrieve vehicles. It is space-efficient and convenient. The facility, equipped with four lifts, will be fully automatic with no manual intervention. Built on a 2,240 sqm plot, the parking has the ground floor and eight floors above it, offering space to park 399 cars. While the construction began three years ago, MCD sought permission to fell the trees over a year ago. The civic body received anticipatory approval from the fire service and continued the work. "The footfall at the market is heavy most of the time. It is common to see many vehicles parked on the roadsides, leading to inconvenience to others," said a local resident. "To resolve the problem, construction of the parking lot was taken up on a portion of the surface parking site and work began in March 2022 with an 18-month deadline but it was breached in Sept 2023. " Since the project is taking time to finish, the shop owners have requested opening up space for a few cars to park. The municipal corporation pointed out that stack and puzzle parking lots can accommodate a larger number of vehicles within a compact space compared with other parking types. Moreover, they can be assembled more quickly and developed at a lower cost than conventional parking facilities. In such projects, the concessionaire responsible for constructing the parking lot can operate it for a minimum of one year.
