Four-star safety and Texas target updates his recruitment with decision coming Friday
One of the Texas Longhorns priority recruits on defense is safety Chace Calicut out of Houston North Shore. The 6-foot-3 DB is the No. 56 player in the nation according to Rivals.com, No. 10 in the state of Texas and the No. 4 safety in the nation. He has narrowed his choices to Texas, Michigan and Georgia.
Calicut was just on the UT campus for an official visit and then flew to Indianapolis to take part in the elite Rivals Five-Star Challenge. There, he spoke with analyst Sam Spiegelman about where he is in the process.
Calicut highlighted his relationship with Longhorns CB coach Mark Orphey, who also went to North Shore, when talking about his recruitment by the Longhorns.
"Mark Orphey came from my hometown school, North Shore. He coached there. He went to school there. He knows exactly how it is to be from Houston North Shore. And he knows how to fit me in with those guys. That's another reason why Texas is up there. It's the same thing with coach Steve Sarkisian. He really gets the players. He's more of a players coach and that's the type of guy I would like to play for." -- Chace Calicut
The talented defensive back says he will make his commitment announcement on Friday, June 27. He tells Rivals his family will have the greatest impact on his decision.

If Texas lands the blue chipper, he'd be the fourth DB committed to the Longhorns in the 2026 class, joining safeties Jake Collett and Yaheim Riley and cornerback Hayward Howard Jr.

While football is his specialty, Sarkisian also highlighted where Texas stands academically. "Name another school who's getting compared to Harvard, Yale, and Princeton, but on the flip side is getting compared to Georgia, Ohio State, and Alabama on the football field," Sarkisian said. While, in the end, Sarkisian's impact will be measured in wins and losses, he did not hold back when expressing his support for the school he calls home. Following this commitment, Georgia now has the No. 3 overall class in 2026, according to On3 Sports. That group is currently headlined by five-star quarterback Jared Curtis and includes a number of highly sought-after players all over the field. While it comes as no surprise to see the Bulldogs near the top of those rankings as they do seemingly every year, that doesn't make it any less impressive. Michigan has been the long-time favorite in his recruitment, but On3's Steve Wiltfong reported that the Longhorns were "closing the gap" as of late. Unfortunately it wasn't enough as Lee announced his commitment to the Wolverines on Friday. He chose Michigan over Texas, Alabama, and Georgia. Advertisement The Honolulu native is ranked the No. 10 offensive tackle in the nation and the No. 2 overall prospect in Hawaii, according to 247Sports composite. Lee took an official visit to Texas on June 6 while Michigan received his final official visit on June 20. As it stands now, the Longhorns have two offensive line commits for the 2026 class in three-star offensive tackle Max Wright and three-star interior offensive lineman Nicolas Robertson.
