PKR MPs call for RCI on judiciary, fear new VK Lingam-esque scandal
HLT34: Bravo, Rafizi Ramli and your comrades! This is what the rakyat expect our elected MPs to do - voice out our fears before things get out of hand.
Don't let VK Lingam's Saga 2.0 happen. I wish more MPs would stand together with Rafizi, even the newly minted PKR deputy Nurul Izzah Anwar.
For Rafizi and your comrades, be prepared to be sacked or charged. But please remember, the rakyat is with you.
Mazhilamani: Two things are very clear: One, there is a build-up of a faction in PKR; two, the delay in appointing replacements for retiring top judges as proposed by the then CJ, is beginning to look contentious. The PM's motive is in question.
I don't think Rafizi and the other PKR MPs are getting personal with the prime minister. They just want the PM to carry out the reformasi he promised nearly three decades ago, to cleanse the politics, which is starting to bleed the country.
The time is now when he is still the PM.
As I had mentioned earlier, it is best for MPs to make an honest decision.
Mechi: I know we can count on Rafizi. His mantra is rakyat and nation come first. I cannot trust the PM anymore. If Malaysia wants to change, we need qualified leaders with integrity.
The PM does not have it, like his Umno stooges. We hope the rakyat will stand against corruption. Otherwise, all the court charges against Umno leaders will be DNAA (dismissal not amounting to an acquittal).
Times are interesting for both PKR and Umno. Corruption seems to be the common denominator.
Undecided: When PMX prioritises dubious politics over fundamental principles of good governance, it is not surprising that he will get himself into a bind.
A Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) is the only way he can clear himself. Keep up the pressure, Rafizi and co. Rakyat will support your call for action.
RedHamster4450: I beg to differ. Now that Rafizi is no longer in the cabinet, he's reverted to his previous self - activist and using his voice to bring attention to issues which plague Malaysia.
Not being a cabinet minister or deputy president of PKR is not the end of the road, just new beginnings.
After all, look at KJ (Khairy Jamaluddin), kena tendang parti (got kicked out of the party), but his following is larger than ever.
MarioT: The Judicial Appointment Commission's (JAC) recommendations were totally ignored by the 'dictatorial' actions of our globetrotting Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. The judiciary is in limbo with no clear leadership at the top. Anwar thinks and behaves like his one-time long-serving mentor.
The judiciary is the most honoured and respected custodian of the laws of the country, and if it is treated as unimportant and if it is manipulated by the PM, then he has failed his duty to upkeep decorum and order within the judiciary.
There was ample time to decide to extend the term of service of the retiring chief justice (Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat), and other senior judges or find replacements for the vacant posts. However, the PM, due to his own self-serving reasons, kept silent and did not endorse JAC's dutiful and adjudicated recommendations.
If he cannot prioritise his work and spends more time on overseas trips of little value, it is time he is replaced.
Once in power, he forgets the rakyat have placed him in that position and that they can also remove him for having lost confidence in him
Bobbyo: PKR needs to replace their leader if it wants to make an impact at the next election. Anwar has led the nation down by kowtowing to the demands of Umno. He appears to be showing or repeating the unpopular decisions made by former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
There seems to be so much of Umno and Mahathir's DNA that flows through Anwar. The people feel that they have been let down very badly. This act of not renewing the service of our former CJ points to the fact that Anwar may have either something to fear, or he wants only those who toe the line to be in position.
The recent extension of Azam Baki's tenure as MACC chief commissioner, the promotion of a junior officer (special branch director) to the level of IGP (Khalid Ismail), and now allegedly interfering in the judicial process show that PMX wants only 'yes' men or women in positions.
The judiciary, the last pillar that holds this nation, will collapse if it is compromised by judges with no integrity. It is time an RCI be set up to investigate all the complaints.
To make sure that there is no political power in play in the selection of compromised judges.

High Court rules Isham Jalil's judiciary remarks on Najib's SRC, 1MDB trials not contemptuous

KUALA LUMPUR, July 8 — The High Court today ruled that former Umno information chief Isham Jalil's remarks criticising Datuk Seri Najib Razak's corruption trials did not amount to contempt of court. Judge K. Muniandy dismissed committal proceedings brought by the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC), finding that Isham's statements did not pose a real risk to public confidence in the judiciary, according to a report in the New Straits Times today. He said the comments did not directly concern the specific courts that heard and ruled on the 1MDB and SRC International Bhd cases, which had already been concluded. 'What could be regarded as scandalous or interfering with the course of justice earlier may not be so today,' said Muniandy. He added that vague allegations claiming Isham had scandalised the judiciary lacked context and failed to demonstrate actual harm to the administration of justice. The judge stressed that the law of contempt aims to protect the public's interest in a functioning justice system, not to shield judges from criticism. 'With the advent of social media, criticisms against a judge and his decision is commonplace,' he said, adding that judges must remain impartial and resilient in the face of external pressure. Muniandy also affirmed that judgments in Najib's corruption trials were grounded in facts and law, not influenced by emotion or public sentiment. He acknowledged that while freedom of speech is vital to democracy, it must be exercised with respect for the judiciary's role and responsibility. 'Contempt powers should only be used where there is a real risk of undermining the administration of justice, not merely to silence uncomfortable or critical opinions,' he said. The AGC filed the contempt application on December 28, 2023, following Isham's remarks during an interview titled 'Townhall For Justice: Keadilan Sebenarnya Untuk Siapa?', which aired on The Malaya Post's Facebook page on September 30, 2023.

