Prices Gone Mad: VW Wants $32,000 for a Hatchback With 94 HP

Motor 112-06-2025
The Polo turns 50 this year. Hardly breaking news. Well, Volkswagen is giving the baby Golf a special edition to mark half a century since the original model, penned by Bertone's Marcello Gandini, came out. It goes on sale today in Germany, but the price tag reminded me just how expensive cars have gotten in Europe in recent years.
The Polo Edition 50 starts at €28,200, equivalent to approximately $32,500 at current exchange rates. Sure, it's a generously equipped version with heated front seats and whatnot. However, it's still not a fully loaded configuration.
VW
charges extra for niceties such as two-zone automatic climate control, keyless functionality, and the panoramic sunroof. More importantly, it's far from being a GTI in terms of power.

In its most basic form, the special edition makes do with a turbocharged 1.0-liter engine hooked up to a five-speed manual transmission. The three-pot produces just 94 horsepower, but you can upgrade to more potent versions of the 1.0 TSI with up to 114 hp. The slightly more powerful versions can be ordered with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Opting for the DSG increases pricing further.
The Edition 50 may cost about as much as a Golf GTI in the United States, but it's not even the most expensive Polo available in Germany. The GTI kicks off at €35,450 (nearly $41,000). Step up to its bigger brother, and VW will charge you €45,710 (almost $53,000) for a
Golf GTI
. Pricing for the Golf R begins at €55,000 ($63,400), and there's also an R Black Edition for a staggering €59,645 ($69,000).
We're not done yet. In the Polo and Golf world, the most expensive model was a German market-only
Golf R 333, priced at a whopping €76,410
($88,000). It was even more expensive than an Audi RS3, but nonetheless, VW sold all 333 cars in just eight minutes. Imagine how successful a five-cylinder Golf R would be with the 2.5 TFSI engine. Rumor has it
Audi refused to lend its inline-five
a few years back.

But these crazy prices are not an isolated case. Cars sold in Europe are generally more expensive compared to the US. The discrepancy largely stems from the value-added tax. VAT is 19% in Germany, but it can be as high as 27% in Hungary. The EU's average standard VAT rate is 21.8%.
Aside from VAT, extra local taxes based on emissions result in ridiculous prices for some performance cars. That's why a
Honda Civic Type R is over $100,000
in the Netherlands, while a Toyota GR Yaris is also a
six-figure car in France
.
Europeans may have a greater variety of options than Americans when it comes to choosing their next car, but they're paying dearly.

GM Beats Tesla in EV Growth, Reports 7% Jump in Overall Q2 Deliveries

General Motors Company GM has witnessed a 7.3% hike in its year-on-year sales growth in the second quarter, totaling deliveries of 746,588 vehicles, following a 16.7% increase in the first quarter. Deliveries rose 12% year over year in the first half of 2025. It was GM's best first-half since 2019. In contrast to this, Tesla, Inc. (TSLA) has seen its deliveries shrink in Q2 as it struggles with a dated lineup, expensive pricing and the controversial politics. Tesla reported 384,122 vehicle deliveries, a 14% straight decline from the year-ago level of 443,956. This was the second consecutive quarter that witnessed double-digit declines. GM has been continually launching newer and redesigned models over the past two years. The company now has a lineup of 11 EV models, of which Chevrolet has displayed the highest growth 134% in the H1 sales, led by Equinox EV, which has secured its place among the top three best-selling EVs. Similarly, Cadillac emerged as the luxury EV market share leader in Q2. GM boasts of an EV market share of 16%, close to its total market share of 17% in the second quarter, following its 100% growth surge in EV sales. The boost in sales is a result of its investments in crossovers, SUVs and pickups, both gas and electric, paired with great execution. This enabled GM to beat the estimated 4% total auto industry growth. To keep up with the wave, GM is planning to further invest around $4 billion to strengthen its U.S. production and combat the impact of tariffs and other government policies. GM and TSLA currently carry a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) and Zacks Rank #5 (Strong Sell), respectively. Some better-ranked stocks in the auto space are Ferrari N.V. RACE, Luminar Technologies LAZR and Westport Fuel Systems WPRT. While RACE sports a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy) at present, LAZR and WPRT carry a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy) each. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for RACE's current-year earnings is pegged at $9.89 per share, indicating a 7.97% year-over-year earnings beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate in each of the trailing four quarters, with an average surprise of 10.75%. RACE's shares have gained 16% in the past year. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for Luminar's 2025 loss is pegged at $4.29 per share, indicating an improvement of 53.57% from year-ago levels. The company's earnings beat the consensus estimate in each of the trailing four quarters, with an average surprise of 11.79%. Max Verstappen's Red Bull Exit Clause Sparks $136 Million Mercedes Buzz

Max Verstappen's Red Bull Exit Clause Sparks $136 Million Mercedes Buzz originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Could the reigning F1 champion really swap Red Bull's famous blue for Mercedes silver? That question is racing through the paddock after fresh reports reignited talk of Max Verstappen triggering an eye-watering exit clause, potentially setting up a $136 Million move. Advertisement Verstappen's current deal runs through 2028, but multiple insiders confirm it contains a performance-related escape route. The exact threshold remains unclear. Some say Verstappen only needs to fall outside the top two in the Drivers' Championship before the summer break to activate it. Others, including Sky Sports' Craig Slater, insist he must drop out of the top four, a line reportedly backed by sources close to the situation. The four-time world champion is currently third in the standings, 61 points behind McLaren's Oscar Piastri. With three rounds left before the summer shutdown in Hungary, including Silverstone this weekend, Verstappen still holds a slim buffer: just nine points over Mercedes' George Russell and 36 over Ferrari's Charles Leclerc. Max Verstappen during FP3 at Canadian Kirouac-Imagn Images Sky Sports added that any team hoping to prise Verstappen away from Red Bull this early would likely have to pay a fee 'in excess of $136 Million.' For Mercedes boss Toto Wolff, it could be a once-in-a-generation gamble to rebuild his team around the sport's most unstoppable driver. Advertisement Still, Red Bull's top brass are brushing off the speculation. Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko insists there's 'currently no reason to worry,' while team principal Christian Horner dismissed the Mercedes chatter as 'a lot of noise.' 'It's all entirely speculative,' Horner told Sky F1. 'We're very clear with the contract we have with Max until 2028, and tend not to pay too much attention.' Even so, F1's silly season may be entering its most explosive phase yet. If Verstappen's form falters before August, don't be surprised if Wolff and Mercedes move heaven and earth to make this blockbuster deal happen.
