Court fines 10 people for using false documents to get MyKad, birth certificates

KUALA LUMPUR: Ten individuals were fined between RM700 and RM2,000 each by the magistrate's court here today for providing false information to the National Registration Department (NRD) to obtain birth certificates and identity cards.
All of them, aged between 55 and 69, pleaded guilty to the charge which was read out in separate magistrate's courts before Magistrates Atiqah Mohamed @ Mohamad Saim, Illi Marisqa Khalizan, M.S Arunjothy, Aina Azahra Ariffin, Farah Nabihah Muhammad Dan and S. Mageswary.
Nine of them, all men, namely Chok Tin Yong, Theng Lee Ping, Chia Chin Tong, Douglas Chan Chung Lei, K.K. Thangarajoo, Mohamed Agbal Ibrahim, Yong Chin Heng, Lim Kok Boon and S'ng Peng Tiong, were charged with knowingly submitting false information when applying for the birth registration of nine babies at several NRD counters in the federal capital from 2004 to 2022.
They were charged under Section 36(b) of the Births and Deaths Registration Act 1957, which provides a maximum fine of RM2,000 and imprisonment for up to 12 months or both, if convicted.
Theng and another accused, Gelam Fatimah Meer Ahmad, also pleaded guilty to a charge of applying for an identity card using a birth certificate containing false information at NRD counters in the capital between 2004 and 2022.
The charge, under Regulation 25(1)(b) of the National Registration Regulations 1990 (Amendment 2007), provides for a maximum prison sentence of three years or a fine not exceeding RM20,000 or both, if convicted.
The prosecution was conducted by NRD prosecuting officers Mohd Khairul Afizi Yusof, Zulkarnain Ahmad, Md Shahedan Md Taib, Mazrul Azli Matrus, Tengku Hazmi Taqiuddin Tengku Ab Aziz, Nor Zarina Zakaria, Nurul Nadiah Zainal Abidin, Mohd Ramzi Adnan and Arief Khairee Khairuddin, while some of the accused were represented by lawyers from the National Legal Aid Foundation.

In a statement today, state police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said the reports were lodged in Gombak and Shah Alam involving two victims, namely local women in their 40s. 'The first victim is the owner of a company who knew the suspect, a local man in his 30s known as an independent preacher in 2020. "The suspect deceived the victim, regarding the building of a religious school believed to be located in Selangor, to make three money deposit transactions totalling RM60,000 from August to September 2020," he said. As for the second victim, Hussein said the woman had made a payment of RM80,000 sometime around 2019. Hussein said the suspect used the name of a religious institution to gain trust until the victims handed over the money to the suspect to build the religious school. He reminded the public to always be vigilant against any requests for donations or investments that cannot be verified, especially those involving religious and educational institutions. "Avoid making financial transactions through personal accounts or companies that are not legally registered," he said. Yesterday, Shah Alam district police chief ACP Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim was reported to have said that his team is investigating a case involving the dissemination of pornographic videos by an independent preacher.

KUALA LUMPUR: Two women lost a total of RM140,000 after they were deceived by a freelance preacher into contributing to the development of a religious school in Selangor. Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said the state Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) received reports from the two women, both in their 40s and owners of a company. Initial investigations revealed that the victims had become acquainted with the suspect, a local man in his 30s who was known to them as a freelance preacher in 2020, he said. "The suspect deceived the victims by claiming the money was for the development of a religious school, believed to be located in Selangor. "The first victim made three money transfers amounting to RM60,000 between August and September 2020, while the second victim made a payment of RM80,000 in 2019," he said in a statement today. Hussein said the suspect's modus operandi involved using the name of a religious institution to gain the victims' trust, ultimately convincing them to hand over funds for the school's development. He added that two investigation papers have been opened under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. "Police would like to remind the public to always be cautious of donation or investment requests that cannot be properly verified, especially those involving religious or educational institutions.

KOTA BARU: The Southeast Brigade of the General Operations Force (GOF) seized a lorry carrying 4,000 bougainvillaea saplings, worth RM470,000, during an inspection along Jalan Bukit Lata, near Jeram Perdah, Pasir Mas, on Saturday (July 5). Its commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid (pic) said that the seizure was made by a team from the 3rd Battalion while conducting Ops Taring Wawasan Kelantan at about 10.10am. "An inspection of the lorry led to the discovery of the ornamental plants. The 35-year-old lorry driver was believed to be on his way to deliver the plants to a local nursery when he was arrested," he said in a statement on Sunday. The seized plants were believed to contain pests and diseases, he added. "The seized items have been handed over to the Kelantan Agriculture Department for further action. The case is being investigated under Section 6 of the Plant Quarantine Act 1976," he said. He added that the authorities would continue to strengthen monitoring and enforcement efforts to curb activities which could threaten the country's agricultural security. - Bernama
