Grab Malaysia's EV Service Launch To Boost Country's Mobility, Sustainability Agenda
SEPANG, June 24 (Bernama) -- The introduction of electric vehicle (EV) services specifically for e-hailing by Grab Malaysia is expected to improve the quality of the transportation system at the country's main entry points, thus supporting the sustainable mobility agenda in line with national aspirations.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the ministry (MOT) fully supports Grab Malaysia's initiative and is committed to expediting the country's transition to a cleaner, more efficient and environmentally friendly transportation system.
Grab Malaysia today also launched its 'EV-only ride' services as a booking option in the Grab application, and also set up an EV Lounge at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), as an added convenience for users of its premium EV services.
'The selection of KLIA as the launch location is very strategic, not only because of the high passenger traffic but also because it provides maximum exposure to domestic and international users regarding Malaysia's efforts to enhance green mobility,' he said.
Speaking at the Grab EV launch here today, Loke said that public-private collaboration is the key to successfully accelerating the use of EVs nationwide.
According to him, the launch of Grab Malaysia's new initiative is a catalyst to expanding EVs nationwide, not just in the Klang Valley, but also in other major cities such as Johor Bahru, Penang, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu.
'The latest MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) between Grab and several strategic partners, including EV providers and charging companies recently, reflects the conformity of the industry with the country's aspirations.
'The MOT will continue to support such efforts and we urge more industry players to step forward and play their part in the country's decarbonisation agenda,' he said.
Through the National Transport Policy 2019-2030 and the Ministry of Transport Strategic Plan 2021-2025, Loke said electric vehicles have been identified as one of the main pillars to reducing carbon emissions and encouraging the use of green technology.

Consumer group seeks clear guidelines on reporting reckless driving safely
David Chan KOTA KINABALU (June 28): The National Consumer Foundation Malaysia (Sabah Chapter) appreciates the recent remarks by Transport Minister Anthony Loke, encouraging the public to record and report incidents of reckless driving involving buses and lorries. This proactive call to public participation is commendable and timely, said chairman of the consumer group, David Chan. However, he said many responsible motorists have voiced valid concerns: 1. How can ordinary drivers safely take photos or record videos of dangerous bus or lorry drivers while driving without risking a traffic offence themselves? The public is uncertain whether such actions, even when done with good intentions, may violate traffic laws. 2. Use of Mobile Phones While Driving: It is well known that the Road Transport Department (JPJ) strictly prohibits the use of handphones while driving, and such usage may result in a summons or compound fine, as it poses serious risks to road safety. 3. Risk of Road Accidents: Attempting to photograph or record reckless drivers while in motion may distract motorists, potentially causing accidents or putting lives in danger, especially on highways or narrow roads. In light of the above, the National Consumer Foundation calls upon Loke and the Ministry of Transport to issue a clear guideline on: When and how the public can legally and safely capture footage of reckless commercial vehicle drivers; Whether dashcams and passenger-recorded videos are the recommended method for gathering such evidence; Whether such evidence will be officially accepted by JPJ and APAD for enforcement actions. 'We support the Transport Minister's call for public engagement in enhancing road safety. However, it must be done without compromising legal compliance or public safety. 'We urge the ministry to consider launching a nationwide awareness campaign, encouraging the use of safe recording tools such as dashcams and providing proper reporting channels such as a mobile app or online platform,' said Chan in a statement on Saturday. 'We believe consumer safety on Malaysian roads is a shared responsibility. While enforcement authorities must act firmly against rogue drivers and negligent transport operators, the public should be empowered — not penalized — for doing the right thing,' he added.

Proton, Grab Malaysia expand partnership with more car models and e-hailing perks
KUALA LUMPUR: Proton Holdings Bhd and Grab Malaysia have expanded their partnership to offer more car models, including the Proton S70 and X-Series, with added benefits for Grab drivers. In a statement, Proton said the partnership builds on the success of the 'Saga Power Up for Grab Driver-Partners' campaign launched in November 2024, which has so far generated 220 leads and resulted in 148 Proton Saga registrations. The continued collaboration underscores the strong demand for Proton's models in the e-hailing segment and reinforces the shared goal of modernising Malaysia's ride-hailing with affordable and reliable cars. Driver-partners can now choose from a wider range of Proton models, including GrabCar Plus and GrabCar (6-Seater) options. The partnership also offers up to RM13,000 in cash rebates, a 5% service discount for two years or 40,000 km, and RM500 in fuel support to ease initial ownership costs. 'Our strengthened partnership with Grab Malaysia marks a crucial step in empowering the e-hailing sector. Proton is thrilled to make our S70 and premium X-series models more accessible to Grab drivers. 'For gig workers, this comprehensive programme extends beyond exclusive benefits to assurance of driving Proton cars. Its reliability and affordable maintenance costs are important factors for those who use cars as their primary working tools,' Proton Edar deputy director sales, Ong Chee Wooi said. Meanwhile, Grab Malaysia's director of country operations and mobility, Rashid Shukor, said this collaboration made it easier for its driver-partners to access vehicles, enabling them to earn and support their families while meeting the growing demand for rides. 'With the expansion of our partnership – now extending to the S70 and premium X-series models —drivers now have the chance to elevate their driving experience, upgrade their vehicles, and cater to an even broader consumer base. We look forward to continuing this journey together to build a future where opportunities are accessible to all."

Can you hail a Grab EV outside KLIA? It's luck of the draw, but here's how
KUALA LUMPUR, June 27 — As the Grab EV service is only meant for KLIA Terminal 1 rides at the moment, we were originally under the impression that the Grab EV drivers have to come back to KLIA empty-handed once they have their passengers to the destination. As it turns out, that is not the case, as Grab EV drivers can pick up KLIA-bound customers when they head back to the airport. 'So, we don't want them to come back empty,' said Rashid Shukor, Director of Country Operations and Mobility of Grab Malaysia. Rashid pointed out that customers who booked the Standard 6-seater service might be able to obtain Grab EV's BYD M6 electric MPV, as long as their destination is KLIA. However, the M6 will be assigned randomly to customers just like any other 7-seater vehicle in the service. This is unlike in KLIA Terminal 1, whereby you can specifically choose between the Grab EV or the usual Standard 6-seater service. Aside from getting the BYD M6 as their ride, Grab EV customers also get to enjoy several perks, including having their pick-up point at Level 3, which is the same floor as the airport's arrival hall. For the Standard 6-seater customers, the pick-up point is located at Level 1 instead. In addition to that, there is also a dedicated waiting area in the form of the Grab EV Lounge near the pick-up point. That being said, the Grab EV service does cost slightly more than the Standard 6-seater option, although the fare differences depend on the destination. As a comparison, the Grab EV service costs RM28 more than its Standard 6-seater counterpart when we set our Bukit Bintang office as the destination. However, when we set Ayer@8 in Presint 8 of Putrajaya as the destination which is much closer to KLIA, the difference was only RM5. — SoyaCincau
