Brenda Blethyn unrecognisable as she takes on 'iconic role' in Channel 4 reboot
Brenda Blethyn has been spotted looking completely different to her Vera character as she takes on a new role in the reboot of A Woman of Substance.
Brenda Blethyn is set to surprise fans of Vera as she embarks on a fresh endeavour, taking on a new character that's a stark contrast to her familiar ITV role.
At 79-years-old, Brenda is stepping into the shoes of Emma Harte in the revamped version of the 1984 Emmy-nominated drama A Woman of Substance, which will broadcast on Channel 4.

The series, adapted from the 1979 novel by the same title, charts the extraordinary journey of Emma Harte, a Yorkshire maid who becomes a powerful businesswoman and establishes a thriving department store empire.

Captured on set in photos released by Digital Spy, the esteemed actress appears almost unrecognisable sporting white hair arranged in a vintage 70s style.
Clad in a cream coat, Brenda was photographed wearing a silk scarf and rain bonnet, complete with circular sunglasses and a red work bag emblazoned with the initials EH, reports Devon Live.

In this reimagined adaptation, Brenda takes on the lead role, while Jessica Reynolds portrays the younger Emma Harte. The original series featured Deborah Kerr and Jenny Seagrove in these roles back in 1984.
The show's synopsis describes the plot as follows: "Emma Harte, an impoverished ambitious maid in Yorkshire, England goes on a dizzying journey to become the world's richest woman, gazing down from a sprawling luxury New York penthouse. A rags-to-riches tale of women through the 20th century, Emma defies the expectations of her society, fearlessly challenging the roles she's given, smashing glass ceilings, and never, ever deviating from her masterplan: Get to the top. Whatever it takes."

Brenda expressed her delight at stepping into the role, saying: "I'm overjoyed to be taking on this iconic role in the footsteps of the great Deborah Kerr. As a fan of [author] Barbara Taylor Bradford, it is an unmissable opportunity to play the fierce Emma Harte."
Jessica shared her enthusiasm as well, remarking: "To be a part of A Woman of Substance and to step into the shoes of Emma is an absolute dream for me."
She continued, highlighting the team's talent: "The team and cast we have behind this are truly inspiring and I'm so excited to bring the stunning scripts and this great piece of literature to the screen."

Celebrity Bake Off 'signs up iconic British girlband star as she joins A-list line-up'

Celebrity Bake Off is heating up – and an iconic British girlband star is reportedly set to join a slew of A-listers in the tent. The next series, set to air in 2026, will see Sugababes star Mutya Buena, 40, take part in the Channel 4 show to raise money for Stand Up To Cancer, according to The Sun. A TV insider told the publication: 'Mutya will be seeing if she can get a handshake from Paul Hollywood when she goes into the tent. 'She doesn't consider herself much of a baker, but it's for charity and there are bound to be some.' MailOnline has contacted Channel 4 and Mutya's representative for comment. Mutya will be hoping to find her footing in the kitchen after her Celebrity MasterChef appearance last year, where she struggled with a cheesecake challenge. She famously created a buttery biscuit base that was so thick you could have used it to wedge open a door. Despite crashing out of the competition, the singer said she was proud of her progress. She said: 'I wanted to do Celebrity MasterChef because I enjoy cooking in general and I love cooking for my family and friends. 'I wanted to learn some new things in the kitchen, some new tricks that I could bring home.' The upcoming Stand Up To Cancer special is already shaping up to be a star-studded affair. Hollywood actress Ambika Mod, 29, who rose to fame in This Is Going To Hurt and more recently starred in One Day, will also reportedly be stepping into the tent alongside Geordie Shore favourite Vicky Pattison, 37. Also joining the line-up are comedian Babatunde Aleshe, 38, Love Island star Molly-Mae Hague, 26, and former Celebrity Big Brother contestant JoJo Siwa, 22. They'll be joined by RAG 'N' Bone Man, 40, broadcaster Edith Bowman, 51, and 8 Out of 10 Cats regular Jon Richardson, 42 – all ready to be judged by Cherish Finden and Paul Hollywood in the iconic Bake Off tent. The news of Mutya's appearance comes after Prue Leith, 85, announced she was stepping away from all Great British Bake Off specials earlier this year (L-R Paul, Prue, Noel, and Alison pictured last year) The news of Mutya's appearance comes after Prue Leith, 85, announced earlier this year that she would be stepping away from all Great British Bake Off specials. Her place was temporarily filled by food writer Caroline Waldegrave, 72, during the most recent celebrity series. Prue confirmed the news on This Morning, explaining she will continue on the main show alongside Paul, 59, but will no longer appear on spin-offs.

