Beggar with Dhs14,000 in his possession arrested in Sharjah
"Begging is a negative phenomenon that poses a security and social challenge, as beggars exploit the sympathy of the public to make illicit gains as fast as possible," said Brigadier General Omer Al Ghazal Al Shamsi, Director of Special Tasks Department, who is also head of control committee for beggars and street vendors.
"Cases where beggars were involved included an Arab, who, based on a report by a member of the society, was arrested while he was begging from worshippers near a mosque, alleging he was facing a financial hardship," Al Shamsi said.
A police patrol rushed to the scene and arrested him to find that he was staying illegally in the country and had Dhs14,000 in his possession, he added, noting that on interrogation, he was found to have collected the amount in only three days of begging.
Al Shamsi pointed out that through their awareness campaign launched at the beginning of the Holy Month of Ramadan under the title 'Begging is a crime and giving is a responsibility,' Sharjah Police were exerting relentless efforts to combat this phenomenon.
They were doing so by intensifying military and civilian patrols to apprehend beggars and street vendors, some of whom turned begging into a seasonal profession, particularly during the holy month, he said.
Sharjah Police are calling on the public not to respond to beggars and to report any begging case by calling the toll-free number 80040 or via the call centre 901.

Sharjah Police has dismantled a drug trafficking syndicate operating from Canada to Spain and into the UAE, following a major cross-border operation. A total of 131 kilograms of narcotics and psychoactive substances and nearly 9,945 capsules of controlled medication were seized, while seven suspects were arrested in the UAE, according to WAM. Authorities uncovered a drug trafficking route that began at the Port of Toronto in Canada, passed through Malaga in Spain, and ended at a port in the UAE. They began their investigation after noticing an Arab man, among the arrested, frequently entering the UAE with his wife and children. Surveillance and strategic ambushes led to the discovery of the group's operations and the arrest of the main suspect and his local contacts. Police revealed that the primary suspect used his wife and two children as cover for his illegal activities. He admitted to his role in the operation and said he used 'geo-location drops,' a method of hiding drugs in specific areas for pickup, to distribute the narcotics. Five other suspects, all of Asian nationality, were also arrested after evidence showed they were involved in receiving and distributing the drugs. The seized shipment, found hidden in a container filled with car spare parts, was linked to one of the suspects by name. The suspects are now in the custody of judicial authorities in the UAE. The Ministry of Interior, working closely with international partners, is continuing efforts to track down other members of the syndicate overseas and is taking legal action to break up the network completely, WAM said.

Sharjah Police helped reassure a 7-year-old boy after a traffic incident left him in a state of extreme fear. Authorities responded quickly to his mother's report, which stated that the child refused to leave the house due to his mental state.
