iPhone 17 lineup expected in September; Apple faces pressure to make AI count

Time of India25-05-2025

Apple
is expected to launch the
iPhone 17 lineup
in September 2025, sticking to its annual upgrade cycle. According to reports and supply chain leaks, the Tim Cook-led company is adding a fourth model to its flagship smartphone series this year.
New model incoming
In addition to the base iPhone 17, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max, Apple is tipped to introduce a new variant called
iPhone 17
Air—a thinner (around 5.5 mm) and lighter model, possibly with a single rear camera. This could serve as Apple's answer to a segment of users looking for portability over performance.
Specs and display
All iPhone 17 models, including the
Air
, are expected to feature 120Hz ProMotion displays.
The screen sizes may range from 6.3 inches for the base model to 6.9 inches for the Pro Max. The Air is rumoured to come with a 6.6-inch display.
Apple may expand Always-On Display functionality across the lineup, though this is not confirmed.

Design refresh
Apple is also set to revamp the iPhone's design language, which has seen only iterative changes in recent years. While the iPhone 15 and 16 Pro models used titanium frames, the company may revert to aluminium for the iPhone 17 series—except for the Air, which could feature a titanium-aluminium hybrid.
The camera layout is reportedly getting a makeover. Instead of the squircle or vertical pill seen in recent models, the Pro variants may adopt a rectangular bar across the back, while the Air could feature a horizontal pill-shaped module. The iPhone 17 Pro Max might house a smaller Dynamic Island, thanks to new Face ID tech.

AI urgency
The design overhaul comes amid renewed scrutiny of Apple's position in the AI arms race.
Former chief designer Jony Ive
, who played a key role in shaping Apple's product DNA, recently announced a $6.4 billion deal with OpenAI to develop new AI-native hardware, through his startup io.
Apple, which pioneered on-device AI with features like Face ID, Siri, and computational photography, is now under pressure as rivals like Google and Microsoft push ahead with generative AI and large language models. Its 'Apple Intelligence' suite—announced for iOS 18, macOS Sequoia, and iPadOS 18—has had a slow rollout, with several key features still pending.
With expectations mounting, the iPhone 17 launch could be a critical moment for Apple to prove it's not falling behind in the AI era.

‘Reliance Jio may become dominant FWA provider by June-end, ahead of T-Mobile'

NEW DELHI: Reliance Jio is expected to become a dominant fixed wireless access (FWA) service provider by subscribers globally by the end of June, ahead of rival Bharti Airtel and US telecom carrier T-Mobile , according to ICICI Securities. The Mukesh Ambani-led telco gained 1.03 million 5G FWA customers in June, taking its total base to 5.85 million. By comparison, Airtel gained 182,458 customers, taking its user base to 1.54 million, according to the industry data collated by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) for May. The sector regulator has reclassified users of FWA-UBR (Fixed Wireless Access Unlicensed Band Radio) as fixed wireline customers. 'Industry FWA (excluding UBR) stood at 7.4 million with RJio's FWA subs at 5.9 million, and adjusted for UBR reclassification, net add was an impressive 0.74 million in May 2025. RJio's FWA (including UBR) stood at 6.88 million. This, compared to T-Mobile (US player, and had largest FWA subs base globally), FWA subs base was at 6.85 million in March 2025 (quarter),' the brokerage said in a research note on Sunday, which ETTelecom has reviewed. 'We believe RJio is path to become dominant player by subs for FWA globally by end-June 2025. Bharti's FWA subs rose 0.18 million to 1.5 million in May 2025; and Bharti is also scaling its FWA services to monetise the rising demand for fixed broadband in India,' it added. Jio and Airtel have seen a rapid uptake of their respective 5G fixed broadband services since the commercial launch in 2023. 5G FWA is also seen as a significant revenue-generation opportunity for the telcos, given the low penetration of wired broadband in India and a rise in data consumption. ICICI estimated that the wired broadband (including FWA) subsribers base rose at an average of 1.8 million per month over December 2024 to May 2025 to 51.5 million, representing a 24.6% year-on-year growth. 'Bharti's subs increase 0.29mn/month to 10.8mn. RJio added 0.66mn subs/month, now at 19.4mn. Other operators' subs base has been largely stable,' it said. According to ICICI, Jio's wired broadband (including FWA) market share rose to 37.6% in May 2025, compared to 34% in November 2024. During the same period, Airtel's share rose from about 20% to 21%, while state-controlled Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited's (BSNL) user base remained the same at 4.3 million but its market share fell from 10.3% in November 2024 to 8.4% in May 2025. Swedish telecom gear maker Ericsson , in its recently released report, said that a strong need for accessible broadband in rural and semi-urban areas is driving Indian operators to expand their 5G FWA footprints. 'Availability of affordable 5G FWA customer premises equipment (CPE) is also driving growth of 5G FWA, which will help bridge the digital divide,' it has said. Jio widens gap with rivals in active user base In May, Jio's active subscribers expanded by 5.5 million to 462 million, whereas Airtel's active subscribers base increased 1.3 million to 387 million, while Vodafone Idea's active subscribers declined by 1.3 million to 173 million as its network expansion is yet to show a visible impact, as per ICICI. Jio's active user market share rose 16bps (basis points) month-on-month to 42.8%, while Airtel's declined 13bps to 35.8% and Vi's fell 23bps to 16%, it said. 1bps is 0.01%. Industry-wide active subscriber base was up by 7.4 million to 1.08 billion, following a 0.7% month-on-month growth in May.

