OPEN// Egypt continues historical role as pillar of regional stability and balance, Arab experts tell MENA
Cairo is increasingly emerging as a trusted mediator for all parties; drawing upon its long-standing experience and well-balanced international relations, the experts told MENA.
In recent years, Egyptian diplomacy has adopted an approach of direct engagement, intensifying mediation efforts and launching real settlement initiatives that take into account the sensitivities of conflicting parties without bias or recklessness, they said.
Mohsen Al-Shobaki, a Jordanian political and strategic expert, said the joint statement by Arab and Islamic countries regarding Israeli attacks on Iran, which was initiated by Egypt, reflects a decline in regional trust in Israel's unilateral actions and highlights the extent of unconditional Western support for Israel—often at the expense of other regional allies.
Shobaki emphasized that President Abdel Fattah El Sisi and Egypt's leadership fully understand the seriousness of the current stage in the Middle East, as escalating tensions are being driven by extremist Israeli policies—not limited to Gaza, but extending to military and civilian targets in Iran.
Dr. Ola Shahoud, professor of international relations at the Institute of Oriental Studies in Moscow, said that amid the rising tensions between Iran and Israel, Egypt stands out as a responsible regional actor seeking to avert catastrophe in the Middle East.
Cairo's actions are guided by a strategic vision grounded in a long history of active regional engagement and balanced diplomacy, she added.
She praised Egypt's efforts, which culminated in the joint statement that underscored the need to rid the Middle East of nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction, in line with relevant international resolutions, and the immediate accession of all regional states to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).
Dr. Areej Jaber, a professor of political science in Jordan, said the latest developments in the Middle East point to a rapid slide into unprecedented regional escalation, with Israel expanding its military reach into confrontations with sovereign states, primarily Iran—seeking what it views as a 'historic opportunity' to reshape the Middle East.
Egypt has emerged as a rational and stabilizing regional actor, reasserting its leading role in shaping balanced responses to growing threats and preventing the crisis from escalating, she noted.
Dr. Monica William, an expert in international relations, said the joint statement spearheaded by Egypt was a diplomatic signal of critical timing and significance in an increasingly volatile regional landscape.
The statement's call for restraint and the cessation of hostilities represents a revival of preventive diplomacy in a region often prone to rapid escalation, she noted.
The Egyptian initiative was more than a symbolic gesture—it was a serious effort to reset the regional dynamics, particularly as Western mediation efforts have largely failed to prevent further deterioration, she pointed out. (MENA)

Egypt, UK deepen economic, development ties ahead of Madbouly's visit to London
Egypt's Minister of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation, Rania Al-Mashat, held talks with UK Minister of State for International Development, Baroness Jenny Chapman, on the sidelines of the G20 Development Ministers' Meeting in South Africa. The meeting focused on advancing bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, and global development reform ahead of the upcoming visit by Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly to the UK. Both officials underscored the strategic significance of the visit, describing it as a pivotal step toward transforming Egyptian-British relations into a deeper partnership. The visit also aligns with Egypt's broader push to strengthen ties with the European Union. Discussions centered on reforming global financial systems to make them more inclusive and accessible for developing countries. The ministers stressed the urgency of implementing international recommendations for greater transparency in financing and called for reforms to the UN's development frameworks to ensure stronger national ownership and coordination. Al-Mashat highlighted Egypt's expanding collaboration with the UK in key areas such as food security, entrepreneurship, and SME development. She noted that the UK remains one of Egypt's top foreign investors, with significant engagement in energy, telecommunications, pharmaceuticals, and consumer goods. The meeting also reviewed the role of key British financial institutions—including the World Bank, UK Export Finance (UKEF), and British International Investment (BII)—in supporting Egypt's development priorities. BII, which considers Egypt a key market, is actively investing in areas like renewable energy and infrastructure. The ministers acknowledged the contribution of the British-Egyptian Business Association (BEBA) and the Egyptian-British Chamber of Commerce (EBCC) in fostering stronger commercial links. Al-Mashat outlined the forthcoming launch of Egypt's 'National Narrative for Economic Development,' a strategic initiative aimed at accelerating structural reforms, boosting industrial output, and attracting foreign direct investment. She emphasized that economic measures introduced since March 2024 have stabilized the macroeconomic environment and improved investor confidence. Climate cooperation was also a major theme, with discussions on Egypt's NWFE (Nexus of Water, Food, and Energy) platform and BII's role in financing green hydrogen and clean energy projects. The UK's support for global climate funds—including the Climate Investment Funds (CIF) and the Green Climate Fund (GCF)—was noted, along with the joint 'Green Growth: Egypt–UK' initiative, which continues through COP30. Baroness Chapman reaffirmed the UK's commitment to its partnership with Egypt, praising Cairo's historical and humanitarian leadership—particularly its role in supporting Gaza. She also reiterated the UK's call for a sustainable ceasefire to ensure unimpeded humanitarian aid. The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to deepening economic and development cooperation and advocating for global financial reforms that empower developing countries.

OPEN// Egyptian, Qatari FMs discuss efforts to secure Gaza ceasefire deal
CAIRO, July 27 (MENA) - Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty discussed in a phone call with his Qatari counterpart Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, the latest developments in the Gaza Strip, especially in light the efforts made by Egypt and Qatar to strike a ceasefire deal in the Palestinian enclave. The two top diplomats highlighted flagrant crimes and violations committed by Israel against Palestinians, amid the unprecedented humanitarian situation in Gaza, said spokesman for the foreign ministry Tamim Khallaf. Abdelatty and Sheikh Mohammed stressed their full commitment to continuing negotiations between Israel and Hamas to reach a comprehensive ceasefire agreement as soon as possible, which contributes to allowing the access of humanitarian and relief aid into the Palestinian territory and putting an end to the repeated crimes committed by Israel. The pair also addressed the latest updates regarding Egypt's hosting of an international conference on early recovery and reconstruction in Gaza, which aims to implement the Arab-Islamic plan for the reconstruction of the Palestinian enclave. They underlined the importance of sustaining joint coordination between the two countries and mobilizing international backing for establishing a Palestinian state along the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
