The issue was investigated and resolved. No further complaints of a similar nature have been reported from the affected locations.'

New Jerusalem seeks generous support this Mandela Month
This Mandela Month, the New Jerusalem Children's Home stands at the forefront of a powerful wave of generous donations, already propelled by a heartfelt contribution from Hyde Johannesburg Hotel Rosebank. As a long-established sanctuary for vulnerable children, the home provides essential love, shelter, and education. Read more: 67 Blankets and Cedar Lakes Estate donates blankets to New Jerusalem Children's Home However, with only 80 out of 120 children currently receiving funding from the Department of Social Development, the home faces significant challenges in meeting the increasing needs of its residents. Hopkins Kaira, the home's marketing manager, emphasised the importance of support during Mandela Month—a time when organisations and individuals mobilise resources to give back. 'In this month, we see many people and organisations stepping forward to help,' said Kaira. 'The home has expanded, and so have the needs—maintenance, school materials, uniforms, and everyday essentials, among others. The children deserve a safe and nurturing environment, and these donations directly contribute to that.' The home's wishlist for this Mandela Month is extensive and includes storybooks, fencing, gates, dustbins, furniture, paint, toiletries, food, cleaning supplies, and more. Moreover, volunteers are essential to the cause and are encouraged to lend their time and skills. 'Tasks like weed removal behind the centre and outdoor maintenance are crucial for creating a welcoming environment for our children,' Hopkins added. He also highlighted that the classroom project now only requires painting. Tshepiso Mofokeng from the Hyde Johannesburg Hotel noted the impactful early donation made on July 4, which effectively kicked off the month of giving. He said donating is part of their ethos, and they seized the opportunity to contribute well ahead of Mandela Day on July 18. 'New Jerusalem was introduced to us by one of our colleagues, who has been working closely with the home…We partnered with them in 2023 and have been consistently donating food. It's a heartwarming initiative, allowing us to engage with the children directly,' said Mofokeng. Those wishing to support the New Jerusalem Children's Home can reach out via 010 224 0458 or 082 732 7832, or email [email protected] or [email protected]. Read Midrand Reporter for more. Ekurhuleni families shattered after shack fire kills 4 children
The Mthabela and Shabalala families are grappling not only with unbearable grief but also with an overwhelming sense of guilt that threatens to consume them. Boksburg Advertiser reports that this is after they lost four children in a fire that engulfed two shacks in Villa Liza in Boksburg, Ekurhuleni, on June 27. The young victims were Anele Shabalala (14), Liyakha Shabalala (5) and brothers, Nkazimulo and Mfanelo Shabalala, aged four. Nomfundo Shabalala, their older sister, recalled the fateful evening through tears. 'My mom and I weren't home when the fire started. Only my dad was there, but he'd gone out to buy food during load-shedding. 'My 16-year-old sister went to look for him because he'd been gone a while and the little ones were hungry. 'We were called in a panic and rushed back, but by the time we got there, both shacks were already in flames. We suspect it was a candle. There was no water to stop the fire.' She says no one from the Mthabela household was home at the time of the fire. 'We keep asking ourselves if we could have done something differently. Should someone have stayed behind? Why didn't we check on them more often? The 'what-ifs' echo in our minds every minute.' She says her father, who had gone to buy food, is especially burdened by guilt. 'He keeps reliving the moment he saw the fire, with neighbours trying to help, but it was already too late. He feels he failed his children.' Their older sister, who went to look for our father, is also struggling. 'She feels responsible for leaving the younger ones alone, even though she had no choice. She keeps wondering if she could have done more to save them.' Shabalala explains that two of the children were visiting from KZN for the school holidays. 'They came to visit for the holidays. They were such happy children; full of life, love and laughter.' Support for the families Dawn Park CPF and NGOs have mobilised to provide counselling and other forms of assistance to the grieving families. Bianca Zambetti, CPF chairperson, says they've arranged trauma counselling and emotional support. 'We're also doing everything we can to help rebuild the family's homes and provide them with food and clothing.' To assist the family, contact 071 166 6574.
