'Try And Remove': Mallikarjun Kharge's Dare To RSS Leader Over Preamble Remark
Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday came down heavily on the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) over its pitch to reconsider the words "secular and socialist" from the Preamble of the Indian Constitution while saying that it was "all talk".
He dared and challenged RSS General Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale and top leaders of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the centre to remove the words "secular and socialist" from the Preamble.
"Days before, I heard that some RSS person said that we should remove Secular and Socialist words from the Constitution. I challenge them - be it him, their BJP, PM Modi, or Amit Shah - no one can remove those words. This is my challenge to them. Can you dare to remove it? This is all talk," Mr Kharge said while addressing the gathering at the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) meeting.
The veteran leader went on to recite Article 2 (Objective) in the BJP's Constitution and rules that talk about the party's "allegiance to the Indian Constitution and the principles of socialism, secularism and democracy".
He questioned the inclusion of the words "socialism and secularism" in the BJP's Constitution. "If you hate the words secularism and socialism so much, why are they mentioned in your Constitution? These people are like this only," Mr Kharge said.
Earlier on June 27, Congress leader and Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi attacked the RSS, saying that it doesn't want the Constitution but the Manusmriti. Intensifying his attack, Mr Gandhi said that RSS intended to violate the rights of the marginalised and the poor while enslaving them.
"The mask of RSS has come off again," he added.
"RSS-BJP doesn't want the Constitution. They want Manusmriti. They aim to strip the marginalised and the poor of their rights and enslave them again. Snatching a powerful weapon like the Constitution from them is their real agenda," the Congress leader posed on X.
This development comes after Mr Hosabale questioned the legitimacy of including the terms "socialist" and "secular" in the Preamble of the Indian Constitution on Thursday while addressing a program on the 50th anniversary of the Emergency held at Dr Ambedkar International Centre, jointly organised by the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (under the Ministry of Culture), Ambedkar International Centre.
He remarked that during the Emergency, terms like "socialism" and "secular" were forcibly inserted into the Constitution -- a move that needs to be reconsidered today. He emphasised that the Emergency wasn't just a misuse of power but an attempt to crush civil liberties. Millions were imprisoned, and freedom of the press was suppressed.

Kerala: CPI-M youth wing warns against protests targeting Health Minister Veena George
Thiruvananthapuram: The youth wing of the CPI-M -- the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) -- on Saturday warned the opposition protesters that they will not sit idle if State Health Minister Veena George is targeted. The DYFI said it will go to any extent to protect George as there is no reason to target her over the recent building collapse in which a woman was killed. For the second day in succession, the Congress-led UDF and the BJP workers have been on a rampage and clashed with the police across the state demanding the resignation of George. Fifty-six-year-old Bindu was killed after a toilet block of the Kottayam Medical College hospital came down on Thursday. There has been a massive public ire against Kerala Cooperation Minister V.N. Vasavan and George, who after reaching the place, said that just two people suffered minor injuries and no one was buried beneath the debris. On Saturday, he wondered: 'Did the Health Minister pull down the building? When an aircraft crashes, should the Prime Minister resign? Did anyone resign in Karnataka when people died in a stampede?" Following these remarks, he also had to face the ire of the protesters at Angamali. He was shown black flags by irate Congress workers when he arrived for an official function. Former Kerala unit BJP president K. Surendran said the state's health department has become a curse, while inaugurating a protest march of his party workers at the Kozhikode Medical College hospital. 'It's all round chaos in the health sector with a serious shortage of medicines... surgeries are getting delayed, wrong medicines are given to patients and when the situation is going from bad to worse, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has left to the US for his medical treatment. Vijayan himself said now even the rich seek treatment from the government hospitals here, then why is he going to the US,' Surendran questioned. Veteran Congress legislator Ramesh Chennithala said George is an incapable Minister. "Due to her inability to deal with issues, the health sector in Kerala is in tantrums. Vijayan before leaving to the US should have got the resignation letter from George. The time is not far when just like the building collapsed at Kottayam, the Vijayan government is all set to collapse,' said Chennithala.

Maharashtra follows Tamil Nadu-style in opposing Hindi imposition: Stalin
He also warned the BJP should atone for its 'betrayal' against Tamil and Tamil Nadu at least now failing which the saffron party and its ally AIADMK, the state's principal opposition party, will be 'taught a lesson that they will never forget' from the people.

Seen outside BJP leader's house in Rajkot, public benches with Surat inscription spark political row in Gujarat
Six public benches, having allegedly travelled a distance of 450 kilometres from Surat to Rajkot, have become a cause of political controversy in Gujarat. Spotted outside the house of a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader in Rajkot's Old Pipaliya village, the inscription on these stone benches indicate they are from Surat. While the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) alleged that the benches, which were to be allotted to the citizens of Surat, had reached directly to Rajkot, a minister in Gujarat government said the benches were old and insisted that they were still being used for the public. The AAP, meanwhile, said it would approach the Surat district collector, seeking action in the matter. The controversy began on Friday evening, when AAP Corporator of Surat Municipal Corporation's (SMC) ward no. 17, Vipul Suhagiya, uploaded photos and videos of six benches parked outside the main gate of a house. Written in Gujarati, the inscriptions on the benches say they were 'allotted from MLA Praful Pansheriya from Kamrej seat (Surat), grant year 2016-17, and MP Prabhubhai Vasava from Bardoli (Surat), grant year 2022-23'. Pansheriya is now a Minister of State for Primary, Secondary and Higher Education with the Gujarat government. In the social media post, Suhagiya alleged that the benches were transported from Surat to Rajkot by BJP leader Bharat Vadodariya, and had been placed outside his house. Vadodariya had contested the 2021 SMC election but lost. Suhagiya told The Indian Express, 'I got the videos and photos from my friend who is a resident of Old Pipaliya village. He told me that the benches were placed outside the house of Vadodariya, who hails from the village and is settled in Surat City. The purpose of posting such videos and photos on social media is to ensure that government officials are aware of where the benches allotted through MP and MLA grants and funds are being allocated. If Vadodariya wanted benches, he should have asked the elected MLA or MP of his native village.' Suhagiya further added, 'We (AAP) will complain about this issue to the Surat district collector next week.' When contacted, Minister Pansheriya said, 'I have also come across such videos and photos, and it is from my last term. Generally, we provide benches for people to sit in a (housing) society in Surat city. Somebody may have taken such old benches from some society in Surat city and transported them to their native village. Even there, the benches are kept on a paver block path, and are not being privately used. Even there, they are meant for public use.' Talking to The Indian Express, Bardoli BJP MP Prabhu Vasava said, 'A mistake has been made by those who had taken such benches to Rajkot. It is the responsibility of the government officials, and I am hopeful that they will start a probe in this connection.' Vadodariya could not be reached for comment on the issue.
