Ukraine grants Poland permission to exhume 1939 war graves in Lviv
The renewed cooperation follows years of tension surrounding the treatment of war memorials and historical sites.
Ukraine imposed a moratorium on exhumations in 2017 after several Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) monuments were destroyed in Poland. The moratorium effectively ended last April when Ukrainian and Polish researchers carried out joint exhumations of the Volyn massacre victims in Ukraine's Ternopil Oblast.
The Culture Ministry said the latest decision is a further step in Polish-Ukrainian cooperation on sensitive historical issues and follows the work of the Joint Polish-Ukrainian Working Group on historical matters.
"Ukraine confirms its readiness to continue search and exhumation work within the framework of the Joint Working Group," the ministry said in a statement. It added that the exhumations at Zboiska represent a continuation of efforts to address historical memory and reconciliation.
The Zboiska site is believed to contain the remains of around 120 Polish soldiers who died fighting against Nazi German forces in 1939, Rzeczpospolita reported. The remains were first located in 2019, according to Polish officials. The Institute of National Remembrance of Poland (IPN) had submitted a formal request to excavate burial grounds in Zboiska and the nearby district of Pid Holoskom.
The ministry also lauded the April exhumations in the former village of Puzhnyky in Ternopil Oblast as the first successful step of this new cooperation.
Puzhnyky is associated with the 1945 killing of Polish civilians by the UPA during the Volyn massacres, one of the most painful and contentious chapters in Polish-Ukrainian history.
In a reciprocal gesture, Ukraine has received Poland's approval to carry out its own search and exhumation activities in the Polish village of Yurechkova. Kyiv says it hopes such work can begin soon.
The Culture Ministry emphasized that the progress reflects the constructive relationship between the two countries and their shared commitment to historical truth and dignity for the dead.
"Joint remembrance and steps toward one another will unite our nations in the name of our shared European future," the statement said.
In January, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk called the agreement on exhumation efforts a "breakthrough," while officials in Warsaw warned that unresolved historical issues could influence Ukraine's aspirations to join the European Union and NATO.

The poll also found that the favorability rating of Trump administration officials has gone down since January. For instance, Musk's net favorable rating was negative 4% according to a Gallup poll conducted Jan. 21-Jan. 27. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who oversaw the purge of U.S. Agency for International Development programs, had a net favorable rating of 8% in January. Now it's at negative 16%. The poll of 1,002 adults has a margin of error of plus or minus four percentage points.

NATO to coordinate regular and large-scale arm deliveries to Ukraine. Most will be bought in the US
BRUSSELS — NATO has started coordinating regular deliveries of large weapons packages to Ukraine after the Netherlands said it would provide air defense equipment, ammunition and other military aid worth $578 million. Sweden also announced Tuesday it would contribute $275 million to a joint effort along with its Nordic neighbors Denmark and Norway to provide $500 million worth of air defenses, anti-tank weapons, ammunition and spare parts. Two deliveries of equipment, most of it bought in the United States, are expected this month, although the Nordic package is expected to arrive in September. The equipment is supplied based on Ukraine's priority needs on the battlefield. NATO allies then locate the weapons and ammunition and send them on. 'Packages will be prepared rapidly and issued on a regular basis,' NATO said Monday. Air defense systems are in greatest need. The United Nations has said that Russia's relentless pounding of urban areas behind the front line has killed more than 12,000 Ukrainian civilians. Russia's bigger army is also making slow but costly progress along the 1,000-kilometer (620-mile) front line. Currently, it is waging an operation to take the eastern city of Pokrovsk, a logistical hub whose fall could allow it to drive deeper into Ukraine. European allies and Canada are buying most of the equipment they plan to send from the United States, which has greater stocks of ready military materiel, as well as more effective weapons. The Trump administration is not giving any arms to Ukraine. The new deliveries will come on top of other pledges of military equipment. The Kiel Institute, which tracks support to Ukraine, estimates that as of June, European countries had provided 72 billion euros ($83 billion) worth of military aid since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022, compared to $65 billion in U.S. aid. Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans said that 'American air defense systems and munitions, in particular, are crucial for Ukraine to defend itself.' Announcing the deliveries Monday, he said Russia's attacks are 'pure terror, intended to break Ukraine.' President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude to the Netherlands, posting on social media that 'Ukraine, and thus the whole of Europe, will be better protected from Russian terror.' He said the deliveries are coming 'at a time when Russia is trying to scale up its strikes. This will definitely help protect the lives of our people!' Germany said Friday it will deliver two more Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine in the coming days. It agreed to the move after securing assurances that the U.S. will prioritize the delivery of new Patriots to Germany to backfill its stocks. These weapon systems are only made in the U.S. As an organization, NATO provides only non-lethal assistance to Ukraine like uniforms, tents, medical supplies and logistics support. The 32-nation military alliance has mostly sought to protect NATO territory from possible Russian attack and avoid being dragged into a war against a nuclear power. But its support role has expanded since U.S. President Donald Trump took office in January, even as his administration insists European allies must now take care of their own security and that of their war-ravaged neighbor. Trump has made no public promise of weapons or economic support for Ukraine. Trump said on July 28 that the U.S. is 'going to be sending now military equipment and other equipment to NATO, and they'll be doing what they want, but I guess it's for the most part working with Ukraine.'

Trump trails Ocasio-Cortez, Sanders in favorability polling: Gallup
President Trump trails progressive stalwarts Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) in favorability polling, according to a new survey conducted by Gallup. The poll, which was released Tuesday morning, found that among 14 prominent figures, Trump's net favorable rating was minus 16 points, with 41 percent of respondents having a favorable view of the president, while 57 percent said the opposite. Some two percent had no opinion about the president. Ocasio-Cortez's net favorability was minus four points, with 34 percent having a favorable view of the progressive firebrand, while another 38 percent had an unfavorable outlook on the New York Democrat. About 28 percent had no opinion about the progressive lawmaker. Former President Biden, whose public support while in office never recovered after dropping midway through his Oval Office term, accumulated a minus 11 point favorable rating, placing him in the middle of the list. Around 43 percent of U.S. adults had a favorable view of Biden, while 54 percent said the opposite. Some three percent had no opinion. Pope Leo XIV had the most positive image out of the 14 public figures on the list, with 57 percent having a favorable view and just 11 percent going in the opposite. Nearly a third, 31 percent, had no opinion about the American-born pontiff. Second on the list was Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky with plus 18, while in third place was Sanders with plus 11, the survey found. California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) and Vice President Vance had an identical net favorability with minus 11 points. Among Trump administration officials, the favorability has dropped the most for Secretary of State Marco Rubio and tech billionaire Elon Musk, with each dropping by 24 points, Gallup noted. Rubio's net favorability is at minus 16 points, with 31 percent having a favorable view of the former Florida senator, while 47 percent have an unfavorable outlook. Musk, the former head of the Department of Government Efficiency who had a public fallout with Trump over the president's signature 'Big, Beautiful Bill,' was at the bottom of the list with minus 28 net favorability, a 24-point downward swing since January. Gallup noted that the 'dampened favorable ratings of key Trump administration officials since January are broadly consistent with the decline in Trump's job approval rating over the same period, down 10 percentage points.' A late July Gallup poll found that Trump's approval rating was at 37 percent, down 10 points since taking office. The recent The Economist/YouGov survey found the president's net approval rating to be 15 points underwater. The poll was conducted from July 7-21 among 1,002 adults. The margin of error was four percentage points at the 95 percent confidence level.
