TimesofIndia.com in Birmingham: All-rounder duo of Nitish Kumar Reddy and

It could well mean India will drop a specialist batter and will go with three all-rounders at No 6, 7, 8.

On Tuesday, Team India's assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate hinted at inclusion of Reddy and Washington.

"On Nitish is very close to getting a game. Obviously, he was fantastic in Australia. Coming into the team and playing the way he did," ten Doeschate said on Reddy.
"We just felt on balance for the last game, we wanted to go with the bowling all-rounder, which we thought Shardul was slightly ahead on the bowling front.
"We're looking at ways of rejigging the puzzle so we can get a batting all-rounder in. And obviously, Nitish is our premium batting all-rounder at the moment. So I would say it's a very good chance to play this Test," he added.

Should India include both Nitish Kumar Reddy and Washington Sundar in the Edgbaston Test?
Yes, they should both play. No, one should be dropped.
Ten Doeschate, too had spoken about playing two spinners and having a batting depth in the lower-middle order, pointing towards Washington's ability to bat.
"All three spinners are bowling very nicely, while Washi is batting very nicely.
So it is just about what combination.
"Do we go with an all-rounder spinner or a spinner? Then obviously you have to play the bowling all-rounder. So there's so many different variables.
"The wicket's got 11mm grass on the pitch at the moment but it is quite dry underneath but there's also rain forecast for Wednesday.
So again, we are trying to weigh the two options attacking-wise. But I'm pretty sure two spinners will play in this Test match."

Meanwhile, on the eve of the second Test between India and England, Team India captain Shubman Gill made it clear that India will go with two spinners, citing the dry condition and hot weather in Birmingham.
'In the previous match, if we had had an extra spinner in the fourth innings, the game could have been better,' Gill told reporters.
Shubman Gill press conference: Playing XI almost final, time of Jasprit Bumrah call and more
'There were some patches in the wicket that could have been exploited. Whenever Jaddu (Ravindra Jadeja) bhai was bowling, chances were being created," he said.
"I guess you would want batting depth till No. 7... and if your No. 8 can bat a little bit. If you are going till No. 9, it is difficult to take 20 wickets. If we are able to go with four or five premier bowlers and have our batting till No. 7 or 8, it would be a good combination," he added.

Shubman Gill hit on forehead in IND vs ENG 2nd Test, Rishabh Pant's brotherly love wins hearts

Shubman Gill got an injury scare after the Indian captain was hit on the forehead on Day 2 of the ongoing second Test against England at Edgbaston in Birmingham. Gill, who scored his maiden double hundred in Tests the previous day, looked in pain and was immediately attended by the BCCI medical team on the ground. The incident occurred after lunch in an over bowled by Ravindra Jadeja with Harry Brook batting. The England batter drove powerfully with the ball racing to Gill at the first slip at a rapid pace. The Indian captain got a very little time to react. In the process, the ball missed Gill's hand and hit on his forehead. The 25-year-old looked in immense pain. Vice-captain Rishabh Pant, who was standing just beside him, was the first to check on his captain and asked the physio to enter the field for treatment. Gill was treated on the field immediately and resumed fielding shortly after. As far as the match is concerned, Harry Brook and Jamie Smith hit respective centuries to revive England after the hosts were five wickets down with just 84 runs on board. Having started the day at 77/3, England lost Joe Root and captain Ben Stokes of successive deliveries. However, it was the unbeaten 271-run stand for the sixth wicket between Smith and Brook that resurrected the English innings. At Tea, England were 355/5. Smith was at 157 not out and Brook unbeaten on 140. When Smith came in, England were over 500 runs behind.

Headingley redemption at Edgbaston: Harry Brook scores 9th Test hundred

Harry Brook would not be denied on Friday, July 4 on Day 3 of Edgbaston as he got his redemption for missing out on a hundred in the first Test. Brook got to his 9th Test hundred off 137 balls and hit 12 boundaries and a six to help England land a counter-punch in the second Test. Brook looked in imperial touch during the Headingley Test when he rode on his look and was all set to get a big hundred during the first match of the series. However, a short ball from Prasidh Krishna would be his undoing and the England batter was caught in the deep. advertisementENG vs IND 2nd Test Day 3 Updates The knock, however, played a big role in England's win in the first Test and take a 1-0 lead in the series. Brook came into bat on Day 2 after India had posted a mammoth total of 587 and England were reeling at 25 for three. The 26-year-old came in and played a counter-attacking knock towards the end of Day 2 and remained unbeaten on 30. Day 3 meant some added responsibility for Brook as England lost both Joe Root and Ben Stokes off consecutive deliveries and India were on top as the hosts were reduced to 84 for five. From there, Brook and Jamie Smith rebuilt the innings and went on the counter. Brook was relatively quiet compared to Smith, who scored the joint third-fastest hundred by an England batter. But Brook also played some delightful shots to keep in touch with his partner. He did have two lucky moments as the England batter edged one that just went away from the grasp of Shubman Gill and almost chopped one on to the stumps off the same over. However, he was able to guide the ball to the boundary soon after the lunch break to get to his maiden hundred against India and put England in a strong position. - EndsTune InMust Watch

How VVS Laxman ensured Vaibhav Suryavanshi and his India U19 teammates witnessed Shubman Gill's masterful 269 at Edgbaston

Shubman Gill put on a show on Day 2 of the second Test between India and England and Vaibhav Suryavanshi was among the under-19 stars who were there at Edgbaston to witness it. Gill scored 269 in 387 balls which helped India put up a mammoth total 587. India then went on to take three wickets to finish the second day firmly on top. The India U19 team is also in England, touring the nation for five Youth ODIs and two Youtn tests. Their coach Hrishikesh Kanitkar said in a video posted on the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) website that National Cricket Academy (NCA) head and batting great VVS Laxman was instrumental in making sure that the colts were at Edgbaston on the day. 'VVS Laxman was instrumental in arranging this. He was the one who actually said that it would be a good thing to go and watch this game. It's definitely a special occasion for any upcoming cricketer to be at a Test venue,' said Kanitkar in a video posted by BCCI. Gill shared a stand of 203 runs off 279 balls with Ravindra Jadeja (89 in 137) and 144 with Washington Sundar (42 off 103) and all of this allowed India to set up a mammoth total of 587. England then lost three wickets before Stumps on Day 2. India then started the third day in emphatic fashion, with Mohammed Siraj sending back Joe Root and Ben Stokes off consecutive deliveries in just the second over of the day. However, India have since been flattened by a mammoth stand between Harry Brook and Jamie Smith, both of whom have scored centuries. Gill, who became the 26th Indian cricketer to hit a Test double hundred, also became the first Asian captain to score a double hundred in a Test match in England with his 387-ball knock of 269. It also meant that he made the highest individual score by an Indian batsman in England as he surpassed Sunil Gavaskar's 221 scored at the Oval. His knock is also the highest-ever Test score by an Indian captain as he surpassed Virat Kohli's unbeaten 254 against South Africa in 2019.