Mercedes, Audi, Volvo decline Apple CarPlay Ultra over control concerns: Report

The new and upgraded Apple CarPlay will be rolling out to most vehicles within the next 12 months. Check Offers Several of the world's top carmakers, such as Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volvo, Polestar, and Renault, have supposedly ruled out incorporating Apple's next-gen CarPlay Ultra system in their future models. This comes against previous expectations after Apple revealed the new-gen in-car experience in 2022. While Apple positioned CarPlay Ultra as a futuristic leap from its standard CarPlay system—offering control over all in-car displays including the instrument cluster—many European automakers appear hesitant to give Apple such extensive control over their digital ecosystems. According to a Financial Times report, a Renault executive directly told Apple: 'Don't try to invade our own systems." This statement encapsulates broader concerns among manufacturers that adopting CarPlay Ultra could erode their control over user experience, vehicle data, and system design. Also Read : WWDC 2025: Apple CarPlay gets 3 new features with iOS 26 Select automakers still on board Despite the resistance, Hyundai, Kia, Genesis, and Porsche continue to commit to adding the CarPlay Ultra system to their offerings. Jaguar Land Rover, however, said it is still considering the system, an attitude of more guarded but open-ended considering. Other manufacturers such as Ford, Nissan, and Infiniti, who were included in Apple's original 2022 list of partners, declined to provide updates but didn't completely rule out adoption. Honda and Acura are also reportedly still on track to implement the new system in future vehicles. Apple CarPlay Ultra: Features CarPlay Ultra is intended to take Apple's user interface beyond the infotainment screen and into the instrument cluster, showing important data such as speed, battery/fuel levels, and climate controls through Apple's software rather than the automaker's native design. Also Read : Apple CarPlay Ultra debuts in Aston Martin DBX 707. Now gets multi-screen support The system is currently available only in select vehicles—such as the Aston Martin DBX—and requires an iPhone 12 or newer running iOS 18.5 or later, with a wireless connection initiating the interface automatically on vehicle start-up. Apple's iOS 26 update, expected in September or October, will include enhancements to both standard CarPlay and CarPlay Ultra. New features include updated UI brackets, compact calling notifications, 'Tapback' emojis as reactions in Messages, and Live Activities through the vehicle's display experience. The reluctance of some auto OEMs to adopt CarPlay Ultra reflects the growing dispute between automobile manufacturers and tech companies regarding ownership of the in-car digital experience—which is becoming more central to both modern vehicles and user expectations. Telangana to restructure engineering fees to raise academic standards

The Telangana government is set to re-evaluate the fee structure for engineering colleges in the state, with a strong focus on improving educational quality and aligning with evolving industry demands. According to an official release, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy aims to raise the standards of technical education, urging institutions to match global benchmarks, especially in high-demand fields like Artificial Intelligence (AI).advertisementTo achieve this, the Congress-led state government plans to introduce a new system that encourages engineering colleges to upgrade infrastructure, enhance faculty quality, and improve laboratory facilities in line with guidelines from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).The review will consider various parameters such as faculty salaries, lab and classroom infrastructure, and other academic inputs while deciding the revised fees. The move also aligns with the Supreme Court's guidance that factors like teaching quality, staff remuneration, and institutional efforts to raise academic standards must be considered in fee determination. This initiative is expected to ensure that engineering colleges in Telangana are better equipped to produce industry-ready graduates and compete with leading institutions worldwide.(With PTI inputs)- Ends
