New Delhi: Several important players were not included in India's 18-member squad for the five-Test tour in England starting from June 20. It's especially important to mention that Shreyas Iyer is not in the squad even after his impressive ODI and T20 form lately. Initially mum, Gautam Gambhir mentioned later that players who keep scoring will still be considered.
'Anyone can be called if they are in good form. We can only pick 18. But I believe it's always about being open to people who are in good form and can deliver,' Gambhir told reporters in Mumbai on Thursday.
Earlier, when Gambhir was asked about Shreyas' omission, Gambhir said, 'I'm not the selector'.
BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar commented on Shreyas Iyer during the team announcement:
'Yes, Shreyas Iyer has played well in domestic cricket, but at the moment, there is no room for him in the Test Team.'
During the 2025 season, Shreyas Iyer delivered great performances and became India's top scorer for the Champions Trophy win.
Iyer's show for Punjab Kings in IPL 2025 lived up to the expectations set by his big contract. He helped his team reach the final and was their best run-scorer, finishing with 604 runs in 17 games at a great strike rate of 175.
As given by the BCCI and ECB, the series will now be known as the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, paying homage to Sachin Tendulkar and James Anderson.

Watch: Akash Deep Shows Off Singing Skills With Bhojpuri Song, Video Goes Viral

Last Updated: India pacer Akash Deep, who is impressing in the Edgbaston Test against England, has gone viral in Bihar for singing a Bhojpuri song by Pawan Singh. News18 India pacer Akash Deep is impressing in England with his brilliant bowling performance in the second Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at Edgbaston. But back home, people are sharing videos of his other talents. Soon after he took two wickets on Day 4 of the Test on Saturday, a video of him singing a Bhojpuri song by popular singer-actor Pawan Singh has gone viral on X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram. In it, he can be seen in a function holding a microphone and impressing everyone with his skills. Akash is considered a good friend of Singh in Bihar. The duo has shared photos together previously. Coming in as a replacement to fill the big boots of Jasprit Bumrah, Akash picked up four wickets in England's first innings at Edgbaston. On Saturday, his two wickets were bowling opener Ben Duckett before doing the same to Joe Root with a ball-of-the-series contender that was angled in but seamed away to take out his off-stump. 'He is an attacking bowler that asks questions, bowling at the stumps a lot," India's bowling coach Morkel said after the day. 'I think that's one of the golden rules here in England: asking questions on the stumps. So for these sort of conditions in the UK, it suits his style. And coming back from injury and seeing him running in with high pace, it's a nice sign for us. 'That was a dream delivery… top quality player Joe Root and to dismiss him in that fashion just shows the quality of Akash, what he can do… The more confidence you give him, almost like there's a little bit more energy behind the ball and hopefully that delivery he will play over in his phone tonight, and then bring a couple more of those tomorrow," he added. India reduced England to 72/3 in their chase of 608 runs and will aim to wrap up the rest on Day 5 to level the series 1-1. First Published: July 06, 2025, 09:32 IST

Shubman Gill Reveals Father's Message After 269: 'He Told Me I Missed 300'

Last Updated: Shubman Gill's father Lakhwinder Singh was proud of his 269 but reminded him about him missing a 300! The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has shared a wholesome video of captain Shubman Gill's day out at Edgbaston on Thursday during the second Test between India and England in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Apart from the behind-the-scenes of his interactions with media and various fans on the ground and in the team hotel, it also revealed his parents, Lakhwinder Singh and Keart Gill's audio message for him. Gill smashed 269 (387) in India's first innings of the Test. It was not just his highest score but also the chart-topper for Indians in Tests outside Asia and for Indian captains, ever. Lakhwinder felt proud and peaceful at seeing his son's marathon knock, saying that it reminded him of his childhood days. However, Gill revealed that he also reminded him that the 25-year-old missed the chance to score a triple-century. 'Shubman beta, well played. I really enjoyed watching your batting. It gave me a lot of peace of mind. When you were younger, under 16 or 19, you used to bat like that. And I felt very proud," Lakhwinder can be heard saying in the video via Gill's phone. 'It was very nice to see your batting. Keep going. God bless you," Keart adds in the message. Gill spoke next and mentioned how much it means to him, given he started playing the sport for his father. 'I went to the pool for some recovery, came back, and showered… This message means a lot to me," he said. 'I think growing up, I played almost all of my cricket for my dad. In the sense that it was because of him that I started playing cricket. And the only person, he and my best friend, whom I practiced with. These are the only two people, when it comes to my cricket, that I care about and that I listen to. So, it means a lot coming from him. But he did also tell me that I missed my triple century. Hopefully, we will end this match on a great note," he added with a smile. Gill's knock helped India score 587/10 in the first innings. England were 77/3 at stumps.
