Coimbatore: AIADMK general secretary
Edappadi K Palaniswami
on Tuesday said the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) was very strong in Tamil Nadu and the alliance would form govt in the state by winning 210 seats in the 2026 assembly election.
He praised the BJP govt at the Centre for allocating Rs63,000 crore to implement the metro rail project in Chennai when the AIADMK was governing the state. "We (AIADMK) could get many schemes with the help of the central govt in the future. Without the Centre's support, Tamil Nadu wouldn't have achieved all the growth it sees today."
On the second day of political campaigning, which was held at Vadavalli, EPS said the previous AIADMK govt had implemented various schemes, especially Smart City and Pillur-III drinking water, in Coimbatore.
"However, the DMK govt has not done anything for the district in the past four years. DMK leader Stalin always says their alliance is very strong. He believes in the alliance parties. But the AIADMK believes in the people of Tamil Nadu, because we have implemented various projects in the state.
"
EPS said the people of Coimbatore would vote for the NDA and help the alliance win all 10 seats in the district. "Stalin is daydreaming that his alliance will secure more than 200 seats. It won't happen in the 2026 assembly election. Stalin only thinks about his family members and has been working for the development of his family. How could he expect votes for his party?"
He accused the DMK govt of diverting the money from the hundi at the temples maintained by the HR&CE department for education.
"Devotees donate money for the development of temples. So, the govt should use it only for temple purposes. But the DMK govt has used it for constructing colleges. Such criminal acts should be prevented immediately."
While EPS slammed the left parties, he lauded state CPM secretary P Shanmugam for raising his voice against the DMK. "Communist parties have been on a decline in the state. CPI state secretary R Mutharasan doesn't have the guts to question the DMK for its anti-people governance. CPM's Shanmugam is the only person from the left parties who questioned the DMK for not doing anything for the welfare of people of Tamil Nadu.
I appreciate Shanmugam. But many communist leaders are working like slaves of the DMK."
Earlier in the day, EPS went for a morning walk at Race Course and interacted with walkers. Later, he met with various associations of entrepreneurs.

Ambazari ‘Man-Made', Exempt from Wetland Tag: Collector Tells HC

Nagpur: The district administration informed the Nagpur bench of Bombay high court on Wednesday that the Ambazari Lake does not qualify as a notified wetland under central govt norms, defending the decision taken by the High-Powered Committee (HPC) on April 29. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The submission comes through an affidavit filed by collector Vipin Itankar in reply to objections raised by the petitioners in a PIL filed by Ramgopal Bachuka and others through counsel Tushar Mandlekar. The petitioners highlighted the devastating impact of the September 2023 floods, which caused extensive property damage and loss of life across Nagpur. Responding to specific allegations in the additional affidavit filed by 91-year-old Bachuka, the collector clarified that Ambazari Lake — though the largest in Nagpur — is a man-made reservoir built for drinking water and aquaculture. "As per MoEFCC guidelines (2020), such artificial water bodies are exempt from wetland notification," he noted, citing the Wetlands (Conservation and Management) Rules, 2017. The District Wetland Committee, formed on March 28, 2024, reviewed 71 water bodies, including Ambazari, and submitted its recommendations to the Maharashtra Environment Department on July 4, 2025. Itankar confirmed that the ministry of environment has already received scrutiny sheets and brief documentation for the same on March 26. The petitioners claimed that Ambazari was a designated wetland under ISRO's Wetland Inventory Atlas, alleging its neglect contributed to the September 2023 flooding that killed four citizens, damaged 26,612 private properties, and caused public loss worth Rs234 crore. While the collector did not confirm total losses, it acknowledged that Rs28.25 crore in ex-gratia relief was paid to 28,256 families at Rs10,000 per household. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Additionally, Rs4 lakh was paid to each of the four bereaved families. Petitioners also alleged that flood-affected zones included 143 localities, accusing the administration of issuing tenders for Rs21 crore in dam repairs without broader public consultation. The collector clarified that those tenders did not pertain to his office directly. A division bench comprising justices Nitin Sambre and Sachin Deshmukh adjourned the hearing for two weeks. The court is currently assessing the adequacy of govt responses to both disaster relief and long-term water body protection. The PIL argues for greater ecological safeguards in the wake of extreme weather events. BOX Collector's Reply on Ambazari Flood PIL - Ambazari Lake declared man-made, hence exempt from wetland notification under MoEFCC 2020 guidelines - District Wetland Committee formed on March 28, 2024; reviewed 71 water bodies, including Ambazari - Rs28.25 crore paid as relief to 28,256 families post September 2023 floods (Rs10,000 per family) - 4 deaths reported; Rs16 lakh compensation given (Rs4 lakh each) - Public losses claimed: Rs234 crore (not verified) by petitioners - Ambazari excluded from wetland list as it's used for drinking water & aquaculture

