In South Korea, mother's murder of daughter lays bare deepening debt crisis

A woman in South Korea who killed her adult daughter after believing their family would never be able to pay off debts has been sentenced to 15 years in jail by the appellate court – up from an original 12 years behind bars. The Korea Herald on Wednesday reported that Gwangju High Court upheld the woman's conviction while imposing a heavier sentence on the accused, 60, who murdered her daughter, 33, on February 12, 2023. The accused reportedly drugged her daughter and strangled her to death out of despair over a debt of 300 million won (US$217, 556) from the older woman's restaurant business, with up to 60 million won under the victim's name. The prosecution sought a heavier sentence, arguing the initial 12-year jail time was too lenient for the crime, adding: 'The young daughter had dreams and she would've wanted to live, even if she had debt because of her mother.' Delivering its ruling, the high court stated: 'The defendant took the life of her family for an unacceptable reason of 'psychological pressure for the victim.' This is unacceptable.' Malaysian security guard counts cost of viral knockout by MMA coach: ‘I was embarrassed'

A security guard in a block of flats in Malaysia thought he had the upper hand when he challenged a resident smaller than him, not realising the man he had picked on was a mixed martial arts (MMA) coach. Not only did Muhammad Alim Muhamad Adnizam, 24, end up having to get stitches, he had to watch his embarrassing knockout go viral. In addition, he was reassigned to another building and counted himself lucky he did not lose his job, the New Straits Times newspaper reported on Tuesday. In the video of the street brawl on July 10, Alim can be seen aggressively provoking another man, later identified as 22-year-old amateur MMA fighter Tony Lim, to a fight. 'Are you a boy or a girl? Hit me if you're a man,' he taunts Lim, even striking his own head at one point and calling Lim a pondan (transvestite). While Lim appears calm at first, Alim then starts taking off his watch and clothes – an indication that he is ready to fight. As punches are thrown, Lim acts quickly and subdues Alim in a chokehold but is told by another security guard to let Alim go. Alim picks himself up and challenges Lim to continue fighting but is knocked out in one punch, which sends him reeling against a metal pole. Lim told The Rakyat Post news portal on Thursday that the ill feelings started about two weeks before the fight, when he intervened to help an elderly resident who was being attacked by Alim.

LA nightclub crash: driver charged with 37 counts of attempted murder

The driver accused of ramming his car into a crowd outside a Los Angeles nightclub over the weekend was charged with 37 felony counts of attempted murder, prosecutors said on Tuesday. Fernando Ramirez, 29, was also charged with 37 felony counts of assault with a deadly weapon. If convicted, he could face multiple sentences of life imprisonment. Ramirez is accused of intentionally driving his car onto the pavement as party-goers were leaving the Vermont Hollywood venue at the end of a reggae hip-hop event early on Saturday. The motive for the attack, which injured 37 people, was still unknown. A phone number for Ramirez could not be found in an online database search, and the public defender's office said they have not been appointed to represent him. 'When he drove that car onto that pavement, he aimed it at a whole sea of pedestrians,' LA County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said in announcing the charges.
