Another major commit coming? Alabama among finalists for elite 2026 in-state edge rusher

USA Today7 hours ago
A program with an extensive amount of momentum on the recruiting trail at the moment, could yet another major commitment be coming for the Alabama Crimson Tide?
Yes, on Thursday afternoon, Alabama was named among the finalists for another one of the nation's elite recruits, this time coming from in-state in highly-touted edge rusher Anthony "Tank" Jones.
Per a report from Rivals' Hayes Fawcett, Jones has narrowed down his list of finalists to three, listing the Crimson Tide alongside both Oregon and Texas A&M.
According to the 247Sports Composite recruiting rankings, Jones is currently considered as the nation's No. 16 overall prospect in the 2026 class, as well as the No. 3 edge rusher nationally. A five-star prospect, Jones is also ranked as the No. 2 overall player in the state of Alabama where he attends St. Paul's Episcopal School.
Alabama's 2026 class currently ranks No. 6 nationally, according to the 247Sports Team Rankings, with 17 total commitments, three of which are five-star prospects. The most recent of those came this past Wednesday when wide receiver Cederian Morgan committed to the Crimson Tide.

Ohio defensive tackle product originally committed to Florida flips to Ohio State

BREAKING: Class of 2026 DL Jamir 'JJ' Perez has Flipped his Commitment from Florida to Ohio State, he tells me for @rivalsThe 6'4 350 DL from Cleveland, OH had been Committed to the Gators since May'The best in Ohio stay in Ohio' It's the way we thought it would go along. Three-star Cleveland Glenville defensive tackle Jamir Perez has flipped his commitment from the Florida Gators to Ohio State, a place that is a pipeline for the Tarblooders and a destination most felt he would end up in the first place. Instead, Perez shocked everyone by deciding to head south to Gainesville when he committed back in mid-May. Despite the early word, Larry Johnson and gang never gave up on the Ohio native, and rumblings began to surface that Perez was leaning towards flipping, and that's exactly what happened on Friday when the announcement was made on social media. The 6-foot, 4-inch, 360-pounder is a mountain of a prospect and a true nose tackle that could develop into something very special for Ohio State despite having just a 3-star status. Currently, he is ranked as the No. 74 defensive lineman and 679th overall prospect in the 2026 recruiting class according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. His commitment gives Ohio State 20 for the class as it looks to put the finishing touches heading into the fall and toward the Early Signing Period in December. There has been a lot of news with Ohio State football recruiting lately, and it's been a mixed bag with some good news and plenty of not-so-good news. We'll continue to keep an eye on what's happening on the banks of the Olentangy when it comes to luring prospects to play in the Scarlet and Gray. Michigan football boosts 2026 class with 4-star WR Travis Johnson from Virginia

Michigan football recruiting is red hot, and the Wolverines have shown little sign of slowing down -- only in the way that the class is filling up. The maize and blue already have two wide receivers committed in Dallas (Tx.) Episcopal three-star Jaylen Pile and Mansfield (Tx.) four-star Zion Robinson. But the Wolverines are looking to add at least one more, if not two. While top target Miami (Fla.) Northwestern five-star Calvin Russell will make his decision on Saturday evening, another that Michigan football has been after for some time decides on Independence Day in Chesapeake (Va.) Oscar Smith four-star wideout Travis Johnson. At 6-foot-3, 180 pounds, Johnson has offers from the likes of Penn State, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Miami, and others. But on Friday, he committed to the Wolverines. Scouting report and highlights Here's the scouting report from 247Sports' Andrew Ivins: Well-rounded wide receiver with the size, speed and focus to emerge as a trusted option at the Power Four level. Height and bounce suggest that he's destined to play on the outside, but is sudden and quick enough to win from an interior alignment with his slick route running. Attacks cushion with good surge off the line and can reach a top gear before changing course with full-tilt cuts. Might not be a true power forward at the catch point, but can play above shoulder pads with his timing and body control. Will shed a tackle or two with the ball in his hands and has surprising agility in tight quarters for someone of his stature. Missed time as a junior due to injury, but still finished the season with over 1,000 receiving yards before turning heads at the OT7 Finals summer before senior year. Rather narrow in the shoulders for a pass catcher that's verified at over 6-foot-3, but projects as a potential impact player on Saturdays that will work for his quarterbacks. Mature game could have him in the lineup sooner rather than later. And here are his junior highlights: The currently committed class Here is what the 2026 class looks like now that Johnson is in the fold: All rankings by the 247Sports Composite With Johnson in the fold, Michigan football moves back up to No. 7 from No. 9, surpassing Clemson and Miami, while being behind USC, Georgia, Notre Dame, Texas A&M, Ohio State, and Alabama in the 247Sports team rankings.

Independence Day: America's Team Cowboys must secede from predictable offensive tendencies

Predictability can be an NFL offense's worst enemy. In today's game, deception is almost as important as the talent on the field. If opposing teams what to expect before the snap, then they are smart enough to know how to beat it. While this applies to both sides of the ball, it is one of the many changes Cowboys fans hope to see implemented from new head coach Brian Schottenheimer in 2025. When it comes to their offensive tendencies, Dallas needs to declare independence from transparency. It's one of few advantages of having a first-time head coach at the helm — no one knows exactly what to expect. Even though Schottenheimer has been in Dallas for two years, he's been stuck in a supportive role behind Mike McCarthy. With McCarthy now out to pasture and Schottenheimer seizing the play caller role, it's anyone's guess what an unbridled Schottenheimer offense looks like. And that's a good thing. Opponents likely expect a run-heavy offense with ample inside-zone running concepts and a play-action-rich passing game as a complementary force. But Schottenheimer, and his newly hired offensive coordinator Klayton Adams, are well-versed in a wide range of concepts that will no doubt be put to use in 2025. The new head coach has discussed his desire to run multiple personnel groups in variety of ways this season. Using versatile players in different alignments and formations can stress a defense, prompting misjudgments and mismatches for his offense to take advantage of. Running passing plays and rushing plays out of identical looks is something Kyle Shanahan has made famous in his brand of offense, and it's something Schottenheimer appears to be aiming for in 2025. To what degree everything is applied is anyone's guess. Schottenheimer has dropped nuggets of information but has been strategically vague as to the degree and breadth of these concepts on his ideal offense. It makes for an exciting and unpredictable attack in 2025 and, with any luck, will keep opponents guessing into the postseason.
