What Celtics would want in a potential Derrick White deal after two major trades

New York Post19 hours ago

The Celtics have shown they are willing to trade players as they prepare for a season without Jayson Tatum, but for some of their pieces, it will take a lot more than others.
The door to Boston's roster still remains open after sending Jrue Holiday packing to the Trail Blazers in a deal for Anfernee Simons and two second-round picks, and trading Kristaps Porzingis to the Hawks in a three-team deal with the Nets.
There are reports that there are teams interested in both wing Jaylen Brown and guard Derrick White. According to a report from The Stein Line's Jake Fischer, the Celtics informed one team that if a trade for White were to happen, it would come at a hefty price — a similar package to what the Nets received when trading Mikal Bridges to the Knicks.

That 2024 offseason move involved a heavy load of four unprotected first-round picks, a pick swap in 2028, and a first and second-round pick in the 2025 draft.
After watching Desmond Bane go to the Magic for four first-round picks and a future pick swap for the Grizzlies as well, the Celtics understand what could be possible.

However, Celtics assistant general manager Mike Zarren recently shut down the idea of a trade happening for either White or Brown.
'Those two guys are really, really great NBA players, and there hasn't been anything close to serious about trading them,' Zarren said Friday in a post-draft interview. 'I'm not sure where all this reporting came from, but those guys are key parts of our team, and we're lucky to have them here.'
The price tag also will enable only very serious offers to come through, and although Zarren denies it, teams will be calling with haul offers for either player. If worthwhile, it may be hard to turn down.

White, 30, averaged a career-high 16.4 points during the 2024-25 regular season along with 4.8 assists and 4.5 rebounds.
Both White and Brown, who's entering the second year of a supermax contract worth up to $304 million, were instrumental in delivering Boston a championship in 2024 — its first since 2008.
Brown has become a household name, spending all nine years of his career with the Celtics from when he was selected third overall in the 2016 draft. White came to Boston during the 2021-22 season from San Antonio and has earned his way to two All-Defensive second-team nods with the Celtics.

Joe Mazzulla is not on the hot seat with the Boston Celtics

Soon after the Boston Celtics fell to the New York Knicks in the 2025 NBA Eastern Conference Semifinals, there had been some speculation that Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla might be on the hot seat given the unexpected nature of the early postseason exit, even considering the Achilles tendon injury to star forward Jayson Tatum. But speaking to the media after the first round of the 2025 NBA draft on June 25, Boston President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens opened up about how the team sees Mazzulla's future with the team, revealing a key tidbit about the Celtics coach's contract status with the franchise in the process when asked about his future with the team. "I keep any of those discussions in house," said Stevens via CLNS Media. "But we've got Joe under contract for multiple years right now. So, we certainly want Joe to be around here for a long time." The last news we had about the Boston head coach's contract was when ESPN's Tim Bontemps revealed he'd been given a three-year extension in 2023, meaning his current deal was potentially ending soon without the extension of unknown duration he's evidently been granted since. And even in light of some missteps along the way, Mazzulla has led Boston to to a pair of NBA finals appearances -- winning a title in 2024 in one of them -- and two 60-win seasons in a row. Not a bad resume, when you put things into context, frankly.

Fleet roster reset: Where Boston's roster stands after shakeup from free agency and the PWHL Draft

Teams then had an opportunity to rebuild their rosters through free agency and The free agent signing period opened June 16 and is ongoing. Signing will pause Friday at 2 p.m. and resume July 8 at 9 a.m. Advertisement Here's a look at the Fleet's departures and acquisitions during the tumultuous expansion period, plus projected lineups heading into next season: The departures The loss of Knight to Seattle was the shot heard 'round the league, but the Fleet quietly lost a few other stars. Five defenders from the 2024-25 roster — Sydney Bard (Vancouver), Emily Brown (Seattle), Emma Greco (Vancouver), Jess DiGirolamo (Montreal), and Sidney Morin (Minnesota) — are headed elsewhere. The expansion teams poached Bard and Brown during the exclusive signing period, while Greco, DiGirolamo, and Morin were on expiring contracts and signed in free agency. Advertisement Forward Hannah Bilka signed with Seattle after a standout rookie year in which she netted five goals and added six assists in 16 games. She'll be joined in Seattle by forward Lexie Adzija, who spent the past season and a half with Boston as a physical two-way player. It's also worth noting that the Fleet are on the hunt for a new coach. The Fleet will be without Hilary Knight (left) Emily Brown (bottom right), and Jess DiGirolamo (top right) next season. Ken McGagh for The Boston Globe The acquisitions The Fleet recouped their losses by signing six players thus far in free agency: three forwards, two defenders, and a goalie. Boston announced its first two signings, forwards Chloe Aurard and Liz Schepers, on June 18. Aurard, who inked a one-year deal with the Fleet, spent the past two seasons with New York and will reunite in Boston with Müller, her former Northeastern linemate. Aurard had two goals and two assists in 27 games with the last-place Sirens last season. Schepers, who scored the winner for Minnesota in Game 5 of the past two Walter Cup Finals, signed a two-year deal in Boston. Schepers had two goals and four assists in 27 games last season. Rounding out the forward group is Laura Kluge, who signed a one-year deal June 20. Kluge joined Toronto on a training camp invite in 2024 but didn't sign a contract with the Sceptres until February. The Fleet also added defenders Rylind MacKinnon (Toronto) and Zoe Boyd (Ottawa), and goaltender Abbey Levy (New York), all on one-year contracts. At the end of her three-year stint at Boston College, Levy held the program records for save percentage (.940) and saves per game (31.96). The question marks Six players from last season's roster remain unsigned: Emma Söderberg, Klara Peslarova, Loren Gabel, Amanda Pelkey, Jillian Dempsey, and Kelly Babstock. Söderberg and Peslarova, both goaltenders, will not return to the PWHL this season and intend to sign with teams in the Swedish league, a team source told the Globe. Who is the odd man out when it comes to the Boston Celtics clearing more cap space?

The Boston Celtics are not trading Jaylen Brown or Derrick White, so who is the odd man out when it comes to clearing more cap space? The Celtics front office has been cutting salary by trading away Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis from the team's 2024 title core as they seek to get ahead of the second apron restrictions on team building and a potentially historic tax bill. Now under that second apron, we are hearing rumbles that Boston is not yet done making moves, presumably to sign veteran big men Al Horford and Luke Kornet back to the team out of free agency. So which players under team control could soon see themselves calling another city home? Advertisement The folks behind the "WEEI Boston's Sports Original" YouTube channel put together a clip from their "Jones and Keefe" show to talk over which of the players still on the team (or recently added to it) might be on the move for some cap relief.
