Steelers countdown to kickoff — No. 47: a history of the number and who wore it best

USA Today3 days ago
The Steelers countdown to kickoff is here — and we're at 47 days until Pittsburgh faces off against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium. In the spirit of the countdown, we're taking a look at the history of No. 47 and the players who wore it best.
Current Steelers No. 47 wearer: N/A
There isn't a current wearer of No. 47 on the Steelers roster — and for good reason, as the number has been officially retired out of respect for one of the greatest cornerbacks in NFL history.
Last five Steelers to wear No. 47:
Best No. 47 in Steelers history: CB Mel Blount
There's no debating this selection — Mel Blount is the best Steeler to ever wear No. 47. Drafted by Pittsburgh with the 53rd overall pick in the third round of the 1970 NFL Draft, Blount played in 200 games over 14 seasons for Pittsburgh — winning four Super Bowls with the legendary Steel Curtain defense, earning five Pro Bowl honors, two First-Team All-Pro selections, four Second-Team All-Pro selections, and the 1975 NFL Defensive Player of the Year award.
For his stellar career, he was named to the NFL 1980s All-Decade Team, 75th Anniversary Team, 100th Anniversary Team, Steelers All-Time Team, and Steelers Hall of Honor. Blount finished his career with 57 interceptions — the most in franchise history. His elite and physical style of play led to the creation of the illegal contact rule, widely referred to as the 'Mel Blount Rule.' Blount was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1989 and remains the greatest Steeler to have worn — or ever will wear — No. 47.

The ultimate Matthew Stafford backup? Why the Rams love Jimmy Garoppolo

No Matthew Stafford, no problem. At least for now. With the Rams' star quarterback sidelined because of what coach Sean McVay has described as back soreness, 12th-year pro Jimmy Garoppolo is running the offense as the Rams prepare for their Sept. 7 opener against the Houston Texans. 'I found out pretty suddenly,' Garoppolo said of his elevation to the first-team offense on the eve of training camp. 'But that's the life of a backup quarterback.' Read more: $100-million payday ahead? Puka Nacua knows a strong 2025 for Rams could reap big rewards Stafford, entering his 17th season, is expected to join workouts next week, according to McVay. If Stafford's back problem persists, that could be trouble for a team that is expected to be a Super Bowl contender. In the meantime, they are relying on Garoppolo, who is something of a luxury for McVay and the Rams. Garoppolo, 33, is 43-21 as an NFL starter in stints with the New England Patriots, San Francisco 49ers and Las Vegas Raiders. He led the 49ers to the Super Bowl in the 2019 season and has played in seven postseason games. 'Jimmy Garoppolo is a starting quarterback,' McVay said. 'Obviously, we feel so fortunate to have somebody like Matthew leading the way, but Jimmy's done a great job.' Garoppolo signed with the Rams before last season after an injury-plagued 2023 season with the Raiders. The belief by many was that it would be a one-year residency with the Rams before Garoppolo sought a starting opportunity elsewhere. During the offseason, the Rams explored possibly trading Stafford before reaching agreement on an adjusted contract. Garoppolo, who had been regarded as a bridge possibility if the Rams moved on from Stafford, signed another one-year deal in March worth just over $3 million, according to 'Sean plays a big role,' Garoppolo said when asked why he decided to remain with the Rams. 'Honestly, it's just the people here. ... Having been around 12 years, you see both sides of it — and the other side can get old real quick. ... You've got to be around good people.' Garoppolo played in only one game last season. He completed 27 of 41 passes for 334 yards and two touchdowns, with an interception, in a 30-25 defeat by the Seattle Seahawks in the regular-season finale. Now he is preparing for his 12th season. How does the mentality feel? 'I never want to half-ass anything in my life. So I've loved this game of football and I've always given it everything I have. So when the day comes, I think I'll know. Jordan Hicks retires, leaving Browns with more concerns at linebacker

BEREA, Ohio (AP) — The Cleveland Browns situation at linebacker became a bigger concern on Friday after Jordan Hicks announced his retirement. Hicks missed the first two days of training camp with what the team called a personal matter. The 33-year-old Hicks posted his retirement announcement on Instagram after 10 years in the league. 'Football has given me more than I could have ever imagined. Purpose, discipline, brotherhood, and a platform to impact others. But most importantly it showed me who I am outside the game,' Hicks said in his post. 'I leave this chapter with deep gratitude for every lesson, challenge, and victory. I'm proud of what l accomplished on the field, but even more proud of the man I've become because of it.' Hicks played 12 games last season and was third on the team with 78 tackles. The Browns were already down one middle linebacker going into camp with Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah out for the season with a neck injury. Hicks was a third-round pick by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2015. He also played for Arizona and Minnesota before signing as an unrestricted free agent with Cleveland last year. 'I'm truly just happy for him, just to leave on your own terms, do it the way you want to do it. Just having a great career,' linebacker Jerome Baker said. Rookie Carson Schwesinger, the 33rd overall pick in April's draft, could move into Hick's starting spot. Nathaniel Watson was Hicks' backup at the end of last season. 'When you lose a player due to injury or retirement or whatever, there's opportunities that come up for younger players and in this day and age, young players play early at these positions," coach Kevin Stefanski said before the start of Friday's practice. "They may be counted on and that's why we're working so hard. That's why we're trying to be efficient with everything we do, maximize every rep and minute that we have with these young men to get them ready to play.' Devin Bush, one of the other starters at linebacker, could miss part of the season if he is suspended by the league for violations of the personal conduct policy. Bush was charged with simple assault and harassment after being arrested in May outside of Pittsburgh. ___ AP NFL:

Calais Campbell gives Walter Nolen advice about calf injury

The 19-year veteran advised the first-round rookie to let his calf heal and not rush his return. There was some numbness and a distinct feeling of déjà vu when Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon revealed on Wednesday that rookie defensive lineman Walter Nolen III had suffered a calf injury while training in preparation for training camp and would miss some time. He began camp on the active/physically unable to perform (PUP) list. He is expected to miss at least most of training camp. Putting any timeframe on the situation is fraught with unknowns, even for the team, while considering that outside the organization it's not known when the injury occurred. Also complicating things is that diligent care has to be taken, as all injuries are, but especially when a calf injury can lead to issues with the Achilles. Nolen injured his right calf. Longtime veteran defensive lineman Calais Campbell addressed the unfortunate news when he was asked Thursday what advice he had given his linemate. 'My No. 1 advice was let it heal all the way,' Campbell said. 'Calves have a big re-injury rate when you try to rush back. He's very excited, as any rookie would be to get back on the field and it's like ... you're going to be fine. I know you want to get in training camp and be around the guys and compete and show what you can do, but let it heal all the way so it doesn't bother you the rest of the season. 'We know what you can do. We'll get you healthy. We'll get you ready to go when the time comes.' Those words make it even more impossible to forget how a calf injury 11 months ago essentially derailed defensive lineman Darius Robinson's rookie season. It's instructive to revisit everything Robinson experienced in 2024, while hoping Nolen has a better result. Darius Robinson injury timeline For Nolen, the question will be whether he can recover enough to avoid being placed on reserve/PUP when rosters have to be reduced to 53 on Aug. 26. If he ends up on reserve, that will result in not being able to practice or play until after the fourth game of the season.
