Boy dies after ‘his mom left him in hot car for hours to get cosmetic procedure'
Maya Hernandez, 20, is accused of leaving her son, Amillio Gutierrez, and his two-year-old brother fastened to their car seats in her Toyota Corolla hybrid outside the Always Beautiful Med Spa in Bakersfield, California.
Amillio was foaming at the mouth, convulsing and unresponsive, and had a body temperature of 107 degrees Fahrenheit when Hernandez returned to her car around 4.30pm on June 29.
He was rushed to a hospital and pronounced dead just before 6pm.
Amillio's older brother survived.
'When his mom left him and his 2-year-old brother alone in her car, Amillio was so special; he always had a smile no matter what,' wrote the boys' grandmother, Katie Martinez, in a GoFundMe page for his celebration of life.
'He is loved by so many, our lives will not be the same.
'His brother will forever be without his best friend.'
Hernandez told police officers that she left the air conditioning and car on while going in for the cosmetic procedure, according to arrest documents obtained by KFSN.
But investigators said her car was warm and that it had a feature to automatically turn the engine off after an hour.
The two boys are believed to have been trapped inside without air conditioning for at least an hour-and-a-half.
'They were strapped in their car seats. They couldn't even get up to save themselves,' their grandmother, Katie Martinez, told the TV station.
'She literally locked them in their car seats and shut their doors.'
Martinez was also shocked at Hernandez's actions.
'She wasn't like that. She was a really loving mom,' the grandma said.
'Those boys loved her. They really loved her and they relied on her.'
A nurse at the spa reportedly told officers that Hernandez asked if she could bring her kids with her as she got the procedure done, and did not say that they were in the car when she arrived. The lip filler appointment apparently only took 15 to 20 minutes. More Trending
Hernandez has since been charged with involuntary manslaughter and child cruelty, and is being held at on a more than $1million bail. She is slated to appear for a preliminary hearing in court on Friday.
A vigil for Amillio was held at a park on Saturday. The GoFundMe page to bring his body home to Porterville and hold a celebration of life for him had raised $174 as of Tuesday evening.
'He just started walking on Thursday, and on Sunday, he gained his angel wings. I will never be the same without him,' Martinez wrote.
'Amillio Gutierrez, my grandson, I will be with you again in heaven. Until we meet again, you are missed so much.' Please help us bring him home to his brother and to our family. '

Paedophile who raped a six-year-old girl to be surgically castrated
A child rapist has been sentenced to surgical castration in Madagascar, the island nation's court of appeal has said. The man was convicted of assaulting and attempting to murder a six-year-old girl in Imerintsiatosika, around 30km from the capital, Antananarivo. Madagascar introduced legislation in 2024 sanctioning the procedure for people found guilty of raping children aged under 10. Attorney general Didier Razafindralambo said, in addition to the surgery, the convict had also been handed a life imprisonment with hard labour. He said: 'Today's decision is a strong and significant response from the justice system, intended also to serve as a warning to anyone with similar malicious intentions.' Other countries have carried out surgical castration of rapists with the approval of the defendant, including Germany and Czechia. Louisiana recently became the first US State to permit judges to order surgical castration of sexual offenders, MailOnline reported. Some nations, including Russia, Poland and South Korea, use chemical castration, usually carried by the regular administration of drugs, as a preventative measure. More Trending Britain is considering introducing the chemical procedure. In May, Defence Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced the extension of a pilot scheme to 20 UK prison. The rollout started across two regions in south west England. However human rights groups have expressed concerns around the ethics of the practice, calling for efforts to be focused on supporting survivors of abuse and encouraging them to come forward. How backpacker was found after 11 freezing nights lost in the Australian Outback
