Multiple news outlets in the U.S. identified the 13-year-old victim as Jerilynn Brown. The teen had been battling osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer, for two years and was reportedly discharged from Children's Mercy Hospital late last month.

'She just rang the bell,' Jerilynn's father Jerry Brown told KMBC. 'And a month later, here we are, and I'm talking about my baby girl.' Jerilynn's mother, Liz Stephens, is in the hospital and fighting for her life due to injuries sustained in the house fire, Jerilynn's stepfather Stephen Miller said.

'Jerrilynn was a bright, brave, and beautiful soul who had just overcome a long battle with cancer only two weeks prior,' reads a GoFundMe set up for the family. 'Her strength and spirit touched everyone who knew her. To have her taken so suddenly after all she had endured is beyond heartbreaking.' The campaign, with a goal of US$11,000, aims to raise funds for the family to cover funeral and medical expenses.

'To see a young girl who just beat cancer to have to have it end like this. I'm speaking on all of our folks our heart goes out and we are all very upset about this as well,' Independence Fire Chief Jimmy Walker told Fox 4.

Authorities said the fire originated on the covered back deck at the residence. Walker also said the smoke alarms inside the home weren't working. 'While they don't extinguish fires they do alert you in early stages of fires to let you get out and stay out and they do save lives,' Walker said, Fox 4 reports.

No major incidents during Vancouver fireworks festival, police say

While hundreds of thousands of people descended on Vancouver's English Bay for the annual Celebration off Light, the event came and went without any major hitches, according to police. The fireworks festival concluded with an explosive performance from Team Nova Scotia on Saturday. The usually international competition was an all-Canadian affair this year, with Team Quebec lighting up the sky last Wednesday and Team Yukon the previous weekend. 'Logistically, this is very challenging series of events of us, due to the volume of people on land, the number of vessels in the water, the expansive road closures, and the number of extra officers we need to deploy,' Sgt. Steve Addison of the Vancouver Police Department told CTV News in a statement. 'This has all taken on extra significance following the Lapu Lapu attack.' Security was front of mind for festival organizers in the wake of the deadly SUV ramming that shocked the city in April. Steel barriers went up to block cars from entering the most crowded areas, and an additional 400 police officers were on the streets on fireworks nights. 'We've been doing heavy vehicle barriers and other mitigation measures for many years,' Paul Runnals, the event's executive producer, told CTV News earlier this month. 'It's not new to us. We're enhancing it this year based on the learnings from April, but really it's an extension of what we've been doing for a long time.' Police did have to deal with the usual fare of children getting separated from their parents, drunk people and 'physical confrontations' during the event, Addison said. 'By and large, it was a safe and successful three nights with no major public safety incidents at the waterfront.' The winner of the competition will be revealed on Tuesday.

Relatives, authorities ask for public's help with investigation of Ole Miss player's fatal shooting

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Authorities on Monday asked for members of the public to provide surveillance footage and details from eyewitnesses as they investigate the fatal shooting of an Ole Miss freshman football player in a Memphis neighborhood after a pool party. Corey Adams, an 18-year-old defensive lineman from New Orleans, was found with a gunshot wound inside a vehicle at an intersection in the Memphis suburb of Cordova on Saturday night, said Anthony Buckner, chief deputy of the Shelby County Sheriff's Office. Adams died at the location of the shooting. Four other men who suffered gunshot wounds that were not life-threatening arrived at nearby hospitals in personal vehicles. Three of them had been released from the hospital as of Monday afternoon, Buckner said. The shooting happened after a pool party attended by about 100 people, including Adams, Buckner said during a news conference. About 40 rifle and pistol casings were found at the shooting scene. No arrests have been made. Buckner asked members of the public who may have information useful to investigators, including surveillance footage from video cameras at neighbors' homes, to come forward. 'We have far more questions right now than we have answers,' Buckner said. 'We know people saw something or heard something.' Adams, who played at Edna Carr High School in New Orleans, is listed on the Ole Miss football website as a 6-foot-4-inch, 235-pound defensive end. He had been one of the top defensive lineman recruits in the country. Adams' mother, who spoke at the news conference but declined to be named for fear of retribution, said Adams was a loving son and brother who had hopes of playing in the NFL. He had time off from practice and went to Memphis to enjoy himself, she said. Memphis is about 85 miles (135 kilometers) north of Oxford, Mississippi, where Ole Miss is located. The Edna Karr Cougars said in a Facebook post that 'words can't describe this type of pain.' 'Corey Adams was more than a football player! He was a friend, brother, son, student, and all around great young man,' the team stated. 'We never question God but this is one we just don't understand.' ___ AP college football: and
