Hollyoaks star talks major change to soap and teases Clare and Mercedes twist
One Hollyoaks icon has nothing but praise for loyal fans of the Channel 4 soap, after a surge in support and "noise" since some big changes were made.
Actress Jennifer Metcalfe told The Mirror how in the past year or so, she's noticed more support than ever from viewers, amid some massive storylines. The soap made some big changes in the past year, from cast and crew cuts to dropping episodes and being heavily digital.
During what was a no doubt worrying time for the cast and crew, the show has delivered some huge plots and episodes - some of which earned them some awards at the British Soap Awards just last month. Mercedes McQueen took centre stage in a cancer storyline that aired some of the most moving and important scenes ever to be shown on the soap.
Now, actress Jennifer has shared her reaction to the support for her and her storyline, but also for Hollyoaks overall. She confessed that over the past decade or just under, it felt to those on the show that the buzz around the soap had died down, and perhaps people weren't as interested in the soap anymore.
But since the transformation, the cast have been overwhelmed with the constant hype and online support for the characters and the episodes. Jennifer also said fans messaging her over Mercedes' health battle has "been amazing".
She shared: "It has been amazing, honestly. There has been more noice around this show this year than in the past eight years. The feeling amongst us over the last few years was that maybe people didn't care as much."
"Since Hannah Cheers [Executive Producer] has done the big turn around there has been such massive support." Jennifer also teased the big 30th episodes, while she couldn't give much away as much of it was being kept under wraps for now.
What she did say though as that some changes had been made to plans, while she's also suspicious over a sudden flurry of scenes with one character in particular. She said: "Me and Anya Lawrence [who plays Vicky Grant] have had random scenes together that we never get."
As Anya told us and Jennifer: "We never normally have this there's been some nice surprises in the scripts," Jennifer added: "We don't know if that's something coming up for the big 30th or not.
"I say don't tell me cos I am a blabbermouth so I say don't tell me the storylines. But I don't know yet what's happening with it, I've heard they've changed their minds a few times but that's all they are telling us."
The actress also promised more scenes with long-time rival and returning character Clare Devine. She promised Mercedes and Clare would be back with the fiery showdowns, but she also teased something unexpected would happen for them.
Of her co-star Gemma Bissix she told us: "She's a force to be reckoned with on and off screen. The energy she brings to the building it's beautiful. The character is so iconic. There's always a decent clash with her and Mercedes.
"But they do find some middle ground, something they can both kind of bond over this time, even if half of it is a lie. You get that softness out of the two characters. With Mercedes and Clare we see a softer side to their relationship dare I say, and fiery stuff as well."
Hollyoaks is available to stream on Channel 4's streaming service now, while it also airs Mondays to Wednesdays on E4 at 7PM. * Follow Mirror Celebs and TV on TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Threads.

Noel and Liam Gallagher make last-minute Oasis change hours before reunion tour
The line-up in the first printing of the Oasis programme named a female singer, but she wont be on stage after all following a last-minute change hours before they're due on stage Oasis have had a very last minute change to their line up - with a member of the band named in the tour programme no longer heading out on the road. The Mirror reported yesterday how the main Oasis line up was as expected with Liam Gallagher as the frontman and Noel Gallagher on guitar alongside close pals and regulars Paul 'Bonehead' Arthurs, Gem Archer and Andy Bell. The new drummer is Joey Waronker, who performed with Liam Gallagher and John Squire last year on a tour. But in the tour programme there is also a list of additional musicians playing with the band and they are; Christian Madden on keyboards, Jess Greenfield on backing vocals, Alastair White on trombone, Steve Hamilton on saxophone and Joe Auckland will be playing the trumpet. Jess would have been a rare female member of the group but the Mirror understands she will no longer be on stage. A source close to the band said she was only listed in the earlier drafts of the programme and will not be going on tour. 'The band are not using backing singers anymore. Noel has worked loads with Jess in the past but after final rehearsals were done and the set list was drawn up it made more sense for Noel to do the backing vocals for Liam on the songs. It's a shame for Jess but it's likely there will be other opportunities for her with Noel in the future. They just didn't need her in the end." In February on the podcast Behind The Curtain Jess was asked about the Oasis reunion and said: 'I found out pretty much when everyone else did. I'd heard rumours and then I heard for definite two days before through someone else. Yeah It was definitely a shock. Oasis have released new tickets for UK tour - how to buy yours if you missed out 'I'd love to go. Hopefully Wembley cos it is Wembley. It's amazing and the last time they performed those songs properly was in the Nineties when I was a teenager and I didn't go to the gigs back in the day. 'So it will be nice to see it as an adult. I'm really looking forward to it.' Trumpet player Joe Auckland, saxophonist Steve Hamilton and Trombonist Alastair White have also worked with Noel in his band The High Flying Birds, whilst Christian Madden plays keyboard with Liam. The programme also lists Bonehead as playing both guitar and piano on tour. Noel and Liam will walk on stage for the first time together in public today, since the band split nearly two decades ago in Cardiff today. There will also be dates in Manchester, London and Dublin as part of the tour. The band are thought to have rehearsed in the stadium this week although Liam has played down the suggestion when people were asking him about certain songs in the setlist. Fans began to queue to go into the stadium last night, with the earliest people there getting their tickets upgraded to VIP status. The band will finally take to the stage tonight, having split in August 2009. In a video to promote the comeback last year, Liam was heard saying: "When we both come together, you have greatness." Noel then says: "I know my brother better than anybody else. This is it, this is happening."

The Espresso star is set to release her seventh studio album, titled Man's Best Friend, in late August, following the monumental success of her previous 2024 effort, Short 'n' Sweet. The forthcoming album's lead single, Manchild, was initially rumoured to be about ex-boyfriend, and Saltburn actor, Barry Keoghan, though Carpenter has since dismissed this, claiming to have written the song during the pair's relationship. "I wrote Manchild on a random Tuesday with Amy and Jack not too long after finishing Short n' Sweet and it ended up being the best random Tuesday of my life," she posted on Instagram. "Not only was it so fun to write, but this song became something I can look back on that will score the mental montage to the very confusing and fun young adult years of life.