Staunch Reformasi activist Ezam wants cops to investigate PMX for power abuse, delaying CJ's appt

IT seems that more former and even present PKR leaders are openly showing their disgruntlement towards their party's president and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Former PKR Youth chief (1990-2007) Datuk Ezam Mohd Nor is the latest to do so by lodging a police report yesterday (July 8) which called on cops to open an investigation paper and arrest PMX over alleged abuse of power in the appointment of the new Chief Justice (CJ). Ezam who has officially joined PAS in Sept 2024 contended that such action was necessary to avert a crisis involving an important national institution, namely the judiciary, with the mastermind holding the PM position. 'We feel that there is a sense of urgency here given there is a case involving the PM in court that has not yet been heard,' HarakahDaily cited him after filing a police report at the Dang Wangi District Police Headquarters (IPD) yesterday (July 7). 'We've reason to believe there's even abuse of power in connection to the PM's case involving a civil suit (on sexual assault) filed by an individual named Yusoff Rawther against him which has been postponed several times. 'This strengthens our belief that action must be taken immediately by the police.' Also present were the Gerakan Pembela Ummah (UMMAH) chairman Mohd Zai Mustafa, Pertubuhan Pribumi Perkasa Malaysia (PERKASA) president Syed Hasan Syed Ali and the Gabungan Mahasiswa Islam Se-Malaysia (GAMIS) president Mohammad Azamuddin Sahar. '180-degree turn of heart' Recall that former PKR deputy president and Pandan MP Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli had also on yesterday (July 8) led a team of nine PKR MPs (including himself) to break rank from their party by calling for the setting up of a royal commission of inquiry (RCI) to probe allege irregularities in the appointment of senior judges, including the CJ. Elaborating farther, Ezam also insisted that PMX should also be prevented from discharging his PM duties given his presence in office could entail adverse implication to the country by virtue of the severity of his pending lawsuit. 'Anwar had faced a similar case which is abuse of power when he was deputy PM. He was charged with blackmailing witnesses in his sodomy case,' asserted Ezam who was the Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM) deputy president prior to joining PAS. That Ezam has openly opposed PMX has raised eyebrows given that the former PMX political secretary during his tenure as deputy PM had fiercely defended PMX by taking to the streets in the Federal capital to protest PMX's sacking by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. In his quest to staunchly defend PMX when the latter was jailed at the Sungai Buloh Prison on corruption and sodomy charges, Ezam himself was detained twice for almost three years at the Kamunting Detention Camp and Kajang Prison under the now repealed Internal Security Act (ISA) and Official Secrets Act 1972 (OSA). Aside from yesterday's police report, PAS will be staging a rally in the Federal capital to call for the stepping down of PMX on July 26 . – July 8, 2025 Main image credit: HarakahDaily

Anwar praises Brazil visit success in boosting ties and cooperation

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has declared his visit to Rio de Janeiro for the 17th BRICS Leaders' Summit a major success in enhancing bilateral relations and expanding Malaysia's global strategic cooperation. In a Facebook post, the Prime Minister stated that the trip met its key goals, reinforcing ties not only with Brazil but also with other BRICS nations. Anwar emphasised Malaysia's growing reputation among international investors, crediting the MADANI Government's dedication to attracting high-quality investments that drive economic growth. 'Malaysia's name continues to be on the lips of international investors as a result of the unwavering commitment of the entire MADANI Government team,' he said. He urged the public to remain focused on progress, dismissing negative voices that undermine these efforts. 'Our journey is far from over, and we will continue to forge ahead with determination and commitment to bring real change to the country and future generations,' Anwar added. The Prime Minister thanked all involved in the mission's success, including ministry officials, the Malaysian Embassy in Brazil, security personnel, and media representatives. He concluded with a message in Portuguese: 'Obrigado, Brasil. Até nos encontrarmos novamente (Thank you, Brazil. Until we meet again).' Anwar returned to Malaysia after a three-nation tour that included stops in Italy and France. The Malaysian delegation departed from Galeão Air Base at 1 pm local time.
