RMC cracks down on illegal hoardings at city junctions
Notably, TOI highlighted the menace on May 28 through a report titled 'Hoardings, a safety hazard, block line of sight for drivers'.
As part of the operation, a dedicated team of officials and field staff inspected key stretches from Kutchery Chowk, Jail Chowk, Circular Road and Lalpur Chowk to Dangratoli Chowk. During the drive, a total of 15 hoardings were found to be installed illegally and were dismantled on the spot by the RMC team.
In a specific instance, two hoardings installed by an ad agency were found placed away from the designated location, one above a drain and the other near an electric transformer, posing both environmental and safety hazards. Both were removed immediately.
Additionally, at Jail Chowk, civic officials noticed preparations being made for the installation of a monopole hoarding without prior approval. A base structure was already constructed, which was promptly demolished as part of the enforcement action.

RMC assistant administrator Nikesh Kumar said, "Such inspections and removals will continue across our jurisdiction in the coming days. Strict action will be taken against agencies or individuals violating advertisement norms."
He added, "We are pushing efforts for cleaner and regulation-compliant urban spaces, especially in high-traffic areas where unauthorised hoardings not only violate norms but also obstruct visibility and endanger public safety."

Omar, who is a respected Sufi scholar in Yemen, had visited Kanthapuram's Markazu Saquafathi Sunniyya to attend a function. Sources said a dialogue with the victim's family became possible and the presence of various stakeholders, including tribal leaders, is seen as a positive step in the highly-sensitive Mahdi murder case among northern Yemen's tribal groups. Nimisha, a native of Kollengode in Palakkad, was accused of murdering Talal Abdo Mahdi with whom she had started a health clinic in Sana'a. She allegedly chopped his body and dumped the parts in a water tank. Mahdi had reportedly tortured her and illegally seized her passport which allegedly led to the murder. A trial court sentenced her to death in 2018 and an appeals court later upheld the sentence. The lack of formal diplomatic ties with Yemen's Houthi militants posed an issue in securing her release. While Houthi militias control Sana'a, the rest of the country is governed by the internationally recognized Saudi-backed govt and the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council. The Yemeni embassy in Delhi represents the Saudi-backed govt and has no official ties with Houthis.

Delivery truck used as cover for burglary; 3 held
Kochi: City police on Tuesday detained three members of an inter-state burglary gang following a tip-off from Tamil Nadu police. The accused, from Rajasthan and Haryana, allegedly stole a car in Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu and abandoned it before entering Kerala, police said. The suspects have been identified as Saikul (32) from Bharatpur, Rajasthan; Najeer (33) from Mewat, Haryana; and Sadam (38) from Nuh, Haryana. They were reportedly using a delivery service as a front to commit thefts and had travelled to Kochi to deliver air-conditioning components. The truck they arrived in was intercepted around 3am in the Panangad police station limits, after Tamil Nadu police alerted Kerala authorities that a truck carrying a stolen car was headed towards Kochi. While the truck did not contain the car, police found AC components and during a detailed inspection, discovered a hidden compartment with a gas cutter and burglary tools. Drama unfolded at the Panangad police station when one of the accused requested to use the toilet and escaped through a window. He was later caught from a nearby marsh. Man gets life imprisonment for killing his wife for dowry
1 2 Kanpur: Additional sessions judge, Kanpur Nagar Sudama Prasad on Tuesday sentenced Ganesh Nishad to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on charges of murdering his wife. The court also noted in its order that if the fine was paid and an appeal was made in the high court, then, depending on the outcome of the appeal, fifty percent of the fine amount would be given to the complainant. The time already served by the accused in jail during the trial would be counted towards the sentence. According to ADGC Pradeep Kumar Sahu, Rajjan Kushwaha had lodged an FIR at Nawabganj police station on March 24, 2020 stating that he had married his daughter Uma to Ganesh Nishad on February 10, 2015, providing a dowry of Rs 2.5 lakh. Ganesh was not satisfied with this and demanded an additional Rs 2 lakh as dowry. On March 24, 2020, Ganesh killed Uma by hitting her on the head with bricks. Her body was found in the courtyard, and Ganesh was apprehended at the scene. The judge in his order observed that there was no eyewitness in this case, and since the incident had occurred inside the house, the accused's family members would naturally support him. In another case, a husband named Manoj Singh Kachwaha and his mother Tara Devi were convicted by an additional session judge, Kanpur Nagar, Kanchan Sagar, for dowry death on Tuesday. Manoj Kumar was sentenced to 10 years' rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs 15,000, while Tara Devi received seven years' rigorous imprisonment and a Rs 15,000 fine. Both were acquitted of charges under section 30 IPC and section 3 of the Anti-Dowry Act. It was also directed that time served in jail during the trial be accounted for in their sentences. According to ADGC Ravindra Awasthi, Amarpal Singh Chandel, uncle of the deceased Milan in his FIR lodged at the police station, alleged that Milan had been married to Manoj Singh of village Kadari in 2017. Manoj and his mother demanded a TV, fridge, and plot as dowry and allegedly tortured Milan to press their demands. In an attempt to appease them, Amarpal executed a will in their favour. On the night of December 15, 2023, he received news that Manoj's house was locked and the family had absconded after killing Milan. Upon reaching the house, Milan was found dead on a cot.