The former Arrested Development actor, 81, appeared to have a disgruntled expression on his face as he wore a blue-colored padded shirt, khaki shorts, black sneakers, and a baseball cap. Tambor has been out of the spotlight since November 2017 when he was at the center of sexual misconduct allegations brought forth by a former assistant and a co-star on the Amazon Studio series Transparent. At the time, Tambor had been accused of harassing and groping his former assistant and actress, Van Barnes, and made inappropriate sexual advances against his then-co-star Trace Lysette - both transgender actresses. Read more in The U.S. Sun 'BROKEN HEARTS' Country music star, 24, dies in tragic accident after fall off pickup truck The scandal led to Tambor's firing from the Amazon Studios show despite the Emmy-winning actor denying the accusations. "I am profoundly disappointed in Amazon's handling of these false accusations against me," Tambor, who starred as Maura Pfefferman, a transgender character, for four seasons on the series, said in a statement to NPR at the time. "I am even more disappointed in Jill Soloway's unfair characterization of me as someone who would ever cause harm to any of my fellow cast mates," he added, referring to the show's creator and co-writer. "In our four-year history of working together on this incredible show, these accusations have NEVER been revealed or discussed directly with me or anyone at Amazon. "Therefore, I can only surmise that the investigation against me was deeply flawed and biased toward the toxic politicized atmosphere that afflicted our set." At the time, Soloway praised Barnes and Lysette for their courage in "speaking out about their experience on Transparent." "We are grateful to the many trans people who have supported our vision for Transparent since its inception and remain heartbroken about the pain and mistrust their experience has generated in our community," Soloway said. "We are taking definitive action to ensure our workplace respects the safety and dignity of every individual, and are taking steps to heal as a family." Tambor was never charged with any crimes in regards to the allegations made by Barnes and Lysette. When the accusations first surfaced, Tambor apologized for any inadvertent misbehavior, but denied any intentional harassment or sex abuse. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in May 2018, Tambor admitted that his "ill-temper" did not make him the "easiest person to work with" on set. "I know I haven't always been the easiest person to work with. I can be volatile and ill-tempered, and too often I express my opinions harshly and without tact," he added. "But I have never been a predator - ever." 7 A frail Jeffrey Tambor was seen pushing a shopping cart with a single shopping bag as he exited a Trader Joe's in North Carolina Credit: Tim Jackson - Commissioned by The U.S. Sun Digital Edition 7 Tambor portrayed Maura Pfefferman, a divorced transgender Jewish parent of three, on Amazon Studios' Transparent Credit: Alamy 7 Tambor has vehemently denied the sexual misconduct allegations against him and has never been charged criminally Credit: Tim Jackson - Commissioned by The U.S. Sun Digital Edition SHOCKING ACCUSATIONS The allegations against Tambor came at the height of the MeToo Movement when sexual harassment and assault accusations were made against powerful bigwigs such as Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, and Bill Cosby, among others. At the time, Lysette, the Transparent actor, accused Tambor of making unsolicited advances that included kisses on her forehead. Lysette also alleged that while shooting a scene for the Amazon show, Tambor told her, "My God, Trace, I want to attack you sexually." The actress claimed that minutes later, Tambor moved over next to her in his pajamas and "put his feet on top of hers," and started "little thrusts on her hip." "They were discreet and insidious and creepy. I felt his genitals on me. And I pushed him off," Lysette alleged. Months after Barnes, Tambor's former assistant, and Lysette came forward with their allegations, actress Jessica Walter claimed her former Arrested Development co-star verbally harassed her. However, Walter admitted that Tambor never sexually harassed or assaulted her. "[Tambor] never crossed the line on our show, with any, you know, sexual whatever," the actress told The New York Times in May 2018. "Verbally, yes, he harassed me, but he did apologize." In his interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Tambor acknowledged that he once had a "blowup" with Walter, confessing that he "profusely apologized" to his co-star after. "I drove myself and my castmates crazy," he said. "Lines got blurred. I was difficult. I was mean."

