Bills Caution James Cook To Not 'Get Caught Off-Guard' Amid Contract Dispute
Buffalo Bills running back James Cook is a two-time Pro Bowler, has two 1,000-yard seasons, and tied the franchise record last year for touchdowns in a season (16), yet he still isn't the finished product.

Of course, no player is, even Patrick Mahomes, has flaws, but players work on them during the offseason, so by the time the regular season rolls around, maybe they aren't as noticeable.
For Cook, his ability as a runner is well-documented, but as we know, part of a running back's duties is also to pass protect, and when you have Josh Allen in front of you, allowing him time to dissect the defense is crucial.
And for Bills running back coach Kelly Skipper, pass protection is an area James needs to improve.
"The thing about it is we got a couple different backs, situations, different things that happen," Skipper said via ESPN. "The thing he's got to concentrate is his whole game, the run and the pass. Being able to pass block because he can do it, you know what I mean? It's just how many times and just being ready and don't get caught off guard."

Is that advice tied to Cook's contract dispute? In a sense. "Be better'' is one way to get a payday, for one thing.

The offensive line helped with that last season as Allen was only sacked 14 times, a career-low, but Cook also played his role, helping pick up blitzes and allowing Allen to do his thing.
However, it appears that it still needs work, according to Skipper, and if James participates in training camp, we imagine that will be something that gets addressed.
Of course - and here's the second reason this advice is tied to the negotiations - James and his contract situation might prevent that, at least in the first week or so, but Cook, while seen as a rising star, still has a couple of rough spots in his game that need to be ironed out.

As the Buffalo Bills prepare for the 2025 NFL season, we'll take a look at the most important contributors on their roster. They have a ton of cornerstone players who will be returning for another shot at bringing a Lombardi Trophy to Buffalo, and they'll have help from some new additions as well. Background Position: LB Age at start of season: 24 Experience: Third year 2025 cap hit: $1,468,038 2024 recap In his sophomore season in the NFL, Dorian Williams stepped up when called upon. In the absence of fellow linebacker Matt Milano, Williams started 11 games and recorded a team-leading 117 tackles to go with five tackles for loss, one forced fumble, and three fumble recoveries. He was able to hold down the fort in the middle of the field until Milano was ready to return, specifically excelling in playing downhill and tackling ball carriers. He was also a big contributor on special teams. 2025 outlook Williams is once again in line to be the top reserve linebacker on the Bills squad. Biggest question: How much time will he see on defense? Williams started to see more snaps as part of three-linebacker sets later in the year, but his playing time will most likely hinge on the availability of the LBs ahead of him. While he is in line to be a big help on special teams, he has more to offer than that. Unfortunately, if he's out there on defense and playing well like he did last year, that would most likely mean injuries have hit. The Buffalo Bills are moving into their next major offseason phase in due time: Training camp. The Bills will kick off their 2025 training camp on July 23 at St. John Fisher University. As with every offseason, Bills Wire will examine each position group ahead of this pivotal time on the football calendar. Advertisement Our 2025 safety preview can be found below: At the top Bills defensive back Taylor Rapp. The Bills have valued safeties who can play a hybrid type of safety: one who can complete the duties of either a free safety or strong safety on any given play. This helps with disguising coverages. Players may perform most of their snaps from one spot, but the staff emphasizes versatility nonetheless. At this point, Taylor Rapp and Demar Hamlin have the inside track at the top of the depth chart. Each player started 14 games last year. Hamlin registered 89 total tackles and two interceptions, while Rapped totaled 82 tackles and two interceptions. Many preseason pundits linked the Bills to the safety position ahead of the NFL Draft. There was a concern that the position could use an upgrade. In the end, the Bills brass primarily stayed with the status quo. Still, there's some worry that the unit will have enough athleticism to hang with some of the faster receivers in the game. In addition, their depth is questionable. The hope is that this group will use their game intelligence to keep things under control in the back end.
