4 persons arrested for taking money from NEET aspirants for medical college seat
The four persons including two from Odisha were arrested by Bhubaneswar Special Crime Unit on Saturday, Commissioner of Police, S D Singh said.

The Police commissioner said the gang used to take money from medical aspirants by promising them admission to medical colleges. The gang had plans to engage dummy candidates to write the examination, Singh said.
The National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) UG-2025 will be held on Sunday from 2 pm to 5 pm.
The four arrested persons were identified as Priyadarshi Kumar from Jharkhand, Arvind Kumar from Bihar, and Sunil Samantray and Rudra Narayan Behera from Odisha, police said.
"The modus operandi involved local scouts who procured NEET aspirant details, including Aadhaar cards, facilitating their registration. Once the admit cards are obtained, they are transferred to operatives in Bihar. It is suspected that proxy candidates take the NEET exam by manipulating the admit card details," a statement issued by police said.
The gang was charging ₹20 to ₹30 lakh per candidate, it said.

C'garh cops ‘kidnapped' 8 Nadia workers: Mahua
Kolkata: Eight construction workers from Nadia, engaged by a Chhattisgarh-based private construction agency to work in Bastar's Kondagaon, had been "kidnapped" by Chhattisgarh police on July 12 and put in Jagdalpur prison, Trinamool's Krishnanagar MP Mahua Moitra alleged on Monday. Moitra said the workers' phones were switched off and the families had lost contact with them. The MP said these extra-judicial detentions took place despite the eight having valid Aadhaar and EPIC cards. In a statement on X, Moitra said: "They have been sent to prison under 128 BNSS, earlier 109 CrPC, which allows cops to act if they suspect anyone is hiding to avoid committing a cognizable offence. But the legal provisions stipulated have been completely ignored, no hearings were given. The police detained them on July 12, and now they are in prison." Moitra said the SP — who is from Andhra and working in Chhattisgarh — could not respond to her queries. Moitra also posted the police verification reports of the eight detainees. Officers from Nadia's Thanarpara police station, under whose jurisdiction the eight live, have testified that they checked the EPIC and Aadhaar cards of all eight workers, and they were all Indian citizens. "Which law allows police to detain people who are Indian citizens to work anywhere in India?" the MP said.

Farmer bids suicide afterland ruling
Lucknow: A farmer from Parsa village under Safdarganj police station in Barabanki district allegedly attempted suicide by consuming a poisonous substance after being distressed over a land inheritance order passed in haste by an acting tehsildar. The incident prompted sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) of Sirauli Gauspur to order a review of the order and ensure the farmer received medical treatment on Monday. Farmer Lallaram was reportedly upset after the tehsildar issued an order on July 11 in a property dispute case despite the next date for the online hearing scheduled for July 14. His son alleged the acting tehsildar passed the order without hearing their side. The move, he said, caused emotional trauma to his father, leading him to consume poison on July 12. According to complainant Shamsher Verma, his uncle Balgovind passed away on March 6, 2024. Subsequently, a woman named Guna from Gonda, who allegedly changed her Aadhaar details to claim herself as Balgovind's wife Sheetladei alias Guna, filed for inheritance of his property before the tehsildar court. The court ruled in her favour.

BSP neta's daughter, youth found dead in Ayodhya hotel
Ayodhya: In a suspected case of murder-suicide, daughter of a Bahujan Samaj Party functionary was shot dead by her 22-year-old 'friend', who then turned the weapon on himself. Their bodies were found in a locked room at a homestay near Devkali bypass in Ayodhya on Sunday evening. The woman was identified as Aroma Rawat and the youth as Ayush Kumar Gupta. Police said the duo had checked into the homestay around 10:10am on Sunday and was allotted room number 103 on the second floor. Around 5pm, a waiter knocked at their door to deliver tea, but received no response. The homestay owner alerted police. A team led by circle officer, Ayodhya, Ashutosh Tiwari, arrived and broke open the door. Both the victims were lying on the bed with gunshot wounds on their foreheads. A pistol was found near Ayush's leg with two cartridges on the floor. Forensic experts and SP (city) Chakrapani Tripathi also reached the spot on receiving the news, and collected evidence. Police ruled out the possibility of third-party involvement, as the room was locked from inside. Aroma was the daughter of Barabanki BSP district president KK Rawat and was a nursing student in Ayodhya. Police are now questioning a man named Murari Yadav, who contacted authorities claiming to know Aroma.