SBSP steps up activity in Mau to stake claim for bypoll ticket

Lucknow: BJP ally Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party has begun spadework to stake claim for contesting the Mau assembly bypoll — necessitated after the disqualification of SBSP MLA and late gangster-politician Mukhtar Ansari's son Abbas Ansari, after his conviction in a hate speech case. SBSP chief and UP panchayati Raj minister Om Prakash Rajbhar told TOI that the party has deployed its functionaries at the booth and sector levels to bolster the organisational structure. He said party functionaries of various castes have been stationed in villages to organise 'chaupals' (village meetings). Rajbhar said the party will hold more than two dozen chaupals every day in Mau, which has a sizable population of Rajbhars, who form the party's core vote base. Rajbhar's focus on chaupals and booth-level mobilisation, especially in a constituency with a strong Rajbhar presence, is being seen as an effort to cement SBSP's status as the voice of non-dominant OBCs while projecting the party as not just a BJP ally, but a grassroots force in its own right. The party, experts said, might also be testing its bargaining power with the BJP, besides increasing its legislative presence and visibility ahead of the 2027 UP elections. I nterestingly, the constituency is dominated by Muslims, who comprise around 35% of the total electorate. This voting bloc has traditionally been aligned with the Ansari family for nearly two decades. Mukhtar won the seat twice on a BSP ticket (in 1996 and 2017), twice as an independent (2002 and 2007), and once as a Quami Ekta Dal (QED) candidate in 2012. Mukhtar died in Banda jail following a cardiac arrest in 2024. His son Abbas won the seat in 2022 on an SBSP ticket, which was then an ally of the Samajwadi Party. He defeated BJP's Ashok Singh by a margin of 48,000 votes. Rajbhar, however, snapped ties and joined the BJP-led NDA in 2023. Rajbhar reiterated that his party was a runner-up in the seat in 2017 and won it in 2022. "Mau has been our constituency. We groomed it for long," Rajbhar asserted. Sources said that Rajbhar's elder son, Arvind, camped in the constituency to oversee the political spadework. A senior SBSP leader mentioned that Rajbhar seeks to play up the issue of social justice and sub-division of OBC and SC quota. BJP sources, however, said that a formal decision on who would contest the Mau bypoll would be taken after the Election Commission issues the notification for the same. Speculations have been rife that the bypoll may be held along with the Bihar assembly elections later this year. "The byelection in Mau would be contested by NDA. A broader consensus would be drawn soon," a BJP functionary said, asserting that all poll parameters would be factored in before any decision is taken. Nevertheless, analysts said, the BJP sought to formulate its strategy on the lines of by-polls in the Muslim-dominated Kundarki and Rampur assembly seats, which it won in 2024 and 2022, respectively.

Major row erupts over use of temple funds in Tamil Nadu

A political controversy has erupted in Tamil Nadu over the use of temple funds to build government colleges. AIADMK chief Edappadi K. Palaniswami accused the DMK-led government of diverting donations meant for temples to construct colleges. The DMK defended the practice, stating it has been done for years and temple funds are used for humanitarian needs like education. This has reignited the debate on whether temple funds should be used solely for temple development or can be utilised for broader social welfare. The AIADMK and BJP have criticised the government's actions, while the DMK argues temples have historically supported education in the state. The issue has become a major political flashpoint ahead of next year's assembly elections in Tamil Nadu. And in Karnataka, there's widespread panic over heart attacks, with large crowds gathering at Mysore's Jayadeva Hospital for check-ups. The Karnataka High Court has stayed a state government order to close Jan Aushadhi Kendras in government hospitals, seen as a setback for the Siddaramaiah government. The BJP has criticised the state's move to shut these centers.
