New Delhi [India], July 14 (ANI): Union Minister and Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) chief Jitan Ram Manjhi on Monday drew a pointed comparison from the Mahabharata to address Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) leader Chirag Paswan's criticism of the law and order situation in Bihar. He said that young leaders sometimes fail to grasp the full complexity of governance.
Speaking to ANI, Manjhi said, 'Sometimes even trustworthy people don't understand the situation and make statements about it. Chirag Paswan is a good leader in the NDA, but he's young. Young people sometimes don't understand the nuances and make statements. Just like I said in a tweet today, Abhimanyu was described as a warrior and it was said that he would definitely break the Chakravyuh. He moved forward with all his might, but something was lacking - he didn't understand that he shouldn't have entered it like that.'
Manjhi was responding to Chirag Paswan's recent remarks amid rising incidents of violent crimes in Bihar, where the latter questioned how many more lives the people of the state would have to sacrifice.
Reacting to tweets and statements by RJD leaders, including Lalu Prasad Yadav and Tejashwi Yadav, Manjhi said,'Lalu Prasad Yadav has no right to speak on the law and order situation in Bihar. The law and order situation in Bihar is not as bad as in other states. Quick action is taken to control the law and order situation in Bihar. It seems that the incidents happening in Bihar right now are politically motivated. Why did such incidents not happen before?'
On the issue of NDA's pending seat-sharing formula for the upcoming Assembly elections and Chirag Paswan's earlier assertion that LJP(RV) is preparing to contest all 243 seats. 'I don't take his statement otherwise because every party works on the ground, not thinking they'll contest only two or three seats - they work for all the seats,' Manjhi said. (ANI)

We don't want confrontation with Telangana on river water sharing, says Naidu

A day after holding talks with Telangana over river water sharing, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Thursday asserted that there is no need for a confrontation with the neighbouring State and advocated for `give and take' policy to resolve the issues. 'Both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana should prosper and develop. Andhra Pradesh will bear the cost of repairs to the Srisailam Project plunge pool. I have asked Telangana to utilise the Godavari river waters, if needed, and asked it to cooperate with inter-linking of rivers,' Mr. Naidu said, addressing a gathering of water users associations and farmers at Malyala in Nandikotkur mandal of Nandyal district. Earlier, Mr. Naidu offered Jala Harathi and released water from the Malyala pump house into the Handri-Neeva Sujala Sravanthi canal which has been expanded within 100 days after commencing the works by the NDA government. Water to Rayalaseema Explaining his efforts to resolve water sharing issues, he said they have decided to establish the Godavari River Water Board in Hyderabad and the Krishna Board in Vijayawada. 'I want to provide water to every acre of land in Rayalaseema. Completion of the Vedavati project will provide water to Aluru, Adoni and Mantralayam Assembly Constituencies. We want to take water till Chittoor district. We will complete the Adivipalli reservoir and take water from Handri to Neeva branch canal,' he said. They will provide water to Chittoor next year, he added. 'The water that starts from the footsteps of Mallanna (Sri Bhramaramba Mallikarjuna swamy temple at Srisailam) will be taken to Venkanna (Lord Venkateswara temple at Tirumala) at Tirupati. This is not just inter-linking of rivers but also Gods. We will prepare plans accordingly,' he said. Industrial development Mr. Naidu said the party general secretary and IT Minister Nara Lokesh had released the Rayalaseema Declaration during his Yuvagalam Padayatra and the same will be implemented. 'People of Rayalaseema have elected us with huge margins and we will never forget the promises made to the region. We will develop the region industrially. We will commence Drone City in Orvakal of Kurnool district. We will set up High Court bench in Kurnool and also complete the Rayalaseema Steel Plant in Kadapa,' Mr. Naidu said. Taking potshots at the previous government, the Chief Minister said earlier schools were run without teachers while they have started recruitment of 16,000 teachers through DSC soon after coming to power. ''Similarly, we have come to the rescue of the mango farmers by providing ₹4 per kg support price and also purchased tobacco from farmers,' he said and added that the government would deposit Annadata Sukhibava financial assistance to farmers in three instalments. Mr. Naidu reiterated that the promise of free bus ride to women would also be fulfilled and they would also extend financial assistance to the unemployed as promised. The Chief Minister recalled launching the Handri-Neeva project in 1995 at Uravakonda, a 554-km-long canal many once called impossible. He highlighted sanctioning ₹3,890 crore for canal expansion, completed in just 100 days. Mr. Naidu promised that within 10-15 days, water will reach the last villages and all reservoirs in drought-prone Rayalaseema will be filled.

'Double standards': India rejects Nato chief's Russian oil remarks, says 'energy needs an overriding priority'

Earlier this week, Rutte referred to secondary tariffs that US lawmakers have been pushing for countries buying Russian oil and gas and urged countries like India to either convince Russia to stop attacks on Ukraine or be ready to be hit "very hard". Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal on Thursday said that India will continue to secure energy requirement of its irrespective of whatever anyone might say. He further flagged the double standards of the West in their narrative of the Indian purchase of Russian oil. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'Let me reiterate that securing energy needs of our people is understandably an overriding priority for us. In this endeavor, we ae guided by what is on offer in the markets, and by the prevailing global circumstances. We would particularly caution against any double standards on the matter,' said Jaiswal. For context, European nations that largely make up the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (Nato) have paid more money to Russia for energy imports than they have given to Ukraine in aid since the beginning of the Russia-Ukraine war in 2022. #WATCH | Delhi | On Nato chief Mark Rutte's comment that countries buying Russian oil could face secondary sanctions, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal says, "We have seen reports on the subject and are closely following the developments. Let me reiterate that securing the energy… — ANI (@ANI) July 17, 2025 Earlier this week, Rutte singled out India and said the failure to stop buying Russian oil could hit it 'in a massive way'. 'My encouragement to these three countries, particularly is, if you live now in Beijing, or in Delhi, or you are the president of Brazil, you might want to take a look into this, because this might hit you very hard. So please make the phone call to Vladimir Putin and tell him that he has to get serious about peace talks, because otherwise this will slam back on Brazil, on India and on China in a massive way,' said Rutte. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, India has ramped up the purchase of discounted Russian oil. Officials and commentators in the West have often criticised the Indian purchase of oil as they have accused India and other buyers like China of funding the Russian war. Energy exports, such as oil and gas, make up a huge chunk of Russian revenues that it uses to fund the war on Ukraine. However, these officials and commentators, such as Rutte, ignore the fact that European nations have also continued to buy Russian oil and gas. In fact, European nations have paid Russia more for such imports than they have given to Ukraine in aid. Consider this: Since 2022, the European Union (EU) has been the largest buyer of Russian liquified natural gas (51 per cent) and pipeline gas (37 per cent) and Turkey —a Nato member— has been the largest buyer of Russian oil products (26 per cent), according to the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA). STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD So far this year, EU members have bought €21.9 billion ($25.4 billion) of Russian oil and gas compared to €18.7 billion ($21.69 billion) that they have allocated in aid for Ukraine, according to estimates from the CREA. Moreover, since 2022, estimates have said that the EU members have paid $215–235 billion to Russia for oil, gas, and coal, compared to $200 billion that they have allocated and pledged to Ukraine in aid.

Execution of Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya in Yemen postponed after govt intervenes

'In the case of Ms. Nimisha Priya, it has been learnt that the local authorities in Yemen have postponed the execution scheduled for July 16, 2025,' the sources stated. According to the sources, the postponement provides additional time for her family to negotiate a mutually agreeable solution amidst ongoing diplomatic efforts by Indian officials as they maintained regular communication with Yemeni jail authorities and the prosecutor's office while navigating the sensitivities of the situation to secure this reprieve. Sanaa [Yemen]: The execution of 37-year-old nurse from Kerala, Nimisha Priya, which was scheduled for July 16 in Yemen has been postponed, following 'concerted efforts' by the Government of India, sources told ANI on Tuesday, citing local authorities. 'GOI, which has since the beginning of the case been rendering all possible assistance in the matter, has made concerted efforts in recent days to seek more time for the family of Ms. Nimisha Priya to reach a mutually agreeable solution with the other party. Despite the sensitivities involved, Indian officials have been in regular touch with the local jail authorities and the prosecutor's office, leading to securing this postponement,' it added. The 37-year-old nurse from Kerala was set to be executed on July 16 after a trial court in Yemen convicted her of killing a Yemeni national, a decision that the country's Supreme Judicial Council upheld in November 2023. Earlier on Monday, while giving the Union Government's submission on the case in the Supreme Court the Attorney General of India (AGI) stated that the Indian government is making every possible effort to help Priya. He further informed the Court that talks are ongoing with Yemeni authorities, including the public prosecutor handling Priya's case, to secure a suspension of the execution order until negotiations can be pursued. However, the AGI also admitted that the Indian government's ability to intervene is limited, describing it as 'a very complex issue', adding, 'there's no way we can know what's happening (in Yemen).' 'There's nothing much that we can do… It's not like any other part of the world (where possible negotiations can be carried out),' the AGI stated. Hearing the Central government's submission, Justice Sandeep Mehta expressed deep concern and remarked that it would be 'very sad if she (Priya) were to lose her life.'. The court will continue to hear the case on July 18. This report is auto-generated from PTI news service. ThePrint holds no responsibility for its content.
