New border agency boss hopes to make impact within a year
KUALA LUMPUR: Newly-appointed Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) director-general Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain has vowed to make the agency more impactful and visible within a year. 'We want to ensure the agency is visible and has an impact on society within a year,' he told reporters after clocking in at the agency's headquarters yesterday. Comm Mohd Shuhaily said his contract was for two years. 'If you break it down into quarters, I have eight quarters to fulfil my responsibility at the agency. 'Today, the beginning is my 'Alif', and what I will do throughout these eight quarters is my 'Lam', and where I will go after that is my 'Mim',' he said, referring to the Quran verse 'Alif Lam Mim'. Before clocking in, Comm Mohd Shuhaily said he met Home Ministry secretary-general Datuk Awang Alik Jeman. 'He gave several mandates to fulfil, including settling several administrative issues as soon as possible,' he said. Comm Mohd Shuhaily also saluted journalists who supported him all these years. 'Even though I have been transferred to a new department, they still show their loyalty. Earlier, Comm Mohd Shuhaily officially clocked in as the new AKPS director-general. He was welcomed by AKPS' top leadership, including deputy director-general Ismail Mokhtar. Comm Mohd Shuhaily, who is the former Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director, arrived at the agency's headquarters at about 9.15am yesterday. He later chaired a meeting with AKPS' top leadership and was briefed on issues concerning the agency. His appointment is from July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2027. Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar expressed confidence that Comm Mohd Shuhaily, 53, who has 28 years of experience in the police force, would be able to lead AKPS with distinction. 'This confidence is based on Comm Mohd Shuhaily's competence and extensive experience in various units in the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), both at the national and international levels. 'His leadership is also expected to further strengthen the country's border security and uphold a culture of integrity in line with the Madani values,' he added. Comm Mohd Shuhaily graduated with a Bachelor of International Relations from the International Islamic University Malaysia and has a Master of Science in Strategic Studies from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He previously served in Washington, United States, as a police attaché from 2010 to 2013. He was appointed as Bukit Aman CID director on Aug 15, 2023.
