Hollyoaks anniversary scripts rewritten as ideas scrapped and 'surprises' ahead
More than one Hollyoaks star told us bosses had made a number of changes to plans for the Channel 4 soap's 30th anniversary episodes, with scripts redone and storylines altered Cast of Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks have been kept in the dark about most of the soap's 30th anniversary plans, with many of the ideas apparently "rewritten" as the show goes all out for the big event. According to more than one star of the soap, bosses have "gone back to the drawing board" and made a few changes to original plans. The show celebrates 30 years on air in October, with planning underway for an unmissable set of episodes. While one star of the show promised "shocking twists" and "big" scenes ahead, another cast member spilled that plans had been changed a couple of times, with bosses wanting to go all out to make the 30th a huge one for fans. According to the star, scripts have been edited, with the suggestion that ideas had been scrapped to make way for bigger and better twists and turns ahead. Another cast member backed the changes to the plans originally laid out, claiming she'd been told that the plans for the anniversary had "changed a few times". But it seems the plans are now all, if not mostly, set in stone with cast soon to find out exactly what is in store for them in the coming months. Speaking exclusively to The Mirror, Mercedes McQueen actress Jennifer Metcalfe was the first star to admit there'd been some changes where the 30th plans were concerned. She told us that she'd heard behind the scenes how plans had been changed more than once. She teased: "I say don't tell me cos I am a blabbermouth so I say don't tell me the storylines. But I don't know yet what's happening with it, I've heard they've changed their minds a few times but that's all they are telling us." Rex Gallagher actor Jonny Labey also said about the script and plan changes, telling us: "For the 30th it was announced there would be some fan involvement! To be honest we have had a lot of script editing and it's been back to the drawing board with some of the ideas. "But it's all solidified now, the ideas are in place. We have got some time until October. The next couple of months we will start knowing a bit more and preparing for the 30th. "They are always gonna go big and the way the storylines are going at the moment, they are really powerful stuff, beautiful stuff, and amazing work from everyone, so it's on good trajectory. The 30th is a big year!" Myra McQueen actress Nicole Barber-Lane didn't know too much, but she's thrilled to be back with the show and for the soap to still be on air 30 years on from the launch. She said: "I don't know what is gonna be happening, but it is important to celebrate how long we have been here. "Sometimes we put so much pressure on stuff but it doesn't need it. I don't know details but I know Hannah [Cheers, Hollyoaks' Executive Producer] has some big stuff lined up." We also got some big spoilers from Lucas Hay actor Oscar Curtis and Dillon Ray actor Nathaniel Dass about what fans can expect. Oscar spilled: "We can't say what happens but we can say it's gonna be exciting." Nate then told us: "Listen, we hear things in and around the building. We hear some amazing stuff, and there is some really amazing stuff in store for Hollyoaks fans. "I think something that happens is gonna actually be quite shocking. It is something to do with the show itself and to do with the characters. There is some really exciting stuff coming up, but we can't say what. "I can promise you there's gonna be some big surprises." Oscar added: "It's the 30th... you know what I mean?" Nate then teased: "I know for a fact the top dogs have some amazing stuff planned." Tom Cunningham actor Ellis Hollins shared his surprise with us that his return storyline is linked to an upcoming storyline before the 30th, and not the big event itself like he thought. He explained: "When I got the call I was assuming it was something to do with the 30th, but it's still quite premature. "So I'm hoping there's gonna be something related to it but maybe on the sidelines, like reacting to certain people and not being in a crash!" Hollyoaks favourite Jennifer Metcalfe told The Mirror all about a huge change she's noticed to the soap and the support from fans, as she teased an unexpected Clare and Mercedes twist One Hollyoaks icon has nothing but praise for loyal fans of the Channel 4 soap, after a surge in support and "noise" since some big changes were made. Actress Jennifer Metcalfe told The Mirror how in the past year or so, she's noticed more support than ever from viewers, amid some massive storylines. The soap made some big changes in the past year, from cast and crew cuts to dropping episodes and being heavily digital. During what was a no doubt worrying time for the cast and crew, the show has delivered some huge plots and episodes - some of which earned them some awards at the British Soap Awards just last month. Mercedes McQueen took centre stage in a cancer storyline that aired some of the most moving and important scenes ever to be shown on the soap. Now, actress Jennifer has shared her reaction to the support for her and her storyline, but also for Hollyoaks overall. She confessed that over the past decade or just under, it felt to those on the show that the buzz around the soap had died down, and perhaps people weren't as interested in the soap anymore. But since the transformation, the cast have been overwhelmed with the constant hype and online support for the characters and the episodes. Jennifer also said fans messaging her over Mercedes' health battle has "been amazing". She shared: "It has been amazing, honestly. There has been more noice around this show this year than in the past eight years. The feeling amongst us over the last few years was that maybe people didn't care as much." "Since Hannah Cheers [Executive Producer] has done the big turn around there has been such massive support." Jennifer also teased the big 30th episodes, while she couldn't give much away as much of it was being kept under wraps for now. What she did say though as that some changes had been made to plans, while she's also suspicious over a sudden flurry of scenes with one character in particular. She said: "Me and Anya Lawrence [who plays Vicky Grant] have had random scenes together that we never get." As Anya told us and Jennifer: "We never normally have this there's been some nice surprises in the scripts," Jennifer added: "We don't know if that's something coming up for the big 30th or not. "I say don't tell me cos I am a blabbermouth so I say don't tell me the storylines. But I don't know yet what's happening with it, I've heard they've changed their minds a few times but that's all they are telling us." The actress also promised more scenes with long-time rival and returning character Clare Devine. She promised Mercedes and Clare would be back with the fiery showdowns, but she also teased something unexpected would happen for them. Of her co-star Gemma Bissix she told us: "She's a force to be reckoned with on and off screen. The energy she brings to the building it's beautiful. The character is so iconic. There's always a decent clash with her and Mercedes. "But they do find some middle ground, something they can both kind of bond over this time, even if half of it is a lie. You get that softness out of the two characters. With Mercedes and Clare we see a softer side to their relationship dare I say, and fiery stuff as well." Jennifer Metcalfe put on a sporty display as she headed out for a walk in Cheshire with her rarely seen boyfriend on Friday. The Hollyoaks actress, 41, who was first spotted with Josh in December 2023, wore a pair of brown fitted leggings. Hollyoaks lands star of rival soap as re-cast killer
A major Waterloo Road star is set join join Channel 4's Hollyoaks recast as troubled teen Bobby Costello. Zak Sutcliffe, who is known for playing bullying Schuey Weever in Waterloo Road, has been confirmed to be joining the village as an exciting recast of Hollyoaks fan fave Mercedes' (Jennifer Metcalfe) son Bobby Costello. Bobby's character has been on and off our screens since his birth in 2011, but with a new actor stepping into the role and the promise of some gritty storylines, maybe Bobby is ready to cause trouble in the village for the foreseeable future. We haven't seen Bobby since his dramatic exit in 2023 after his explosive storyline where he was responsible for the deaths of Silas Blissett(Jeff Rawle), Sylver McQueen (David Tag), Verity Hutchinson(Eva O'Hara) and also very nearly DeMarcus Westwood(Tomi Ade). Zak, who's thrilled to be sinking his teeth into this new role, said: 'I'm having a lot of fun with my time on Hollyoaks so far. It's exciting to get into something gritty and complex.' This isn't the first time Hollyoaks has recast a major role, but bringing back a killer character in a new form is sure to spark debates amongst fans. With the McQueen family still reeling from past traumas, Bobby's reappearance is destined to shake up the village.