Carolina Wilga spent 11 nights lost in the Western Australian Outback convinced nobody would find her. It was only by 'sheer luck' that a woman happened to be driving past the 'confused and disoriented' 26-year-old wandering miles from where she had to abandon her van. WA police acting detective inspector Jessica Securo said: 'She basically looked at the direction of the sun and tried to head west, thinking that would be her best bet of coming across someone or a road.' When finally found, Carolina was 'exhausted, dehydrated and hungry', 'ravaged' by mosquitoes, and covered in cuts and bruises. She was taken to the police and airlifted to a Perth hospital for treatment. 'This is the best result we could have hoped for,' Ms Securo said. 'We're incredibly grateful that she's been found safe, and obviously this is a huge relief for her family and all of her loved ones. 'We never gave up hope that Carolina would be found safe and well … the support of our WA community is our greatest asset, particularly in a state as vast as ours. 'It's sheer luck. The area out there is mixed terrain. It can be quite dangerous if you don't know what you're doing or where you're going, and it's very easy to get lost.' The German backpacker is not expected to be released until later, with Ms Securo saying she still needs further 'emotional support' alongside other medical treatment. 'She's had a good night's sleep. She's had a shower,' the officer said. 'We've got her some food, which was a massive relief for her. 'So, she's just taking it one day at a time at the moment.' Carolina is now in 'frequent communication' with her family who are relieved and thankful the Western Australian community came together to 'throw every resource at locating their daughter'. Shehad been last seen on June 29 arriving in the van at a general store in the small agricultural community of Beacon, northeast of Perth. Police found the van on Thursday, abandoned after getting stuck in dense bushland north of Beacon, with plastic orange traction tracks placed beneath the rear wheels. 'It appears that she has somewhat lost control of the vehicle, and then it's become mechanically unsound, and bogged,' Ms Securo said. Carolina stayed with the van for one day before leaving the vehicle through 'panic', hoping to find help. More Trending 'She had minimal food and minimal water. From speaking to her, she has said she could have planned better,' Ms Securo added. Police say she had spent two years backpacking around the country, and was working at mine sites in Western Australia while staying mostly at hostels. 'Carolina has told me that she loves Australia,' Ms Securo said. 'She still has so much travel to do here. She hasn't made it over to the east coast yet, so that's still on her bucket list.' Young couple stranded in Spain after crooks rob passport and jewellery in £60k car heist
Anna Higginbottom and Peter Lesisz were robbed of around £60,000 as they prepared to return home to Scotland. A young Scots couple have been left stranded and in Spain after ruthless thieves ransacked their car in a devastating £60,000 heist. 'Heartbroken' Anna Higginbottom, 27, and her partner Peter Lesisz, 26, had been due to catch a ferry from Bilbao to Portsmouth on Tuesday as they made their way back to Scotland from the Spanish town of Denia - where Anna had been living and working. The pair stayed in a hostel in Bilbao on Monday night, reassured by staff that the car park had CCTV and was secure. However, by morning, their vehicle had been broken into via the passenger door and had been completely cleaned out by crooks. 'We've been left with only our phones and each other,' said a distraught Anna. 'It's a disaster. We have nothing left. We're just completely devastated.' The couple estimate the total loss at around £60,000, with Peter losing around £55,000 worth of rare, specialist car tuning equipment for his Alpine Performance business. This also included pen drives containing a database of custom engine software files built over eight years. 'Peter's worked years to build this business,' said holistic wellness coach Anna. 'That equipment isn't just expensive - it's his entire livelihood. He's one of the best in the UK at what he does. "He has not stopped crying. I've never seen him like this. It's heartbreaking." Anna's losses, valued at around £5,000, included expensive jewellery, clothing, sentimental photos and items from her late mother. She said: 'That's what hurts most. The sentimental things - they're just gone. They can't be replaced.' To make matters worse, Peter's passport was also stolen, meaning the couple missed their ferry. Peter must now travel a 10-hour round trip to Madrid to get a temporary passport using money borrowed from family. The couple have even had to rely on the Spanish social services for emergency accommodation and food. Anna continued: 'The police haven't helped us. There's such a language barrier. We've had to do our own investigation. One of my cards was used locally, and we even found the shop. They told us that it was a Moroccan man. "We're terrified that the longer this goes on, the less chance we have of seeing our stuff again.' The pair have been left so desperate they've even considered searching dangerous neighbourhoods themselves. She added: 'Locals warned us we could be stabbed or attacked if we went looking in these areas, so we're scared and out of options. "We have done everything we can, but we don't want to put our lives at risk doing our own investigation." In a final effort to rebuild, the couple have launched a GoFundMe to try and recover some of the staggering loss. In a post online, Anna wrote: 'We never thought we'd be in this position Even £5 would mean the world.'
