NTPC Simhadri celebrates ‘28th Raising Day'
At the commemoration of NTPC Simhadri's 28th Raising Day, Sharma elaborated about the first coastal-based power plant's journey since its establishment in 1997.
He congratulated the employees for their continued efforts, lauded the station's performance in FY 2024–25, and called for collective dedication to achieve the milestones set for the current fiscal year.
The celebration included distribution of prizes to winners who took part in recent campaigns and competitions, including Swachhata Pakhwada, World Environment Day and International Yoga Day.
The occasion was marked by a flag-hoisting ceremony in the presence of senior officials of the organisation.

Thoothukudi may get $10 billion LATAM investment amid growing trade ties
CHENNAI: The port city of Thoothukudi is likely to attract a potential $10 billion investment from a Latin American country in the defence and security sector, amid growing trade ties between India and the Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) region. The investment is under negotiation and may be formalised through a memorandum of understanding by the end of the year, according to Rajkumar Sharma, President of the Indo Latin American Chamber of Commerce (ILACC). He declined to name the investing country or confirm whether the project is linked to the upcoming Kulasekharapatnam spaceport being developed near Thoothukudi. 'This is for national safety and security. I am not authorised to disclose further details,' Sharma said on the sidelines of the launch of ILACC's South India Chapter in Chennai. He noted that bilateral trade between India and Latin America has grown from $2 billion in 2000 to $18 billion today. Lithium and rare earth imports through South Indian ports are emerging as a priority, aligned with India's energy security goals. The announcement coincides with a broader strategic push to position South India as a hub for LAC investments in sectors such as defence, infrastructure, logistics, ports, and renewable energy. Sharma said southern states have already attracted more than $40 million in investments from the region, with Tamil Nadu receiving the largest share. The initiative was launched during Horizon 2025, a business conclave hosted by ILACC to mark the inauguration of its South India chapter. The event brought together diplomats, trade envoys, and business leaders from countries including Peru, Cuba, Chile, Venezuela, Argentina, and El Salvador.

Release salary, benefits to paralysed engineer from 2018: HC to govt
1 2 Jaipur: The Rajasthan High Court has ordered the agriculture department to pay regular monthly salary and service benefits, along with 6% interest since 2018, to an assistant engineer who became paralysed following a brain hemorrhage in 2017. In a broader directive, the court instructed the state's chief secretary to issue orders to all govt departments to identify similarly disabled employees and provide them benefits under Section 20(4) of the Rights of the Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016. Justice Mahender Kumar Goyal's single bench issued the orders on July 9 while disposing of a petition filed by Sunil Kumar Gupta. The order copy was uploaded online Saturday. "The petitioner was appointed as a junior engineer in the agriculture department in 1994 and was promoted as an assistant engineer. On Nov 16, 2017, he suffered a brain haemorrhage resulting in paralysis on the right side of his body. Since then, he is bedridden. His salary was stopped from April 12, 2018, to June 30, 2018, and from Jan 19 till date," said CP Sharma, counsel for the petitioner. After hearing the arguments, Justice Goyal asked the authorities to release the petitioner's salary and other benefits on a monthly basis with an interest of 6% since it was stopped. The court also directed the authorities to comply with its directions in four weeks after receiving the order copy and stated that if they fail, they will have to pay the same benefits with an interest of 9%. A compliance hearing is scheduled for Sept 11.

‘Sooner or later…': Paytm founder sees impact of AI on jobs as ‘inevitable'; says artificial intelligence will also create new roles
The impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on jobs is "inevitable", according to founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma, who said AI will become part of routine business processes sooner rather than later. He said AI will eventually perform most tasks currently done by humans, and stressed the need to build core products instead. Sharma also outlined a broader vision for the company — to move beyond its fintech roots and become an AI-first firm, according to an ET report. Although AI will automate several human functions, Sharma said it will also create fresh roles in the workforce. The remarks come at a time when Paytm's parent, One97 Communications, is undergoing job cuts. ET reported last month that the company had laid off an unspecified number of employees. The overall sales team headcount dropped by about 3,500 in the March 2024 quarter, taking the total to 36,521. This decline was largely linked to the Reserve Bank of India's restrictions on Paytm Payments Bank operations. In the March quarter, Paytm posted a consolidated net loss of Rs 540 crore, compared with Rs 550 crore in the year-ago period. In June, Paytm stood third in the UPI rankings with 1.27 billion transactions worth Rs 1.34 lakh crore — accounting for 6.9% of total volume and 5.6% of value. PhonePe remained in the lead with 8.55 billion transactions valued at Rs 11.99 lakh crore. As part of its AI initiatives, Sharma announced a new passbook feature that would use Paytm's data to generate a rap song summarising monthly expenses. Though no launch date has been shared, Sharma said it would be made available to users soon. Paytm had earlier partnered with US-based AI startup Perplexity to introduce AI-powered search capabilities in its app.
