Taylor Swift wins recording artist of the year crown for fifth time

MTV Lebanon19-02-2025

Taylor Swift has been named global recording artist of the year for 2024 by the IFPI, the fifth time she has won the honour from the organisation that represents the recorded music industry.
The megastar's "The Tortured Poets Department" record also topped four IFPI charts - global album, global vinyl album, global streaming album and global album sales, the IFPI said in a statement on Tuesday.
It had a strong lead on the 2024 global album sales chart, which calculates physical purchases and full album downloads, with 5.6 million units. K-pop group ENHYPEN's "Romance: Untold" took the second spot with 3.4 million units sold.
Swift's record-breaking "Eras" tour, the first to surpass $1 billion in revenue, also boosted interest in her past records, with several appearing in the 2024 vinyl album and streaming album charts, the IFPI said.
"This has been a huge year for Taylor, and it has been incredible to see the extent to which fans all over the world are connecting with her superb catalogue of music," IFPI Chief Executive Victoria Oakley said.
Swift was first named IFPI global recording artist of the year in 2014 and then in 2019, 2022 and 2023, the most times for any performer since the award was introduced 12 years ago.
Presented to whoever tops the IFPI global artist chart, the prize is calculated by looking at an artist's or group's worldwide sales for streaming, download and physical music formats during the calendar year and covers their whole body of work, according to the organisation.
Canadian rapper Drake and K-pop group SEVENTEEN came in second and third respectively on that chart for 2024.

All 7 BTS members are now done with mandatory service

by Naharnet Newsdesk 20 June 2025, 15:05 Suga, a rapper and songwriter in the global K-pop sensation BTS, has been discharged from South Korea's mandatory military service, marking the official return of all seven members from their enlistment duties. The label confirmed that Suga completed his alternative service duties on Wednesday after using up his remaining leave. His official discharge date is Saturday. BTS' management agency, Big Hit Entertainment, had said earlier that no events were planned for Suga's release out of concern for overcrowding. It is a momentous occasion for fans of the K-pop group BTS. The seven singers of the popular K-pop band plan to reunite as a group sometime in 2025 now that they've finished their service. Last week, BTS superstars RM and V were discharged from South Korea's military after fulfilling their mandatory service. Jimin and Jung Kook were discharged a day later. All four were enlisted in December 2023. Six of the group's seven members served in the army, while Suga fulfilled his duty as a social service agent, an alternative form of military service. Jin, the oldest BTS member, was discharged in June 2024. J-Hope was discharged in October. In South Korea, all able-bodied men aged 18 to 28 are required by law to perform 18-21 months of military service under a conscription system meant to deter aggression from rival North Korea. The law gives special exemptions to athletes, classical and traditional musicians, and ballet and other dancers if they have obtained top prizes in certain competitions and are assessed to have enhanced national prestige. K-pop stars and other entertainers aren't subject to such privileges. However, in 2020, BTS postponed their service until age 30 after South Korea's National Assembly revised its Military Service Act, allowing K-pop stars to delay their enlistment until age 30. There was heated public debate in 2022 over whether to offer special exemptions of mandatory military service for BTS members, until the group's management agency announced in October 2022 that all seven members would fulfill their duties.

Swift and Kelce attend Game 4 of Stanley Cup Final

by Naharnet Newsdesk 13 June 2025, 16:19 There was bad blood at Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final between the Edmonton Oilers and Florida Panthers. Not just on the ice. Pop superstar Taylor Swift and boyfriend Travis Kelce were among the celebrities that flocked to Amerant Bank Arena on Thursday to watch Game 4 of the final — with the "Bad Blood" singer seen holding hands with Kelce as they headed to their seats. And they were in attendance for a thrilling game. Edmonton came from down three goals in the first period to win it 5-4 in overtime, tying the series 2-2. Kelce, a Super Bowl-winning tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs, is a known hockey fan along with his brother Jason Kelce. And ever since Swift and Kelce began their high-profile romance in 2023, the 14-time Grammy Award winning singer has been known to pop in on big sporting events — including the last two Super Bowls — and cause an excited frenzy for fans. There were rumblings ahead of Thursday's game that the couple might attend the final. A helicopter landed near Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise, Florida, ahead of the game. The VIP entrance to the area was also closed off and the media elevator was not available to be used for a period of time before pregame warmups began. The pair was shown on the television broadcast during the first period of the game. Swift recently announced that she regained control over her entire body of work. In a lengthy note posted to her official website, Swift said that all the music she's ever made now belongs to her after she has purchased her catalog of recordings — originally released through Big Machine Records — from their most recent owner, the private equity firm Shamrock Capital. Over the last few years, Swift has been rerecording and releasing her early albums in an attempt to regain control of her music. Other celebs in attendance included former Miami Dolphins star defensive end Jason Taylor, who banged the drum before the game, and hockey great Jaromir Jagr. Miami Heat captain Bam Adebayo was joined by former Heat captain Udonis Haslem on the drum on Monday.

Billie Eilish wins big at American Music Awards 2025

Pop singer Billie Eilish claimed the artist prize over Taylor Swift, Kendrick Lamar, Morgan Wallen and other nominees of the American Music Awards. She won all seven categories in which she was nominated, including album of the year and favourite touring artist. 'This is so crazy. I feel speechless,' Eilish said in a video message from Europe, where she is on tour. 'I wish I could be there tonight.' Eilish, 23, released her third studio album, 'Hit Me Hard and Soft', in May 2024. 'That's So True' singer Gracie Abrams, winner of the new artist of the year, also sent a recording to accept her honour. She thanked her fans, whom she said, 'I have been lucky enough to learn from.' 'They have reminded me of the light that exists out there,' Abrams said. SZA took home AMA accolades for female R&B artist and for R&B song for 'Saturn'. Becky G was named the favourite female Latin artist. Many big names on the nominees' list did not attend the show, which was broadcast live on CBS from the Fontainebleau Las Vegas hotel. One absentee was Beyonce, who claimed favourite female country artist and favourite country album for 'Cowboy Carter', her first AMA wins in country categories. Post Malone was named the favourite male country artist. Other no-shows included Taylor Swift and Kendrick Lamar. Lamar went into the ceremony with a leading 10 nominations. He earned one award, favorite hip-hop song, for 'Not Like Us'. The festivities opened with host Jennifer Lopez singing and dancing to a six-minute medley of 23 hits by the nominees. The songs included Eilish's 'Birds of a Feather', Sabrina Carpenter's 'Espresso' and Beyonce's 'Texas Hold 'Em'. Janet Jackson was honoured with the Icon award, a tribute to artists with global influence. 'I don't consider myself an icon,' Jackson said on stage. 'The one thing that I hope for is that I'm an inspiration for others to follow their dreams and succeed.' Eighty-year-old Rod Stewart received a lifetime achievement honour and danced and sang to his pop hit 'Forever Young', which was released in 1984. Stewart said that when he started his career, 'I had this burning ambition to sing.' 'That's all I wanted to do. I didn't want to be rich or famous,' he said.
