LABUAN: The GRS State Government should consider a 'special panel' to overcome road and water woes, and a new approach to tackle legacy issues. Activist Haji Abdul Jalil Ghani said even Labuan residents can see that the GRS government led by Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor had done well and scored good marks in boosting State revenue as well achieving recognition for a number of rights under the MA63. 'But the negative condition of Sabah roads and the non-ending water crisis despite millions of ringgit already spent could cloud the State's achievements in many other areas as it approaches the State election,' he said. PGRS meet to chart strategy ahead of polls
Published on: Tuesday, July 22, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 22, 2025 By: Larry Ralon, Rahim Matnin Text Size: Hajiji emphasised that GRS would contest the majority of seats in the coming election, while considering local aspirations in determining candidate placements and seat allocations. Kota Kinabalu: The Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (PGRS) General Assembly, scheduled for this weekend, will serve as a key platform for charting its strategy ahead of the impending 17th State Election (PRN17). Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, who is also PGRS President, said the three-day meeting is in accordance with the party's constitution and comes at a crucial time as the State prepares for polls. 'It is a constitutional requirement but particularly important as we are heading into a state election that could be held any time after the assembly. So, let's wait and see,' he told a press conference. Asked about the key highlights of the convention, Hajiji, who is also the Chairman of Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS,) said he would deliver important announcements and messages during the assembly. On political cooperation, Hajiji confirmed that Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) had held several discussions with Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders, including Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is also PH Chairman. 'Yes, we've had several discussions, including with the Prime Minister. I believe we will come to a final decision. We will announce it when the time is right. 'There will definitely be formal discussions. We want to continue the cooperation between GRS and PH, the current State Government,' he added. Hajiji emphasised that GRS would contest the majority of seats in the coming election, while considering local aspirations in determining candidate placements and seat allocations. 'Of course (GRS will contest the majority). But we also want to listen to local aspirations. We will make the best decision for Sabah because political stability is crucial. 'It's not just about winning the election, but also about ensuring post-election political stability. Only then can we plan and develop our State,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? IGNIS 3R technology to remediate landfills
Published on: Tuesday, July 22, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 22, 2025 By: Nikko Fabian Text Size: Joachim and others at the project site. SANDAKAN: Sabah's long-standing struggle with legacy landfill sites is entering a new chapter. Deputy Chief Minister Il Datuk Dr Joachim Gunsalam said the State Government has launched a comprehensive rehabilitation project at the Sg Sibuga landfill, employing cutting-edge IGNIS 3R technology. 'This initiative represents a significant shift towards sustainable and environmentally responsible waste management,' said Joachim, who is also State Local Government and Housing it Minister. He said the rehabilitation goes beyond simply addressing a long-standing problem. 'It's a strategic investment in Sabah's future.' He highlighted the significant health, safety and land-use impacts of these neglected sites, calling them a 'legacy burden' that has plagued the State for years. 'The choice of technology was carefully considered, rejecting less suitable options like incinerators and waste-to-energy plants due to cost, logistical and feasibility concerns,' he said. Joachim stressed the importance of a long-term solution, avoiding quick fixes that would burden future generations. The selection of IGNIS 3R, a technology championed by Sabah-born CEO Dr Davina Markus of SG Ignis (Sabah) Sdn Bhd, underscores the Government's commitment to local talent and innovation. Joachim also expressed pride in empowering Sabahans to lead a world-class initiative. The technology's ability to remediate old landfills without the need for waste sorting, open burning, or leaving behind soil contaminants, was a key factor in its selection. While acknowledging it's not a perfect system, Joachim presented it as the best available solution. The project's success hinges on collaboration, he said, and also called for full support from local authorities, technical departments and the community to position the Sg Sibuga project as a model for future waste management initiatives across Sabah. 'This strategic investment reflects the Sabah Government's commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainable development, showcasing a proactive approach to addressing long-standing environmental challenges. ' The event was attended by key figures, including the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Local Government and Housing, Datuk Dr Jamili Nais, Sandakan Municipal Council President Walter Kinson and State Assembly members. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Bung Mokhtar: Sabah BN unperturbed by GRS-PH alliance for state election
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Barisan Nasional (BN) is not perturbed by Gabungan Rakyat Sabah's (GRS) decision to work with Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the upcoming state election. Sabah BN chairman Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin said the party is instead focusing on strengthening its grassroots machinery and fielding candidates in constituencies where it has the best chance of winning. "Umno Sabah is not too concerned with whom GRS wants to work. As of now, BN is only cooperating with PH. "Our priority is to strengthen our machinery at the grassroots level, and we will field our candidates in constituencies where we are confident of winning," he told the New Straits Times. Bung Mokhtar added that BN was prepared for any electoral battle. The former state deputy chief minister said it does not matter whom the coalition would face or go up against. "What matters is that we are ready to defend our existing seats, and on top of that, we aim to win back those we previously lost," he said. His statement comes amid confirmation from Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor that GRS will maintain its alliance with PH for the 17th Sabah state election, despite calls for the Sabah-based coalition to contest solo. Hajiji said both coalitions have held seat negotiation talks, including discussions with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is also PH chairman. GRS has 38 state seats, Parti Warisan 14, Umno 11 and PH 7. Umno's seats include Bengkoka, Usukan, Karambunai, Tanjung Keramat, Pantai Manis, Sungai Manila, Sungai Sibuga, Lamag, Sukau, Segama and Tanjung Batu.