Heartbroken Hollyoaks star Steph Waring reveals co-stars ‘stopped speaking to her' after she was axed with no warning

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) HEARTBROKEN Hollyoaks star Steph Waring has revealed her co-stars have "stopped speaking to her" after she was axed with no warning. The actress - who played Cindy Cunningham in the Channel 4 soap - was let go last year, leaving her devastated. 5 Axed Hollyoaks star Steph Waring has revealed she has lost touch with her co-stars after she was fired Credit: Instagram 5 Steph played Cindy Cunningham in the Channel 4 soap off-and-on for 28 years Credit: Channel 4 5 Steph says her co-stars have stopped calling to check in on her Credit: Instagram The much-loved star, 47, was on Hollyoaks for 28 years and was even on the soap from day one. That's why fans were left shocked when she revealed that she had been given the chop by bosses. However, in a further blow, Steph has now admitted that she misses the friendships she once had with her fellow cast members. Speaking on the latest episode of the Secure The Insecure podcast, she said: "I did feel the quiet from the family that I once knew on the show. "No one's picking up the phone. No one's checking in. "Everyone's just getting on with their life. "When you're in that Hollyoaks bubble and they call it a family - I feel you're only family when you're in it." Steph - who didn't name any of co-stars in particular - added: "You pour your heart out to these people and then you go and it's like it never happened. "Where did that friendship go? There's only a couple of people I'm in contact with." Last month, Steph opened up about her heartbreaking reaction on the day bosses told her she would no longer be on Hollyoaks. 'I collapsed on the floor in tears and begged Hollyoaks bosses not to axe me' reveals 'distraught' Steph Waring as she admits co-stars had to 'pick her up' Writing in her book Breaking the Script, the actress said: 'I walked into the office. "There were two people there for the meeting: the newly appointed executive producer – a stalwart behind the scenes in various roles for years – and the long-standing head of production, who I'd known since I began on the show back in 1996. 'They asked me to sit. They explained that they'd be reading a scripted statement. As I listened, I could barely process what was being said. I was just waiting for the words I longed to hear: 'And therefore, we'd like Cindy to stay.' 'But as the statement neared its close, before the final words were even spoken, I felt a tear roll down my cheek. I was shaking as I looked at the two of them. 5 Stephanie revealed her true reaction after being let go from Hollyoaks Credit: Instagram 5 The star was on Hollyoaks from the very first episode Credit: Channel 4 'Then it happened. 'And with that said, we will be losing Cindy from the show. I'm so sorry, Steph.' The world stopped for a second as I replayed those words in my head. Then… I lost my s***. ''What? No! You mean you're not taking me to the 30th?' I blurted out, referencing the upcoming anniversary of the show – a milestone that meant so much to the long-standing cast. ''I don't understand. No, I don't understand. I don't understand!' I was frantic. 'But I've been so loyal. Please, no. This is my life. I love my job – please, no!' 'Hysterically crying, I repeated myself, hoping one of them would see my distress and take it all back. Had they made a mistake? My world felt like it was imploding. Through my tears, I demanded to know, 'How am I on that list? Cindy is an original! I'm the longest-serving female character. I was the first person to give birth on the show.' 'I was clutching at anything, anything at all, to make them realise their mistake. How? Why was I the only original being cut? I couldn't understand. It felt so cold. I could see the distress I was causing them.' She fled the room and was found by her co-stars Jennifer Metcalfe and Kirsty Leigh Porter who supported her before she could go home to husband Tom. Stephanie also revealed how her agent had become determined to get soap bosses to reverse their decision - but in the end the actress herself decided she didn't want to stay. Since her Hollyoaks exit Steph has reinvented herself as a life coach.
