Statewide school enrolment drive to begin June 26

Time of India24-06-2025
Gandhinagar: Gujarat govt's flagship school enrolment programme, Shala Praveshotsav, will be conducted across all districts from June 26 to 28, state govt spokesperson Rushikesh Patel said on Tuesday.
Over 400 senior govt officials will take part in the drive aimed to boost school admissions and reducing dropouts.
Patel highlighted the programme's impact, stating that Gujarat's school dropout rate has seen a steep decline over the years. "In 2001-02, the dropout rate stood at 20.5% for grades 1–5 and 37.22% for grades 1–8. By 2023-24, it dropped to 1.07% and 2.42%, respectively," he said.
This year's enrolment drive will place special emphasis on secondary and higher secondary levels to address dropout concerns in those segments.
For targeted enrolment, the health department's birth and vaccination data has been integrated with the education department's Child Tracking System (CTS) to identify eligible children.

To prevent potential dropouts, the education department is leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) and data analytics from the Vidya Samiksha Kendra. "Parents of at-risk students are being identified and personally approached to reinforce the importance of continuing education," Patel added.
The state aims to ensure universal school enrolment and sustained attendance through coordinated efforts across departments and innovative tech-driven interventions.

Lord Jagannath's 'Bahuda' Yatra: Chariot pulling begins

The Bahuda Yatra , or return car festival, of Lord Jagannath and his siblings formally commenced on Saturday in Puri, with devotees pulling the chariot of Lord Balabhadra's Taladwaj amid prayers, rituals, and heightened security following a recent stampede. Early chariot procession and devotional fervour Though scheduled for 4 p.m., the chariot procession began around 2:45 p.m. with chants of 'Jai Jagannath' and 'Haribol' and the rhythmic beating of cymbals. The chariots Taladwaj (for Lord Balabhadra), Darpadalan (for Devi Subhadra), and Nandighosh (for Lord Jagannath) were pulled in sequence, beginning with Taladwaj, followed by the chariots carrying Devi Subhadra and then Lord Jagannath. Pahandi ritual carried out ahead of schedule The Pahandi ceremony, which involves ceremonially carrying the deities to their chariots, began at 10 a.m.—two hours ahead of schedule. Initiated by Chakraraj Sudarshan, the ritual took about two hours to complete, during which the deities Balabhadra, Subhadra, and Jagannath were placed on their respective chariots. This was followed by customary Mangla Arati and Mailam rituals before the deities emerged from the sanctum sanctorum. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play War Thunder now for free War Thunder Play Now Undo Chhera Pahanra ritual performed by Gajapati Maharaja At 1:35 p.m., Gajapati Maharaja Divyasingha Deb performed the Chhera Pahanra (sweeping) ritual with a golden broom, first cleansing the Taladwaj chariot of Lord Balabhadra, then the Nandighosh chariot of Lord Jagannath, and finally the Darpadalan chariot of Devi Subhadra. Pakistan's development rests on backs of child labourers as 1.6 million children are exploited in Sindh

. Over 1.6 million children in Sindh, aged between five and 17 years, are trapped in child labour, according to the Sindh Child Labour Survey 2022-2024, as reported by Dawn. The survey, conducted by the provincial labour department with technical support from UNICEF and the Bureau of Statistics Sindh, paints a grim picture of child welfare in the province. According to Dawn, the survey found that 50.4 per cent of children aged 10-17 engaged in child labour were working under hazardous conditions, including long hours, exposure to extreme temperatures, and use of unsafe tools. These children face daily risks that threaten their physical and mental well-being. Labour Director General Muhammad Ali Shah, who served as the project director for the survey, told Dawn that while the overall incidence of child labour has declined by nearly 50 per cent compared to 1996, when 20.6 per cent of Sindh's child population was in labour, the sheer number of children still involved remains alarming. The survey also uncovered a stark divide in school attendance between working and non-working children. Only 40.6 per cent of children involved in labour attend school, compared to 70.5 per cent of their non-working peers. Attendance sharply declines as working children age, the report highlighted. According to Dawn, the burden is especially heavy for girls aged 14 to 17, who perform an average of 13.9 hours of household chores per week and face higher dropout rates. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Why seniors are rushing to get this Internet box – here's why! Techno Mag Learn More Undo Child labour remains strongly correlated with poverty, with 33.7 per cent of the poorest households reporting at least one child in labour. Furthermore, 20.1 per cent of working children reported symptoms of depression, nearly double the rate of children not involved in labour, noted the survey. The highest child labour rates were recorded in Qambar Shahdadkot (30.8 per cent), Tharparkar (29 per cent), Shikarpur (20.2 per cent), and Tando Muhammad Khan (20.3 per cent), with Karachi recording the lowest at 2.38 per cent, according to Dawn. The findings underscore the urgent need for targeted policy interventions and poverty alleviation to protect vulnerable children. Without decisive action, the cycle of exploitation, poor education, and mental distress will persist for millions across Sindh.
