Patrick Mahomes discusses interest in minority ownership of the Kansas City Chiefs

USA Today22-07-2025
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes recently spoke with CNBC Media & Sports Reporter Alex Sherman for the CNBC Sport videocast. He discussed his thoughts on a possible interest in minority ownership of the franchise after retirement.
"Yeah, I mean, hopefully, that's a long time from now when I retire. But I mean, that would obviously be cool. I mean, Kansas City and the Chiefs have done so much for me, so to be a part of them in any way would be really cool," said Mahomes, "And so I know they do the minority stakes and stuff like that now. I don't think the Chiefs have done that yet, so maybe down the line, but it'll be about 10,15 years from now, or whatever that is. And so hopefully they'll hold the space for me, because you only get a certain amount of minority stakes that they can sell."
Mahomes has consistently expressed interest in buying sports teams in the Kansas City area. He has stakes in the MLB's Kansas City Royals and the NWSL's Kansas City Current. The two-time NFL Most Valuable Player has also been prominent in pitches for a hopeful NBA or WNBA franchise in Kansas City.
"I think sports are something in this world that are not divisive as far as everybody wants their team to win and they want to go out there and just enjoy the time together." said Mahomes, "And so I love sports so much, and so I invested in all the sports in Kansas City because Kansas City has been great to me. And so it's really cool to go watch these games and have a rooting interest, more than just being a fan, but someone that is invested in the team. And it's made watching the games even more fun."
Mahomes has many playing seasons ahead of him, so he won't be focused on ownership for the immediate future.

Chiefs' Andy Reid Offers Major Injury Update on Hollywood Brown

Xavier Worthy, Skyy Moore, and Hollywood Brown all suffered injuries. Read more: Chiefs' Hollywood Brown Exits Practice on Cart With Apparent Injury The most significant of the bunch was Brown, who was shown leaving practice on a cart. Leaving on a cart is never a good sign, and now Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has offered a major update on the receiver's injury. Reid is referring to the ankle injury that Brown sustained. He also revealed that Worthy "banged his head," but there is no further information yet if the star receiver will be evaluated for a concussion. More news: Chiefs Practice Erupts in Fight as Rookie Star Throws Punch Moore was also revealed to have suffered a hamstring injury. Dealing with injuries is never a good thing, but to have three receivers be injured on the same day is quite concerning. It does sound like none of the injuries are severe, or severe enough that Reid had to withhold information. The issue is the ankle injury that Brown suffered and the hamstring injury Moore suffered could linger and lead to more time missed. The Chiefs dealt with plenty of injuries during the 2024 season, as Isiah Pacheco was lost for most of the season, as were Brown and Juju Smith-Schuster. Even with major injuries to the offensive playmakers on the team, Patrick Mahomes and company were still able to make it to the Super Bowl. The hope for 2025 is that the team would go into the start of the season unscathed, but that appears not to be the case. Brown suffered a sternoclavicular injury that led to him being ruled out for the entire 2024 season, though he was able to heal and return to the team for Weeks 16 and 17. He also participated in the playoffs and the Super Bowl. Despite coming back, another major injury might cause the Chiefs to move on from the wide receiver. This is just speculation, but two major injuries and more missed time could lead to Brown being waived. For now, it appears that his ankle injury might not be that serious, at least according to Reid. Chiefs' Hollywood Brown Exits Practice on Cart With Apparent Injury

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. During Tuesday's practice, both Xavier Worthy and Hollywood Brown were injured on separate plays. More news: Chiefs Practice Erupts in Fight as Rookie Star Throws Punch Worthy was shaken up after leaping for a catch and was seen limping to the sideline. However, he returned to join his teammates with his helmet on. The more concerning injury occurred with Brown, who had to be taken off the field in a cart. He was sitting in the front seat, though there is still major concern regarding the severity of the injury that he may have suffered. JACKSONVILLE, FL - AUGUST 10: Wide Receiver Hollywood Brown #5 of the Kansas City Chiefs warms up prior to a preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars at EverBank Stadium on August 10, 2024 in Jacksonville, Florida. The Jaguars defeated the Chiefs 26 to 13. Chiefs' Hollywood Brown has posted a new workout video indicating his return. More DonMore news: Patriots Get Massive Injury Update on All-Pro Christian Gonzalez Losing Brown for any period would be devastating, as the star receiver also missed the majority of the 2024 season. After the Chiefs signed Brown in free agency, he was slated to be the top offensive weapon for Patrick Mahomes. Sadly, Brown suffered a sternoclavicular injury that was reported to keep him sidelined for the entire 2024 season. He would eventually return and participate in Weeks 16 and 17, along with the playoffs and Super Bowl. After a shaky first year with the Chiefs, the hope would be that Brown could return to proper form in 2025. Now, he may have suffered a leg injury that could impact his 2025 season. If Brown suffered another injury that would keep him out for a large portion of the 2025 season, the Chiefs might have no choice but to waive the wide receiver. This is just speculation, but the team does need to bring in playmakers who can stay healthy. For now, the Chiefs will have to wait and see what the severity is regarding the injury that Brown sustained. Despite the lack of offensive weapons, the Chiefs were still able to make it to the Super Bowl in 2024. However, losing Brown or any number of offensive playmakers in 2025 might not warrant the same success. The good news is the Chiefs have Travis Kelce, Worthy, Isaiah Pacheco, and Kareem Hunt still on the team. There are plenty of playmakers for Mahomes to work with, should Brown be ruled out for an extended period. For more on the Chiefs and NFL, head to Newsweek Sports.

Chiefs Practice Erupts in Fight as Rookie Star Throws Punch

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Most NFL teams are engaging in practice with pads on, meaning there is going to be a far more physical nature for teams. The Kansas City Chiefs got a full taste of the more physical nature, as practice on Tuesday erupted into a fight. More news: Bears HC Ben Johnson Speaks Out Amid Concerns With Offense Josh Simmons**** (error on my part) — Mark Poulose (@MarkPoulose) July 29, 2025 In a video caught by Mark Poulouse, star rookie offensive lineman Josh Simmons got into a fight with Ashton Gillottee. After the play was done, the pair was seen adding more pushing and shoving. After Gillottee shoved Simmons, the OL threw a punch, which was fired back by Gillottee. The scuffle got more intense, leading to players jumping in. Poulouse also indicated that head coach Andy Reid ran over to stop the brawl from getting crazier. Head coach Andy Reid, left, speaks to assistant head coach and special teams coordinator Dave Toub of the Kansas City Chiefs during the second half of a game against the Las Vegas Raiders at Allegiant Stadium on January 07, 2023 in Las Vegas, Nevada. MoreMore news: Patriots Get Massive Injury Update on All-Pro Christian Gonzalez Simmons has been making plenty of headlines, and the rookie could be a star in the making. Multiple reports indicate that the Chiefs may have gotten a steal with Simmons, who is slated to protect the left side of the line. Players getting chippy is nothing new in the NFL, but fights generally happen during joint practices. Both Simmons and Gillottee are rookies and are likely to get an earful about respecting one another from Reid. Either way, it appears the Chiefs team is full of fire, which is never a bad thing. The team needs a boost in physicality, as the team was trounced by the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX. To make matters worse, the Chiefs lost Joe Thuney, who left in free agency. Thuney joined the Chicago Bears, leaving the Chiefs without a solid starter on the left side of the line. That is where Simmons is coming into play. He is turning heads in training camp and is already being spoken of in high regard, especially with the loss of Thuney. Now, Reid will need to ensure that more fights like this don't happen, especially if they end in one or both players getting injured. Though both players threw a punch in the fight caught on video, no one appeared to be hurt. The Chiefs are still the team to beat in the AFC, despite losing in such a way to the Eagles in the Super Bowl. With a new slate of rookies to mold, fights like this might still occur. It is up to the Chiefs' coaching staff to quell bigger fights before they become frequent. For more on the Chiefs and NFL, head to Newsweek Sports.
