Eugenio Suárez Rumors? Why Cubs Blockbuster Deal Makes Sense

ESPN's MLB insider, Jeff Passan, recently suggested there was a 90 percent chance the Arizona Diamondbacks will trade slugger Eugenio Suárez ahead of the trade deadline. Passan also listed the Chicago Cubs as one of the best fits for the star infielder.
"Suárez is in a contract year and playing like one of the best players in baseball. Only Cal Raleigh and Aaron Judge have more home runs than his 35. Despite turning 34 years old before the trade deadline, Suárez is sitting near career highs in isolated power and wRC+ (which measures overall offensive performance)," Passan wrote. "His fielding metrics have declined in recent years, but he's still an acceptable defender at third base. Even if the Diamondbacks don't offload all their free agents-to-be, Suárez could be moved because they've got Jordan Lawlar raking in Triple-A and primed to take over at third."

PHOENIX, ARIZONA - JULY 20: Eugenio Suarez #28 of the Arizona Diamondbacks celebrates after hitting a solo home run against the St. Louis Cardinals during the third inning at Chase Field on July 20, 2025 in Phoenix, Arizona. MoreThe Cubs could be the perfect landing spot for Suárez for a few reasons, but there's bound to be a lot of competition on the trade market, notably from the New York Yankees.
The top reason the Cubs could be favored over the Yankees in the potential Suárez sweepstakes is their farm system.
Chicago has a much better farm system than New York, so it would be easier for the front office to acquire Suárez.
Chicago could use a one-year rental third baseman, too. Matt Shaw has struggled this year, but he remains supremely talented. Shaw might not have been ready to be the third baseman of a World Series contender this year, but if Suárez can help the Cubs win a championship in the coming months, Shaw will be primed to take over at the hot corner in 2026.
The Yankees are desperate, so it won't be easy for the Cubs to poach the infielder from the Diamondbacks, but it's a move Chicago needs to make to solidify itself at the top of the league.

Shohei Ohtani homers in fifth consecutive game, tying a Los Angeles Dodgers franchise record
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Shohei Ohtani homered for the fifth consecutive game on Wednesday, tying a Los Angeles Dodgers franchise record. Yankees star Aaron Judge was the last player to homer in five consecutive games, accomplishing that feat last year. Ohtani, who leads the National League with 37 home runs, homered in the first inning off Minnesota Twins starter Chris Paddack. He hit a slow curveball 441 feet to center. He carried the bat midway down the first-base line and then did a bat flip. This is the seventh time in Dodgers history that a player has homered in five consecutive games. Ohtani joins Max Muncy, Joc Pederson, Adrian Gonzalez, Matt Kemp, Shawn Green and Roy Campanella in that club. Ohtani, a three-time MVP, is batting .276 with 70 RBIs. He's also pitched well in six games and is scheduled to throw four innings on Monday in Cincinnati as he is getting close in his buildup as a starter, coming back from his second right UCL repair surgery. With an off day on Thursday, Ohtani's next chance to see if he can homer in six consecutive games will be against the Red Sox in Boston.

Does Breakout Phillies Pitcher Have 'Centerpiece' Value Ahead of Trade Deadline?
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Philadelphia Phillies are one of the best teams in baseball, but they still have quite a few holes to fill on their roster. The team needs to add a closer and an outfielder. Beyond that, depth additions would work, but it's hard to imagine the Phillies leaving the deadline without adding at least one star. But to do that, the team will need to trade some talented prospects. FanSided's Eric Cole recently revealed that he expects the Phillies to cut ties with talented pitching prospect Mick Abel in the coming days. Abel has made six starts this year and holds a 5.04 ERA in 25 innings. PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA - JUNE 21: Mick Abel #40 of the Philadelphia Phillies looks on against the New York Mets at Citizens Bank Park on June 21, 2025 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA - JUNE 21: Mick Abel #40 of the Philadelphia Phillies looks on against the New York Mets at Citizens Bank Park on June 21, 2025 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Mets defeated the Phillies 11-4. More"The Phillies are one again in the middle of the World Series discussion and with Dave Dombrowski at the helm, you can bet they are going to be aggressive," Cole wrote. "It would be extremely odd for Philly to spend all of this time getting Andrew Painter healthy again only to trade him, so Abel may be the odd man out from the pitching-rich Phillies if they make a big move. "They did make a real move to address their bullpen already after signing David Robertson, but Abel could be the centerpiece of a deal for a big-time bullpen arm with some team control or an impact bat." It's hard to imagine there's no future in Philadelphia for a talented pitcher like Abel, but the Phillies seemingly have six pitchers ahead of him. When Aaron Nola finally drops off, top prospect Andrew Painter is expected to take his place. That would leave Abel as a fringe roster player unless there are injuries. Of course, having pitching depth is important, but Abel would be much more valuable if used in a trade. He could be the centerpiece of a deal that lands a star closer for the Phillies.
