Mariners, Diamondbacks May Swing Another Trade After Josh Naylor Deal
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Arizona Diamondbacks came into the trade season with the expectation that they would be among the biggest sellers in baseball. Going into Thursday, there had only been a handful of trades made this year. Beyond the Rafael Devers blockbuster, none of these trades involved any game-changing players. On Thursday, the Diamondbacks changed that. Arizona traded first baseman Josh Naylor to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for prospects Ashton Izzi and Brandyn Garcia. Both prospects were ranked in the top 20 of Seattle's system, per MLB Pipeline. This trade works for both sides. The Diamondbacks are able to add some pitching prospects to their system, which is a spot in the farm that Arizona still needs to upgrade. The Mariners are able to land the first baseman they need for their lineup. First base has been a weak spot for months now, and Naylor's presence adds a new wrinkle alongside Cal Raleigh in Seattle. But this isn't the last time these two sides will likely talk trades this season. In fact, they could swing another trade in the next few days. PHOENIX, ARIZONA - JULY 23: Christian Walker #8 of the Houston Astros talks to former teammate Eugenio Suárez #28 of the Arizona Diamondbacks while on third base during the game at Chase Field on July... PHOENIX, ARIZONA - JULY 23: Christian Walker #8 of the Houston Astros talks to former teammate Eugenio Suárez #28 of the Arizona Diamondbacks while on third base during the game at Chase Field on July 23, 2025 in Phoenix, Arizona. MoreSlugger Eugenio Suárez has been closely linked to the Mariners this season. Seattle is expected to be one of the more aggressive teams in his trade sweepstakes. While the Diamondbacks could have traded the two pieces (Naylor and Suárez) at the same time to the Mariners, it makes sense to hold onto Suárez so that a bidding war can ensue. Now, the Mariners can continue to hunt Suárez in a trade, but other teams will have their fair chance to land him, too. It's a very smart move from the Diamondbacks, and it shows their front office isn't rushing anything. Don't be surprised if these two sides are linked again in the coming days. With the trade deadline around a week away, Seattle and Arizona will likely remain in trade talks until Suárez comes off the board. Boston Celtics waive recently-crowned G League MVP JD Davison
According to a league source, the Celtics are waiving guard JD the G League MVP, is no longer eligible for a two-way contract with the Cs but could sign one elsewhere or compete for a roster now have one open spot, but no move imminent. The Boston Celtics have waived JD Davison. The 22-year-old guard, who was named as the 2025 G-League MVP, will now become an unrestricted free agent and will be free to sign with any team in the NBA. Davison spent three seasons with the Boston Celtics, with all three of them coming on a two-way deal (except for the final few weeks of the 2024-25 season, where he signed a full-scale NBA contract). As such, Davison is ineligible to sign another two-way contract with Boston, but is free to do so with another franchise. By waiving Davison, the Celtics have ducked under the second luxury tax apron while also opening up a roster spot. However, more moves will need to be made if Boston wishes to completely avoid the second apron. Davison was drafted with the 53rd pick in the 2022 NBA draft. He's played in a total of 36 regular-season games for the Celtics, averaging 1.9 points per game on 38.5% shooting from the field and 28.1% from 3-point range. Before entering the NBA, Davison was a one-and-done prospect out of Alabama, where he played in 33 games, averaging 8.5 points, 4.3 assists and 4.8 rebounds per outing. After showcasing his skills in the G League in recent years, he now needs to land with a roster that can provide him with legitimate playing time, so that he can continue to develop his game against high-level competition. Unfortunately, that role wasn't going to be available for him on the Celtics, even with the current roster retooling that's taking place. Orioles closer Félix Bautista placed on injured list with right shoulder discomfort
CLEVELAND — Baltimore Orioles closer Félix Bautista, who is tied for sixth in the American League with 19 saves, was placed on the 15-day injured list Thursday with right shoulder discomfort. Interim manager Tony Mansolino said the right-hander felt uncomfortable while stretching in the bullpen Wednesday during a 3-2 loss to the Cleveland Guardians. Bautista will undergo an MRI when the Orioles return home Friday. 'The (dugout) phone rang in the seventh inning last night and I thought, 'That is not good,'' Mansolino said. 'Then I heard it get slammed down and knew it wasn't good. 'Félix had started his process of getting loose and that's when it flared up.' Bautista did not pitch in the first three games of the series in Cleveland, last seeing action on Sunday at Tampa Bay when he earned his 19th save in 20 opportunities. He missed the entire 2024 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery. The 30-year-old Dominican has a 1-1 record and 2.60 ERA in 35 appearances, limiting opponents to a .134 batting average over 34 2/3 innings. Bautista has struck out 50 and walked 23. 'We just have to hope it's not too serious,' Mansolino said. The Orioles will use a closer-by-committee in the short term with righty setup men Seranthony Domínguez and Yennier Cano at the front of the line. 'We're going to have to bump up their roles,' Mansolino said. 'We'll figure it out.' Bautista will not enter free agency until 2028, but is eligible for arbitration following this season. The 6-foot-8, 285-pounder is in the final year of a two-year, $2 million contract. With the Orioles out of wild-card contention, they are expected to be active sellers before the July 31 trade deadline. ___ AP MLB:
