Woman's Ex Tried to Crash Her Vacation. But When He Got to the Airport His Passport Didn't Work and She Knows Why

A woman detailed a recent travel incident that involved her ex-husband trying to crash an international trip she planned with their two kids
She explained that she and her ex had a messy divorce and that he owes her unpaid child support
Because he's behind on payments, she suspected his passport would be revoked, but she didn't tell him before he got to the airportA woman's ex-husband planned to follow her on vacation, but his trip was foiled after he ran into an issue with his passport. He didn't expect it — but she did.
The mom of two shared her story on Reddit's 'Am I The A—hole' forum, retelling how her ex tried to crash an international trip she had planned with their kids.
She claims she and her former husband had a messy divorce two years before the incident, alleging he 'began an affair" after the birth of their second child. She says he 'fought me every step and it took over a year to finalize.' While she gained primary custody of their kids, she notes that she still needs her ex's permission to bring them out of the country.
Recently, the original poster (OP) shares that she was planning to travel abroad to visit family with her 8-year-old son and 5-year-old daughter. When she told her ex she wanted to go on the trip with their kids, she claims he said he always wanted to visit her family's country and was coincidentally planning to go at the same time as them.
'I was already anticipating this," she writes, "because following us is something he does EVERY time I take the kids on a trip." So she was ready with all the above-board documentation. "My lawyer drafted a document to be signed and notarized that I was being given permission to take our kids out of the country for the specific dates. She also included a clause that he has up until 72 hours prior to the day of travel to revoke his permission. He agreed.'
The day of the trip, she arrived at the airport with her kids while her former spouse got there 'much later" only to find out upon trying to check in for the flight that his passport was revoked.
While he was stunned by the news, the OP admits, she wasn't totally in the dark as to why that might have been the case.
Another result of the divorce, she writes, was that he was ordered to pay child support, which she claims he has 'never done.' She explains that she signed up for enforcement so she doesn't have to 'badger' him about it, but he's still 'so far behind' that enforcement has 'suspended just about everything they can,' the OP writes. 'They send notices to him when this happens, but I'm sure he doesn't open them,' she claims.
She later claims in an edit of the post that her ex can afford the payments, but chooses not to.
'Turns out his passport was revoked due to lack of [child support] payment. He was denied at check-in and there's no way he can get his passport reinstated without paying his arrears in full,' she writes.
Once he figured out that he wouldn't be able to crash the vacation, she says, "He said that since he can't go, he no longer gives me permission to take [the kids]." In response to which, the OP "Reminded him that we are past the 72 hrs for him to deny my travel request.'
'I don't think I'm the a------ for continuing our trip; but I am questioning whether I'm an a------ for not giving him a heads up that he should check his passport. I didn't know it was revoked for sure, but I suspected,' she writes.
In the comments, the majority of users jumped in to tell the mother she didn't do anything wrong.
'It is not your responsibility to keep track of his passport. He would have received official communication of some sort advising of the block on his passport. Disregarding his mail is 100% on him,' one user wrote.
Another added, 'Ex needs to put on his big boy pants and read his mail. You aren't his mom,' followed by a different user who echoed, 'Oh darn, the consequences of his actions are catching up to him. You're not his secretary.'

According to the Office of Child Support Services, the U.S. State Department can revoke a passport if a parent owes $2,500 or more in past-due child support payments. It will send the parent a rejection notice in the mail when this happens.
If a parent owes $2,500 or more in child support payments, then they are also not eligible to apply for a passport either, according to the State Department's official website.

Small and 'picturesque' Sussex spot named among the UK's best for a short break

A small and "picturesque" city in Sussex has been named among the best places in the country for a short break. Which? has revealed the best city breaks in the UK for 2025. Following its latest survey of almost 4,000 Which? members, it narrowed down the best large UK cities for a short break. The survey also named the best medium-sized and best small UK cities for a short break. In April 2024, Which? asked 3,967 members to rate UK cities and towns they'd visited for leisure purposes and stayed in for at least one night in the past two years. Making the list of best small UK cities for a short break was Chichester, in West Sussex. The city earned a 69% on its customer score, which is based on a combination of overall satisfaction and how likely people are to recommend the city as a holiday destination to a friend. Each city was also ranked based on its average hotel price, food and drink, accommodation, cultural sights, shopping, ease of getting around, lack of crowds, parking and value for money. Wells, just below Bath in Somerset, got the highest customer score of anywhere in the survey with 86% and was the number one small UK cities for a short break. It was not the only spot in Sussex to be recognised. Brighton and Hove was named on the list of the best large UK cities for a short break. Chichester was recently named one of Britain's happiest places to live. On Chichester, the list by The Guardian said: "Bounded by the South Downs and the sea, Chichester's medieval graces have escaped the commuter belt blight because the 90-minute train journey puts it just out of range of London. "Dominating the city centre is the 11th-century cathedral with world-class choristers and art by Marc Chagall, John Piper and Elizabeth Frink mingling with Anglo-Saxon reliefs and medieval vaulting." It adds: "However you like to spend your spare time, you will find something to do in Chichester. There's a weekly street market in the city centre selling local produce and crafts, which is a happy place to potter. "Chichester Festival Theatre launches new works into the West End and beyond and has a stream of plays, comedy and family entertainment. And you have the great outdoors on your doorstep." Regarding things to do in the city, Visit Chichester lists recommends places such as the City Walls, Priory Park, Novium Museum and Chichester Art Trail. This $10 Amazon Find Kept My Friend's Phone Dry on the Ocean Floor—Now It's My No. 1 Travel Essential

Imagine it's your first day on a trip to one of the most secluded islands in the Caribbean. You're snorkeling with your phone in a waterproof pouch, capturing video of swaying soft coral and schools of shimmering fish, and then you drop said phone and watch it float slowly, gracefully to the bottom of the ocean. This exact scenario happened to my friend off the coast of Dominica. After sitting at least 15 feet underwater for several long, stressful minutes, the phone was retrieved by our boat captain, and to our surprise, it was dry. Now, I recommend these $10 phone pouches to anyone planning a beach or lake vacation. The waterproof pouch comes in a pack of two—currently 29 percent off $14—and, believe me, they are worth every penny to keep our $1,000 devices safe on the water. Naysayers will claim that they're happy to leave their phones back at the hotel while they go swimming, but what about taking pictures? Using navigation? Taking a video of the unbelievable view just below the surface of the water? This one affordable beach accessory takes all the risk out of it. It's big enough to hold even the largest iPhone ever made, the 16 Pro Max, as well as bank cards, cash, and other things you don't want to get wet. With its flexible PVC enclosure and locking top, it has a waterproof rating of IPX8, meaning it can withstand being submerged for more than 30 minutes. It has a lanyard that you should keep around your neck always, 100 percent of the time, if you are daring enough to take it into the water. You can also use it to keep everything dry while hiking in wet environments, which we also did a lot of in the Caribbean. The pouch is designed to be fully waterproof, but it's a good idea to test it before you travel. Reviewers do this by putting a paper towel inside it and submerging it under water. If the paper towel comes out dry, then you can (probably) trust it. Other travelers have had as much good fortune as I have with this little lifesaver. One reviewer wrote that while hiking across an Alaskan permafrost bog, 'I found a 'hole' that sank me to my chest in a heartbeat. Thank goodness my phone was in this waterproof pouch,' they said. 'It simply floated to the top of the 'puddle' safe and sound. I, on the other hand, had to be extracted from the bog by two young strapping fly fishing guides.' Another said that while they were on a rafting trip, their boat flipped and their group was in the water for several minutes, yet 'not a single drop of water had gotten into the case nor damaged our phones.' There are many other waterproof pouches like it at Amazon, but if you're looking to shop around, we found five options with some of the best reviews, including one for $8 that has more than 100,000 ratings. At the time of publishing, the price started at $10. Love a great deal? Sign up for our T+L Recommends newsletter and we'll send you our favorite travel products each week.
