Andaman to get five-star resorts, yacht marina in tourism overhaul: Chief secy
Talking to PTI, Kumar said the ambitious plan focuses on infrastructure development, heritage promotion, eco-tourism, and sustainable growth.
Emphasising the strategic importance and unique appeal of the islands, he added, "The Andaman and Nicobar archipelago, comprising 836 islands, is a rare blend of natural beauty, historical depth, and adventure tourism. We aim to elevate it to international tourism standards."
Kumar said that under the guidance of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, approvals have been given for the construction of four five-star resorts on select islands, marking a key step towards premium tourism infrastructure.
Additionally, a dedicated yacht marina is in the pipeline, with an Expression of Interest already floated.
"The marina will be instrumental in attracting cruise tourism and private yachts, enhancing the Islands' profile as a luxury destination," Kumar added.
On the heritage front, Kumar said efforts are underway to obtain UNESCO World Heritage Site status for the Cellular Jail, which is already on the tentative list.
"We want visitors to truly connect with the legacy of India's freedom struggle," he added.
To deepen this experience, a tourism circuit is being developed connecting the Cellular Jail, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Island and Viper Island. The circuit will offer light and sound shows, guided tours, and immersive experiences to connect with India's freedom struggle, he added.
Recognising the island's vast coastal potential, accounting for over 25 per cent of India's coastline, the administration is promoting water sports and eco-adventures. Activities like scuba diving, snorkelling, and game fishing are being expanded with strict safety regulations and professional operators, he said.
The Chief Secretary also unveiled plans for astro-tourism, leveraging the region's unpolluted skies.
"Tourism is no longer confined to Swaraj Dweep and Shaheed Dweep. New destinations like Baratang Island, known for its mud volcanoes and limestone caves, are gaining popularity," he said.
The Chief Secretary said skill development programmes are being implemented for local youth to promote employment in tourism, hospitality, fisheries, and support services.
According to the tourism department, the Islands witnessed a significant rise in tourist footfall over the past three years.
In 2022, the archipelago recorded 2,35,061 domestic and 4,461 foreign tourists. In 2023, the numbers rose to 3,23,619 domestic and 9,025 foreign travellers.
The upward trend continued in 2024, with 7,10,397 domestic and 11,497 foreign tourists visiting the islands.
Tour and travel operators anticipate a further surge of over 25 per cent in tourist arrivals in the current year , buoyed by new infrastructure developments and targeted promotion campaigns.

Thai Lion Air plane grounded in Kolkata following technical snag
A Thai Lion Air flight to Bangkok was grounded at the Kolkata airport in the early hours of Saturday after it developed technical glitches, officials said. The flight with 130 passengers and seven crew on board returned to the parking bay from the runway, they said. The Boeing 737-800 aircraft landed at the Kolkata airport around 1.23 am with 151 passengers on board and was supposed to take off at 2.35 am for Bangkok's Don Mueang International Airport (DMK), they said. However, it developed a flap-related problem, following which it returned to the parking bay after pushback and subsequently, the flight had to be cancelled, they added. 'Flaps are very important components of an aircraft. The flaps are extended during take off to produce lift for the aircraft. Similarly, they are extended during landing to create drag to slow down the aircraft,' Sumanta Roy Choudhury, a retired captain who worked in multiple airlines, told PTI. All the passengers were provided with hotel accommodation, an airline official said. The aircraft had to be grounded in Kolkata as the company engineer on board could not solve the technical problem, he said. Two more engineers will be flown in on Saturday night from the airline's base in Bangkok, and they will help in fixing the problem, he added. As a result of this incident, a Qatar Airways plane from Doha to Kolkata got delayed for parking by 25 minutes, an Airports Authority of India official said.

UP to launch Buddhist, Sikh pilgrimage schemes with Rs 10,000 aid per person: CM Yogi Adityanath
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday directed officials to launch two new pilgrimage assistance schemes -- the ' Buddhist Tirtha Darshan Yojana ' and the ' Panch Takht Yatra Yojana ' -- to facilitate spiritual travel for Buddhist and Sikh devotees, the state government said in a statement. In a review meeting, Adityanath said pilgrimages are a means of spiritual upliftment and social harmony, and it is the government's responsibility to assist citizens in reaching places associated with their faith. Under the 'Buddhist Tirtha Darshan Yojana', financial assistance will be provided to Buddhist devotees, especially monks, to visit key pilgrimage sites across India. Similarly, the 'Panch Takht Yatra Yojana' will enable Sikh devotees from Uttar Pradesh to visit the five holy Takht Sahib sites -- Shri Anandpur Sahib, Shri Akal Takht Sahib, Shri Damdama Sahib, Shri Takht Sachkhand Shri Hazur Sahib, and Shri Harmandir Ji Sahib (Patna Sahib). 6,900 Amarnath pilgrims leave Jammu base camp for Kashmir
The fourth batch of 6,979 pilgrims — 5,196 men, 1,427 women, 24 children, 331 sadhus and sadhvis and one transgender — left the Bhagwati Nagar base camp in two separate convoys between 3.30 am and 4.05 am amid tight security, officials said. About 30,000 pilgrims have prayed at the 3,880 metre-high cave shrine since July 3 when the 38-day annual yatra commenced from the twin tracks in Pahalgam in Anantnag district and Baltal in Ganderbal district. While 4,226 pilgrims left in 161 vehicles for Nunwan base camp for the 48-kilometre traditional Pahalgam route, 2,753 pilgrims were headed for the shorter but steeper 14-kilometre Baltal route in 151 vehicles, they said. With the fresh departure, a total of 24,528 pilgrims have left the Jammu base camp for the Valley since Wednesday, when Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha flagged off the yatra from here.
